1. Confirm the exact domain independently
Read the full web address carefully, including spelling, extra words, hyphens, and unusual characters. Scammers can copy a brand’s name and visual identity while using a different domain.

Check the address against a source you already trust, such as a previously verified brand account or an established brand document. If you are unsure whether a message or sales page is genuine, open a fresh browser and navigate to the brand independently. Do not rely on a phone number or link that appears only on the questionable page or message. The FTC recommends contacting a company using a website or phone number known to be real when checking a potentially suspicious message.
2. Do not rely on ads or search ranking
A sponsored search result or social media ad is not proof that a seller is authorized by the brand. An impersonating site may offer counterfeit goods, ship a different item, or take payment without delivering anything. Navigate to the brand through a trusted route and compare the resulting address with the one in the ad. The FTC’s online shopping guidance warns shoppers to research sellers and products.
3. Check the seller’s identity and reputation
Search for the exact seller name and website address alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” and “scam.” Read several independent sources rather than relying on testimonials or star ratings displayed on the seller’s own website. Reviews can be fake or manipulated, so treat them as signals—not proof that a store is genuine.

Compare the seller name and contact details across the site and outside sources. Inconsistencies are a reason to pause and verify further; a consistent presentation alone still does not establish that the site is operated by the jewellery brand.
4. Examine the offer and purchase terms
A price far below the usual cost of an expensive, brand-name piece is a warning sign: the item could be counterfeit or stolen. Price alone does not prove fraud, so weigh it alongside the seller’s identity, reputation, and terms.

Before ordering, find and read the delivery estimate, return and refund rules, return-shipping responsibility, and any fees. If the terms are missing, vague, or difficult to locate, do not assume you will be able to return the item or recover its cost.
5. Understand what HTTPS does—and does not—tell you
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a website. It does not certify that the seller is legitimate, that the domain belongs to the jewellery brand, or that the item is authentic. Scam sites can use HTTPS too. The FTC explains this distinction in its online shopping advice.

6. Choose a payment method with a dispute path
Prefer a credit card when available. Be wary of a seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency; these methods can make it difficult to recover your money if the transaction goes wrong. The FTC’s shopping guidance recommends paying by credit card when possible.
7. Save evidence of the transaction
Keep the seller’s name and address, the item description, order date and amount, promised shipping timing, return policy, receipt, emails, and payment records. If there is a problem, contact the seller and then your payment provider. In the United States, you can also report suspected fraud to the FTC. FTC reporting guidance and consumer protections apply to the United States; elsewhere, use the relevant local consumer-protection and payment-dispute channels.

Website legitimacy is not the same as jewellery authenticity
A genuine brand website can still require you to assess what a particular item is made of, while an imitation site may make convincing material claims. Check descriptions of precious-metal quality and purity, and whether gemstones, diamonds, or pearls are natural, manufactured, or treated. The FTC’s shopping guidance discusses jewellery terminology and gemstone disclosures. Those details help you evaluate the item; they do not verify who operates the website.

If you are deciding between two sites, assess both against the same criteria. This is a practical checklist, not an official scoring system:

- Is the exact domain confirmed through a trusted brand contact route?
- Are the seller’s name and contact details consistent?
- Are there useful reputation signals from multiple independent sources?
- Is the price plausible for the item?
- Are shipping, returns, refunds, and fees clearly explained?
- Can you pay using a method with a dispute route?
