To verify a business’s GSTIN, use the official GST Portal’s public Search Taxpayer tool. Search by GSTIN/UIN, then compare the returned business name, address and registration status with the invoice or vendor details you received. The lookup can confirm what the portal reports about a registration; it does not establish that the business or transaction is legitimate in every other respect.

In the pre-login search, enter the displayed CAPTCHA and select Search. The GST Portal manual describes this basic lookup as available without signing in.
-
Review the profile returned by the portal. If no record appears, check that you entered the GSTIN/UIN correctly and ask the business to confirm the identifier before relying on it.
Compare the result with the business details you were given
A search result is most useful when you compare it against the invoice, vendor onboarding record or other business information in hand. Check the legal name or trade name and the principal place of business, and review the registration status and any cancellation information displayed.

Address: Is the principal place of business consistent with the details the business provided? A difference may need clarification rather than an immediate conclusion about fraud.
-
Status: Check the status shown by the portal. The result may include an auto-suspended status and its effective date, as well as a cancellation date where applicable.
-
Filing information: Decide whether the available return-filing details address the particular diligence question you have.
If the name, address or status does not line up, pause the transaction or vendor setup and ask the business to explain or correct the GSTIN details. GSTN describes the lookup as useful for checking GSTIN authenticity, handwritten invoices and possible vendor reporting errors; a mismatch is a reason to verify the information, not by itself a complete finding about the business.

The public profile can include the GSTIN/UIN, legal name, trade name, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, cancellation date when applicable, and return-filing details. Filing information is available through the filing table by selecting a financial year; the portal also describes a view of return-filing frequency.
Best Value
Treat these as details reported by the portal, not as a complete audit of the supplier. A registration lookup does not independently verify the goods or services, the person communicating with you, the bank account, or the overall legitimacy of a transaction.
The portal manual describes additional information for logged-in users, including proprietor, director or promoter names, e-way bill history, annual aggregate turnover and tax-payment information. These are not fields to promise from the anonymous public lookup.

The GST Portal also documents a Search by PAN function under Search Taxpayer. It can show registrations available on the searched PAN. GSTN discusses this functionality in guidance for a person who believes registrations may have been created by misuse of their PAN, including a process for reporting suspected misuse. This is a separate use from checking a supplier’s GSTIN; use it only where you have a proper reason to search that PAN.
Download your own GST registration certificate
If you need a certificate for your own business, sign in to the GST Portal and open Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates. The portal manual says issued certificates are listed in descending chronological order and can be downloaded as PDFs. If registration details have been amended, an updated or amended certificate is displayed as well. This signed-in certificate service is distinct from the public lookup used to check another business’s GSTIN.
Use a secondary lookup only as an alternative
IRIS IRP documentation also describes a GSTIN-details lookup that returns fields such as trade name, legal name, address and PIN code. It says changes are reflected after they appear on the GST Portal. For an authoritative verification workflow, start with the GST Portal itself; a secondary service should not replace checking the official record.
