Before buying a Pokémon card, verify three things together: the expansion or set, the collector number, and the card’s rarity or printing treatment. Artwork and Pokémon name alone do not identify a specific printing. Read the markings along the lower edge, match them to a set checklist, then compare the listing’s language, photographs, foil treatment, and condition with the card described.
This process can reveal an incorrectly described card and one concrete counterfeit warning: a set symbol or collector number that does not belong to the card. If the markings still look suspicious after comparison, do not rely on price or appearance alone; use a bright-light check and ask a specialist trading-card shop to examine it.

The three identifiers that establish which card you are buying
A Pokémon card’s identity is not just its illustration. Treat these details as a single record:
Recommended Free Tools
- Set or expansion: the set symbol or expansion code printed on the card.
- Collector number: usually shown as a fraction such as
23/189. - Rarity and printing treatment: the rarity symbol, foil pattern, promo mark, or another treatment used by that release.
Two cards can show the same Pokémon and similar artwork yet come from different sets, languages, numbering systems, or printings. Those differences can affect collectability and price. Every Pokémon card has a collector card number, according to TCGplayer, so an absent, unreadable, or inconsistent number deserves investigation rather than an assumption that the card is a variant.

What to read on the card before opening a listing
Turn the card over or enlarge a clear photograph of its lower edge. Record the markings exactly before searching. Do not rely on memory of a symbol’s shape.
Set symbol or expansion code
Look for the small set symbol or expansion identifier near the lower edge. The design and placement can vary between eras, and modern layouts are not a universal template for older cards. Write down the symbol or code as it appears, including any letters that could be confused with a number.
Collector number
Most cards use a format like 23/189. The number before the slash is the card’s position within the checklist; the number after the slash is the advertised size of the main numbered set. Preserve leading zeroes and punctuation when a database displays them. A listing that names the right Pokémon but shows a different number is describing a different card or contains an error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRarity mark and treatment
The rarity symbol is printed near the lower edge. Also note whether the surface is foil, reverse foil, or another treatment visible in the photographs. A rarity symbol by itself may not distinguish every modern variant, so record the treatment with the symbol and number.
How to verify a card step by step
- Capture the card data. From the card or a seller’s high-resolution photograph, write the name, set symbol or expansion code, collector number, rarity symbol, language, and any promo or printing text. If a detail cannot be read, mark it as unknown instead of filling it in from a similar image.
- Search the exact combination. Search the card name together with the complete collector number, then check an official Pokémon expansion checklist or a reputable Pokémon TCG database. Searching only the Pokémon name can return several printings.
- Confirm the set-number pair. The checklist must show that the recorded number belongs to that set and that the set uses the observed symbol or code. A wrong symbol or wrong set number is a specific counterfeit warning identified by TCGplayer, although a seller’s listing error is also possible.
- Read the correct rarity legend. Use the legend for that expansion and era. Do not transfer a modern rarity interpretation to an older release.
- Investigate unusual numbering. If the number before the slash is greater than the advertised denominator, check the complete set list for secret rares or cards outside the main numbered run.
- Compare the physical listing. Match language, photographs, foil treatment, promo or printing markers, and condition to the verified record. Ask for a clear image of the lower edge if the listing omits it.
- Escalate unresolved doubts. For a potentially counterfeit card, compare official product images, inspect it under bright light, and have a specialist trading-card shop evaluate it before completing an expensive purchase.
How Pokémon rarity symbols work
The basic rarity symbols are straightforward, but the legend must match the card’s expansion.

| Symbol or marking | Usual meaning | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Circle | Common | Use the specific set checklist to confirm the release’s legend. |
| Diamond | Uncommon | The symbol identifies the standard rarity category, not a price or condition grade. |
| Star | Rare | A star can also appear in special treatments; verify the set and printing. |
| Star with PROMO text | Promo card | Promo status is a printing marker and should be matched to the relevant promo list. |
| Modern Scarlet & Violet treatments | Double-rare, ultra-rare, illustration-rare and other categories | These expansions add labels and treatments beyond the basic circle, diamond, and star system. Use the exact expansion’s legend. |
A star does not automatically mean that every star-marked card is the same kind of rare. In particular, a promo star and a standard set rare can represent different releases. For modern Scarlet & Violet cards, the expansion checklist is the authority for interpreting double-rare, ultra-rare, illustration-rare, and other treatments. If the photograph shows a foil pattern that the checklist does not associate with the recorded number, stop and resolve the discrepancy.
Understanding the number format, including secret rares
In a number such as 23/189, the numerator is the individual collector number and the denominator is the advertised size of the principal set. It is not a universal count of every card that can be pulled from products associated with that expansion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the numerator is higher than the denominator
A number such as 203/189 can be legitimate. It may identify a secret rare or another card printed outside the main numbered run. Do not “correct” the number to fit the denominator and do not assume the card is fake solely because the numerator is higher. Search the specific set list and confirm that the exact number, artwork, rarity, and treatment appear there.
When the number does not appear in the checklist
First check transcription errors: a blurred photograph can turn one digit into another, and a leading zero may be omitted in a database display. Next confirm that you are using the checklist for the correct language and expansion. If the exact set-number pair still cannot be found, request additional photographs and pause the purchase. A mismatch is materially different from a merely unusual number.
How to compare two similar listings
When two listings show the same Pokémon or artwork, compare the identifiers in a fixed order. Record the result rather than choosing the listing with the more attractive photograph.

| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Set or expansion | Set symbol or expansion code against the official checklist | The same Pokémon can be printed in multiple expansions. |
| Collector number | Complete numerator and denominator | The number identifies the specific entry in that set and can expose a listing error. |
| Language | Language shown on the card and in the listing | Different language printings are different objects, even when the artwork is similar. |
| Rarity and foil treatment | Symbol, foil pattern, and modern rarity label | Cards with similar art can have different treatments and collector classifications. |
| Promo or printing marker | PROMO text or other release marker | A promo printing should not be represented as a regular set card. |
| Condition | Edges, corners, surface, creases, and seller’s stated grade | Condition is separate from set identity and can change value substantially. |
| Seller photographs | Front, back, lower edge, and close-ups that match the actual item | Stock artwork cannot prove that the pictured card is the one being sold. |
If any row conflicts, ask the seller which physical card will ship and request photographs of that card. A correct Pokémon name does not override a wrong set, number, or treatment.
Counterfeit warning signs and what to do
Wrong set symbol or number
A symbol that belongs to another expansion, or a number that the stated set never used, is the clearest data-level warning. It can indicate a counterfeit, a mislabeled listing, or a seller who photographed a different card. Do not resolve the issue by assuming the artwork is close enough.
Images that avoid the identifiers
Listings that show only the front artwork, use a distant group photograph, or crop out the lower edge prevent the essential checks. Request an uncropped image of the front and back, with enough resolution to read the set mark, number, and rarity. If the seller cannot provide one, treat the card as unverified.
Unusually low prices
Pokémon Support warns that dramatically underpriced sealed products can be a warning sign, but it does not publish a universal numeric cutoff. Price alone cannot authenticate a card. A low price may reflect condition, language, a common printing, or a listing mistake; it may also accompany counterfeit merchandise. Use the card’s identifiers and physical inspection instead of an invented percentage or threshold.
Bright-light inspection
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards can often be seen through under bright light and recommends comparing official product images. This is an escalation check, not a replacement for matching the set data. Perform it without damaging the card, and do not treat a card that passes a light check as automatically genuine when its number or symbol is wrong.

Specialist evaluation
For a valuable or doubtful card, take it to a specialist trading-card shop. Pokémon Support specifically recommends specialist evaluation for potentially counterfeit cards, and TCGplayer documents expert authentication checks. Bring the listing, the card, and the set checklist you used so the evaluator can review the disputed identifiers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical buying workflow for online listings
- Filter the search by the exact set. Use the expansion name from the checklist, not just the Pokémon’s name.
- Open the full listing. Locate the collector number and rarity in the seller’s photograph or description.
- Reconcile the data. Confirm that set, number, symbol, language, and treatment describe one checklist entry.
- Check the actual photographs. Compare the seller’s card with official product or checklist images, paying attention to the lower edge and foil pattern.
- Ask targeted questions. Request front and back images, clarification of condition, and confirmation that the pictured card—not a stock image—will ship.
- Pause when evidence conflicts. Do not buy while a set-number mismatch, missing photograph, or unexplained treatment remains unresolved.
- Document the match. Save the listing photograph and checklist entry so you can compare the delivered card with what was offered.
Common problems and their fixes
“I know the Pokémon, but not the set.”
Start with the lower-edge symbol or code, then search the name plus the number. If the number is unreadable, search distinctive text only as a lead and confirm the result by comparing the complete card image and symbol. Never identify a set from artwork alone when multiple printings exist.
“The number is higher than the set size.”
Check the full expansion checklist for secret rares or cards outside the main run. A higher numerator can be legitimate; it must still correspond to the exact set, artwork, rarity, and treatment.
“The listing says rare, but I see a different symbol.”
Use the set’s rarity legend rather than the seller’s wording. Confirm whether the card is a common, uncommon, standard rare, promo, or one of the additional Scarlet & Violet categories. Ask the seller to correct the description or explain the discrepancy before purchase.

Compare the treatment recorded for that collector number. Similar artwork can occur on non-foil, foil, reverse-foil, promo, and other printings. The treatment is part of the object being sold, not a cosmetic detail to ignore.
Best Value
“The card passes a visual check, but the data is wrong.”
Keep the transaction on hold. Bright-light transparency and general appearance are secondary checks; a wrong symbol or number still requires an explanation or specialist assessment.
Optional tools that help without replacing verification
A magnifying glass or loupe can make a tiny symbol easier to read. A phone camera, scanner, or printed checklist can help you enlarge and record the lower edge. These tools improve observation; they do not establish authenticity by themselves. The decisive comparison remains the exact set, collector number, rarity or treatment, and matching photographs.
What this method can and cannot prove
Matching the card to an official checklist can establish that the recorded set, number, and rarity combination is plausible for that expansion. It can identify a listing that describes the wrong printing and can expose a number or symbol that does not belong.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt cannot, by itself, guarantee that a physically printed card is genuine. A counterfeit can copy a legitimate number, and a seller can use an image of a genuine card for a different item. That is why the workflow combines data matching, photographs of the actual card, physical inspection, and specialist evaluation when the stakes justify it.
Set layouts and rarity labels change as new expansions appear. For a modern card, use the current set-specific checklist rather than applying a legend remembered from an earlier era. Keep the card’s language and printing treatment attached to the record, because those details distinguish otherwise similar objects.
