Before paying for a new or used phone, verify five separate things: the exact regional model, the IMEI or serial number, the phone’s carrier lock and network compatibility, the manufacturer’s warranty terms, and the seller’s written return promise. A clean IMEI lookup does not prove that a phone is genuine, unlocked, or warranty-eligible, so use the manufacturer, carrier, and applicable government databases together.
Ask for the identifier before you meet the seller, inspect the identifier on the device and packaging, run the official checks for the country where you will use the phone, and keep a dated receipt. The sequence below is designed to catch misidentified, blocked, locked, imported, repaired, or out-of-warranty devices before your money is at risk.

The five checks to complete before payment
- Identify the exact device: obtain the model number, regional variant, storage configuration, IMEI or serial number, and (for dual-SIM phones) every IMEI.
- Check official status records: compare the identifier with the phone and box, then use the national lost-or-stolen, blacklist, duplication, and certification service available in your country.
- Verify carrier use: ask the intended carrier to check the exact model or IMEI for SIM-unlock status and network eligibility. Lock status and network compatibility are different tests.
- Verify warranty: use the manufacturer’s official warranty or repair portal, confirm the country and seller restrictions, and retain the original proof of purchase.
- Get written recourse: obtain a receipt naming the seller and phone, plus a return policy that covers a blocked, locked, misidentified, or misrepresented device.
1. Identify the exact phone, not just the brand name
Request the model and identifier before you travel or pay
Ask the seller for the precise model number, country or region variant, storage capacity, color, and IMEI or serial number. A listing that says only “unlocked 5G phone” is not specific enough: manufacturers often sell regional variants with different radios, certification, software, or warranty coverage. Ask for the identifier through a private message or invoice; do not publish a complete IMEI in a public advertisement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a phone with two physical SIM slots, an eSIM plus a physical SIM, or another dual-line arrangement, request every IMEI. The two identifiers can have different registry histories. Brazil’s telecom regulator, Anatel, specifically tells buyers to check each IMEI on a multi-SIM device and to compare the number shown on the phone with the number on the box. Its buyer checklist is available at Anatel’s official “Antes de comprar” page (page modified June 16, 2026).

Match the number in the phone, packaging, and paperwork
- Open the phone’s Settings app and find the About or device-information page. Record the model number, serial number, and each IMEI exactly as displayed.
- Compare those values with the retail box label, invoice, and any seller-provided photograph. A mismatch is a stop sign until the seller can document a legitimate replacement or refurbishment.
- Check that the model shown in software corresponds to the hardware, camera layout, storage, and SIM configuration you are actually buying. A genuine phone can still be the wrong regional variant.
An IMEI is an identifier, not a certificate of authenticity. A dishonest seller can copy a clean number onto a different handset, and a database can lag behind a recently reported loss or theft. Treat the number match as the starting point for the other checks, not as a guarantee.
2. Use the official status and certification service for your country
Brazil: IMEI restrictions, certification, and imported phones
Anatel’s checklist asks Brazilian buyers to use a reliable seller, compare the on-screen IMEI with the box, check for restrictions associated with theft, loss, or misplacement, and verify Anatel certification. For a phone bought abroad, it also advises checking Brazilian network compatibility and any contract or carrier restrictions. If you lack internet access, Anatel says consumers can contact an operator or the manufacturer to check an IMEI.
These are Brazil-specific regulatory steps. They do not replace the carrier’s own unlock decision or the manufacturer’s warranty rules, and a result from Brazil’s systems does not establish eligibility in another country.

India’s Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) provides an official IMEI verification service that can return the manufacturer, device type, brand, and model. CEIR warns buyers against devices reported as blacklisted, duplicated, or already in use. Use the result to compare the registered identity with the handset in front of you; a mismatch means you should not complete the purchase without independent documentation.

CEIR is a jurisdiction-specific database. A clean result means only that the identifier was clean in that service at the time of the lookup. It does not prove ownership, SIM-unlock status, future network support, or warranty coverage.
What a government lookup can and cannot establish
| Result | What it tells you | What still requires a separate check |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier matches the device and box | The paperwork is consistent with the handset you inspected. | Whether the phone is stolen, carrier-locked, certified for your market, or covered by warranty. |
| Clean national database result | No restriction was reported in that database at that lookup time. | Other countries’ registries, later reports, SIM unlocking, network bands, and warranty eligibility. |
| Blacklisted, duplicated, or already in use | The identifier has a serious registry problem. | Do not pay; ask the seller to resolve it through the original carrier or return the phone. |
| Certification or model mismatch | The phone may not be approved or may be a different regional variant. | Confirm local radio support, emergency calling, software support, and import requirements with the carrier and regulator. |
3. Check carrier lock and network compatibility separately
Why an unlocked phone can still fail on your network
A SIM-unlocked phone accepts a SIM or eSIM from another carrier. Network compatibility asks whether that exact regional model supports your carrier’s bands, 4G and 5G features, voice-over-LTE requirements, roaming rules, and other technical or account conditions. Passing one test does not pass the other.
Give the intended carrier the exact model number and IMEI and ask it to confirm both points in writing or in a support case. A phone may make a basic call yet lack the carrier’s full 5G service, roaming, emergency-service behavior, or future eligibility. Imported variants deserve extra scrutiny.

If the seller allows it, insert your SIM or activate a temporary eSIM and test registration, calls, text messages, mobile data, and the expected network indicator. This is useful evidence, not a complete approval: a short test may not reveal 5G limitations, account provisioning, roaming restrictions, or a later blacklist report. Keep the carrier’s model-and-IMEI confirmation as the authoritative check.

Preowned iPhone: check Carrier Lock and Activation Lock
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. Apple states that No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked; a carrier name means it can be used only with that carrier. Apple’s complete preowned-device guidance is at If you want to buy a preowned iPhone.
Do not buy an iPhone that displays Activation Lock or asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account during setup. The seller must erase the phone and remove it from that account in your presence. A carrier-unlocked iPhone with Activation Lock enabled is still unusable to you.
Pixel phones: confirm the model’s actual 5G support
Google says phones sold through the Google Store are unlocked, but it also warns that not every Pixel 4a (5G) and later model works on every 5G network. Use Google’s Pixel carrier guidance and ask your carrier about the exact regional model, not merely the product family. A phone needs to be SIM-unlocked to move from the seller’s network to another carrier.
If you plan to use Google Fi, use its model-specific checker in Use a phone designed for Fi or bring your own phone. Google says most unlocked Android and Apple phones can be used subject to the service’s requirements; the checker is the relevant decision for a particular model.

Samsung Galaxy and other carrier-branded phones
For a Galaxy phone, Samsung advises verifying unlock requirements with the carrier before deactivating or switching service. Galaxy settings may show the current carrier and network-provider information. Follow Samsung’s carrier-transfer guidance, then have the carrier confirm the IMEI. A carrier-branded handset can remain restricted even when the hardware is otherwise genuine and compatible.
4. Verify warranty status, geography, and proof-of-purchase rules
Use the manufacturer’s official channel
Run the IMEI or serial number through the maker’s warranty checker or repair flow before payment. Record the result’s date, estimated expiration, covered market, and any message about an unrecognized identifier. Warranty duration, service locations, and seller requirements vary by country and product.
| Manufacturer or platform | Official route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Check warranty eligibility with the IMEI or serial number; use the repair flow when directed. | Google says warranty periods vary by country. It distinguishes authorized third-party sellers, for which Google warranty support is available, from unauthorized sellers, for which it directs the customer to the seller or carrier. Coverage also depends on the issue, condition, purchase channel, and region. |
| Samsung | Use Samsung’s warranty checker and retain the invoice. | Service and warranty terms can be market-specific; confirm that the phone’s sales country is one Samsung will service where you live. |
| Apple | Check coverage using Apple’s device coverage tools and read About the warranty coverage for your Apple device. | Apple says the system’s estimated expiration date can be incorrect. The original sales receipt may be needed to correct the purchase date or establish coverage. |
Confirm who sold the phone and where service is available
Ask whether the handset was sold by the manufacturer, an authorized retailer, a carrier, or an independent seller. A manufacturer lookup can show an estimated date while the warranty claim is denied because the seller is unauthorized, the phone belongs to another market, the device was modified, or the damage is excluded. Google’s Pixel warranty-claim instructions explain that eligibility is assessed against the warranty period, issue, condition, purchase channel, and region.
Cross-border service may be limited even when a phone is genuine. Samsung notes that service for products bought in another country can have specific restrictions. Ask the local service center whether it will accept this model and what proof it requires before treating an overseas warranty as useful.

Keep the original receipt
Save the dated invoice, seller name and address, model, IMEI or serial number, and payment record. Photograph the box label and the warranty result. If the manufacturer’s database shows the wrong purchase date, the original receipt is the document most likely to establish when and where the phone was bought.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Inspect a preowned phone in person
Complete the software checks before examining cosmetics
- Ask the seller to unlock the device so you can open About or device-information settings and compare every identifier.
- On an iPhone, verify Carrier Lock and confirm that Activation Lock is absent after the seller erases the phone.
- Review available repair information. On supported iPhones, open Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. Apple says the display depends on the model, iOS version, and whether a part was replaced.
- Read any component warning carefully. Apple explains that
Unknowncan indicate incomplete installation, a nongenuine or previously used part, or a part that is not functioning as expected. - Test charging, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, biometric unlock, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data, and both SIM lines where applicable. Record defects on the receipt or reject the phone.
Match disclosed repairs to the phone’s history
A replacement screen, battery, or camera is not automatically a reason to reject a phone, but the seller should disclose it and price the risk honestly. Compare the disclosure with the available service history, inspect for broken seals or liquid indicators where visible, and ask who performed the repair. A missing history is uncertainty, not proof that no repair occurred.
6. Protect yourself at the transaction
Get a receipt that identifies the exact handset
The receipt should include the date, seller’s legal or trading name, contact details, price, exact model and regional variant, IMEI or serial number, condition, and any repair or lock disclosure. Have the seller write the remedy if an official check later shows a blacklist, duplicate identifier, carrier lock, Activation Lock, or warranty ineligibility that was not disclosed.
Read the return policy before handing over money
Confirm the length of the return window, whether activation or use voids the return, who pays shipping, and how a refund is issued. For a mail-order purchase, save the listing and checkout terms as well as the receipt. If a seller refuses to provide an identity, identifier, written return terms, or time to perform the checks, choose another seller.
Pay in a way that preserves evidence
Use a payment method that creates a transaction record and avoid handing over cash until the device passes the checks. Keep screenshots of messages, the IMEI result, the warranty result, and the carrier’s confirmation. Never send a full IMEI to a public forum or include it in a photograph that anyone can reuse.
Quick Recap
How to compare phones and sellers
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Reason it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model and region | Does the model number match the hardware, box, regulator record, and your country? | Regional variants can differ in radios, certification, software, and service eligibility. |
| Carrier status | Is the IMEI SIM-unlocked, and has the intended carrier approved the model for the features you need? | Unlocked status alone does not promise 4G, 5G, roaming, or future support. |
| Condition and repairs | What defects, replacements, battery condition, or repair history are documented? | Unknown or undisclosed repairs increase failure and service risk. |
| Warranty and service geography | What country’s terms apply, how much time remains, and which service centers will accept it? | A nominal remaining warranty may be difficult or impossible to claim across borders. |
| Seller and return rights | Can you identify the seller, obtain a dated receipt, and return the phone if a check fails? | Written recourse protects you when databases or warranty records are incomplete. |
| Total cost | Does the price account for an adapter, limited network features, import taxes, repair risk, or unavailable warranty service? | A cheaper phone can cost more once compatibility and support limits are included. |
Red flags and the correct response
- Seller says the IMEI is private and will not show it: do not pay. You need the identifier to perform the official checks.
- IMEI on the phone differs from the box or invoice: pause the transaction until the seller provides credible replacement documentation; otherwise walk away.
- Database says blacklisted, duplicated, or already in use: reject the handset. Do not rely on a promise that a carrier will “fix it later.”
- Phone is locked to another carrier: require the original carrier to unlock it and verify the change yourself before payment.
- Basic SIM test works but 5G does not: ask the intended carrier to confirm the exact model’s bands and provisioning; a short test is not proof of full compatibility.
- iPhone shows Activation Lock: do not buy until the prior owner removes the account and the erased phone reaches the setup screen without requesting that owner.
- Warranty checker shows a date that conflicts with the receipt: keep the original invoice and ask the manufacturer to correct the record before assuming coverage.
- Seller offers only a verbal return promise: insist on written terms naming the remedy, or choose a different seller.
- Imported model lacks local certification: verify regulatory approval, emergency calling, network support, and service options before considering the lower price.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Exact model number, regional variant, storage, and every IMEI or serial number recorded privately.
- Identifier matched in Settings, on the box, and on the invoice.
- Applicable national blacklist, duplicate, lost-or-stolen, and certification checks completed.
- Intended carrier confirmed SIM-unlock status and network compatibility for that exact model.
- iPhone Activation Lock disabled; Carrier Lock says
No SIM restrictionswhen applicable. - Repair history, physical condition, and core functions inspected.
- Manufacturer warranty result saved, with country, seller eligibility, service geography, and proof-of-purchase requirements understood.
- Dated receipt, seller identity, payment record, and written return policy secured before final payment.
