Do not fund a Ledger device until it passes three independent checks: confirm the seller and package show no warning signs, install Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official website or the official iOS or Android app stores, and complete the app’s Genuine Check during setup. A legitimate device generates its own recovery phrase and never arrives with a PIN or phrase already supplied. If the package is compromised or Genuine Check fails, stop and contact Ledger Support.
Genuine Check is valuable but not magical. It verifies cryptographic attestation from the device’s Secure Element; it does not prove every step of the shipping and resale history or detect every physical modification. Use the checks together rather than treating a convincing box, seal, or marketplace listing as proof.

Start with the seller and the unopened state
Verification begins before you connect the device. Ledger recommends buying directly from Ledger or from an Authorized Reseller. That recommendation reduces exposure to altered or counterfeit stock, but a seller name by itself cannot authenticate the particular unit in your hands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the actual seller, not only the product page
Marketplaces can show several sellers on one listing. On Amazon, inspect the specific Sold by line for the offer you are about to purchase, then compare that seller with Ledger’s official storefront or current authorized-reseller information. A product page that looks official can still contain offers from independent merchants.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Keep records of the order, seller name, invoice, and delivery condition. Those details help Ledger Support investigate a problem, but they do not replace the device check. A legitimate seller can accidentally ship a returned or tampered unit, and a dishonest seller can use authentic photographs and descriptions.
Inspect the package before connecting anything
Look for evidence that the carton, inner packaging, or device has been opened, replaced, resealed, or altered. Do not rely on a hologram, a seal, the printed weight, or familiar branding. Counterfeit packaging can imitate those details, and an anti-tampering seal can be copied or removed and replaced without obvious damage.
Do not proceed if the package appears compromised. Photograph the condition, keep all packaging, and contact Ledger Support or the seller through an independently verified support channel. Do not plug in a suspicious unit merely to see what happens.

Confirm that the device is in an uninitialized state
A Ledger device should not arrive with a PIN, recovery phrase, or wallet already configured. Ledger’s official buying guidance states: “A legitimate Ledger device never comes with a recovery phrase or PIN code pre-configured. Ever.” That statement appears in Ledger Academy’s Best Practices To Securely Buy Your Ledger Signer, updated September 18, 2026.
If a card, sticker, email, letter, or seller message supplies a PIN or a list of recovery words, treat it as a stop signal. Do not try the supplied credentials, import the words, or continue setup. The safe setup path is for the device to generate a new Secret Recovery Phrase after you initialize it yourself.
Use only authentic Ledger Wallet software
Install Ledger Wallet for desktop from Ledger’s official website. On a phone or tablet, use only the official iOS or Android app store listing. Do not follow a download link in a seller’s message, an unsolicited support email, a QR code on a package, or a pop-up that claims your device needs an emergency update.
Counterfeit software is a serious risk because it can display reassuring text while attempting to steal your recovery phrase. Before installation, check that the app came from Ledger’s official distribution channel and that the publisher information matches Ledger. Keep your operating system and security software updated, and avoid performing the initial setup on a shared or malware-infected computer.

Genuine Check is performed inside Ledger Wallet and depends on communication with Ledger’s verification service. If the app cannot reach the service, postpone the check rather than accepting an offline substitute or a seller’s screenshot.

Set up the device yourself and complete Genuine Check
Follow the normal first-use flow in Ledger Wallet. The exact wording can change as the application is updated, but the security decisions do not.
- Connect only after the seller and package checks pass. Use the cable and device you received, and start the setup from the Ledger Wallet installation you obtained through an official channel.
- Choose the option to initialize a new device. Do not select an import, restore, or recovery path based on words supplied in the box. A new device must create its own credentials.
- Allow Ledger Wallet to run Genuine Check. The application challenges the device and verifies its cryptographic response. Let the process finish; do not close the app or substitute a web page that claims to perform the same test.
- Read the result before creating accounts or moving funds. A completed Genuine Check is a prerequisite for trusting the unit. If the application reports a failure or cannot complete the check, stop and follow the failure procedure below.
- Set a PIN that you chose on the device. Never use a PIN printed on a card, sent by a seller, or suggested by a support message. Keep the PIN private and do not photograph it.
- Record the new Secret Recovery Phrase by hand. Write the words in the order shown on the device, verify them when the device asks, and store the record offline in a place protected from theft, fire, and unauthorized access.
Only after the check succeeds and you have completed a self-generated setup should you create accounts, receive a small test amount, or move an existing balance.
What Genuine Check actually verifies
Genuine Check is a cryptographic attestation process, not a visual inspection. Ledger Donjon describes the flow this way: a secure server sends a challenge to the device; the device’s Secure Element signs that challenge with a factory-provisioned key; and Ledger verifies the signature and attestation before enabling relevant Ledger Wallet manager functions.
Ledger’s developer documentation describes the related device key pair and Issuer Certificate used when a Ledger device connects to Ledger Wallet. A clone running rogue firmware should not possess the device key and Ledger-signed certificate needed to produce a valid response. That makes a successful check strong evidence that the Secure Element and its attestation credentials are recognized by Ledger’s service.
The check is therefore more meaningful than a serial number, a photograph, or a seller’s assurance. It tests a cryptographic relationship between the device, its secure hardware, and Ledger’s verification infrastructure.
What Genuine Check cannot prove
A pass does not establish the device’s complete physical or logistical history. Ledger Donjon’s threat model specifically notes that Genuine Check cannot detect every unauthorized physical change, including a spying implant that leaves the original Secure Element intact. The cryptographic response can remain valid even when another component has been altered.
It also cannot tell you every event that occurred between factory shipment, resale, storage, and delivery. That is why the seller, package condition, and initial-state checks remain necessary after you understand the attestation result.

Handle the Secret Recovery Phrase as a theft boundary
The Secret Recovery Phrase is generated during your device setup. It is the backup that can control the assets associated with the wallet, so possession of the words is equivalent to possession of the ability to recover those assets.
Write it down from the device and keep it offline. No legitimate verification step requires you to type it into Ledger Wallet, another application, a computer, a phone, or a website. A prompt for the phrase is a scam indicator, even when the page uses Ledger branding or claims that an account is locked.

Do not copy the old phrase into the new setup.
Red flags and the correct response
| What you see | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PIN supplied or already configured | A genuine device is initialized by its owner, not by the seller. | Do not try the PIN or continue. Preserve the packaging and contact Ledger Support. |
| Recovery phrase supplied, printed, or requested | The phrase should be generated on the device during your setup; an outside phrase may be known to someone else. | Do not enter or use it. Treat the unit and any related account as unsafe. |
| Package appears opened, altered, or replaced | Physical presentation cannot establish authenticity, and tampering may have occurred before delivery. | Do not connect the device. Photograph the condition and seek support or a verified return. |
| Genuine Check fails or will not complete | The device did not provide the attestation Ledger Wallet requires. | Stop using it and contact Ledger Support. Do not bypass the check with another app. |
| Unsolicited replacement device or urgent letter | Unsolicited-device scams may try to make you enter a phrase or migrate funds. | Do not plug it in or follow the message. Verify any notice through Ledger’s official support channels. |
| Request to “synchronize,” “validate,” or “unlock” by entering words online | These are common disguises for phrase theft, not hardware verification. | Close the page or app and provide no phrase, PIN, or approval. |
If Genuine Check fails
Failure during a first setup
Disconnect the device only after the application has recorded the failure, if it gives you that option. Do not create accounts, accept a recovery phrase, or deposit funds. Record the exact error text, Ledger Wallet version, operating system, connection type, and date; those details help support diagnose a genuine service or device problem.
Repeated failure after basic connection checks
Use the official Ledger Wallet installation, a known-good cable, and a direct connection rather than an untrusted hub. Restart the application and retry once. If the result still fails, stop testing and contact Ledger Support. Repeated retries do not make an unverified device safe, and a seller’s claim that the warning is normal is not a security resolution.
When the app cannot reach Ledger’s service
Check your internet connection and whether Ledger Wallet itself is current, then try again later through the official application. Do not accept a “manual approval,” install a remote-support tool at a stranger’s request, or enter your recovery phrase to unlock the check. An unavailable verification service means verification is pending, not that the device has passed.
When the package was compromised but the check passes
Do not assume the successful cryptographic result erases the physical warning. Genuine Check does not reconstruct the supply chain or rule out every implant. Contact Ledger Support and follow its advice about return, replacement, or investigation before funding the device.

Buying through marketplaces and resellers
Buying directly from Ledger gives you the clearest purchasing trail. An Authorized Reseller can also be appropriate, provided the authorization is current and you verify the actual merchant rather than relying on a marketplace badge.
For marketplace purchases, inspect the offer-level seller, not only the listing title. Save the order confirmation and photograph the box immediately on delivery. If the listing combines offers from multiple merchants, repeat the seller check each time you reorder; the displayed offer may change.
Price alone is not an authentication test. An unusually low price can indicate a return, counterfeit, or scam, but a normal price does not prove that the particular device is safe. The combination of a traceable seller, uncompromised packaging, official Ledger Wallet software, successful Genuine Check, and self-generated credentials is the meaningful process.
A compact first-use checklist
- Seller checked against Ledger’s official storefront or authorized-reseller information.
- Order record and delivery condition preserved.
- Package shows no opening, replacement, or alteration.
- No PIN, recovery phrase, or preconfigured wallet was supplied.
- Ledger Wallet downloaded from Ledger’s official website or an official mobile app store.
- Device initialized by you, not by a seller or message.
- Genuine Check completed successfully inside Ledger Wallet.
- PIN selected privately on the device.
- Secret Recovery Phrase generated on the device, written offline, and kept secret.
- No funds moved until every preceding item was satisfied.
Why this sequence matters
Each gate answers a different question. Seller and package checks address how the unit reached you and whether it shows obvious tampering. Official software reduces the chance that a counterfeit app will misrepresent the result or steal credentials. Genuine Check tests the device’s cryptographic identity. Self-generated PIN and recovery-phrase handling ensure that no previous holder already knows the credentials that control your wallet.
None of the gates is redundant. A convincing package can contain a modified device; a genuine device can be paired with a malicious app; and a successful attestation cannot reveal every physical change or every person who handled the unit. Treat the process as layered verification, not a single authenticity badge.
Reported scam context
Ledger’s buying guidance describes an unsolicited-device incident in May 2021 involving an approximately $78,000 loss. That is a reported individual case, not a statistic about the typical likelihood or size of counterfeit-related losses. Its practical lesson is narrower and more useful: unsolicited hardware and messages that ask for a recovery phrase should be treated as hostile until independently verified.
Final decision
Use a Ledger device only when you bought it through a traceable channel, found no physical or credential red flags, installed Ledger Wallet from an official source, and completed Genuine Check successfully. Keep the recovery phrase entirely offline and private. If any gate fails, do not fund the device; preserve the evidence and contact Ledger Support.
