How to Verify a Delivery Message and Avoid Parcel-Tracking Scams

Assume an unexpected delivery text or email is unverified. Do not tap its link, scan its QR code, reply, call the number it gives you, or enter information on the page it opens. Check the order in the retailer account where you bought it, or independently open the carrier’s official website and enter a tracking number you already possess. Then report and block the message.

A genuine carrier name, logo, tracking number, or polished design does not prove authenticity. Criminals impersonate postal and courier services with look-alike pages that can capture card details, passwords and personal information, and a link can also lead to malware.

How do I know if a delivery text is real?

Separate warning signs from proof. A suspicious message may show several warning signs, but scammers change wording, layouts, sender IDs and domains. Conversely, a message without spelling mistakes can still be fraudulent. The reliable test is whether you can confirm the delivery through a channel you opened yourself.

Start with the message’s context

  • Were you actually expecting a parcel, and does the timing match an order you made?
  • Can you find the same shipment by signing in to the retailer’s app or website through your normal bookmark, saved password manager entry or manually typed address?
  • Do the shipment details in that account match the sender, destination and tracking number in the message?

Context can help you decide which order to inspect, but it is not authentication. An attacker can send a convincing message when you are genuinely waiting for a package, and a real tracking number can be copied into a fake notification.

Look for pressure and unusual requests

Signal Why it deserves caution Safe response
Urgency or a threat of immediate return Pressure is intended to stop you from checking independently. Ignore the deadline and verify through your order account or the carrier’s independently opened site.
An unexpected redelivery, address or “holding” fee Small charges are a common way to obtain card details. Do not pay from the message. Check the carrier’s published policy and the shipment through a trusted route.
An unfamiliar, shortened or misspelled web address Look-alike domains can imitate a carrier’s branding while sending data elsewhere. Do not open it. Type the official address yourself instead.
A request for a password, bank details, full card number or other personal data Delivery updates normally do not need your account credentials in a message form. Stop and use the retailer or carrier account reached independently.
A request to install an app, open an attachment or scan a QR code The download or destination may expose your device or account. Cancel the action and obtain any app or tracking information from the official store or site.
A familiar carrier name or logo Brand impersonation is easy to reproduce and does not establish who sent the message. Verify the shipment outside the message.

Do not use the message as your directory

Every contact detail inside an unsolicited message is untrusted: the link, phone number, reply address and QR code. Copying one of those details into a browser or phone app still follows the attacker’s route. Use a retailer account you already know, a carrier address you type yourself, or a telephone number from a statement, official paperwork or a trusted address book.

Is this parcel-tracking link a scam?

It may be. The common pattern is a claim that delivery failed, an address is incomplete, a parcel is waiting, or a modest fee is needed to release or reschedule it. The link opens a page styled like a postal service, courier or retailer. That page may ask for a card number, banking information, a login, an address, an identity detail or a one-time code. It may also redirect to malware. The carrier name in the text and the visual quality of the page do not change that risk.

Spelling errors are not a dependable filter. Official guidance notes that scam examples and designs change, and some messages are carefully written. Treat an unexpected request as unverified even when the grammar, logo and layout look professional.

What is the safest way to check a delivery message?

  1. Pause before interacting. Do not tap a link, scan a QR code, reply, open an attachment, call a number in the message or install an app it recommends. If you opened the notification preview, stop there; do not continue to the linked page.
  2. Open the retailer independently. Use the retailer’s app, a bookmark you created earlier, or an address you type yourself. Sign in and inspect the order, shipping status, destination and tracking number. If the order page has no matching shipment, treat the message as fraudulent.
  3. Use the carrier independently when necessary. Type the carrier’s known official address yourself or use a phone number from a trusted source. Enter a tracking number copied from your order confirmation or retailer account, not a tracking link supplied by the suspicious message.
  4. Stop at any request for sensitive data. A payment request, password prompt, bank-detail form or demand for extra personal information is a reason to leave the page and verify through another channel. Some legitimate shipments can involve customs, so do not assume every fee is fake; confirm the specific shipment and charge on the carrier’s independently accessed official channel.
  5. Report and block it. Use the phone or messaging app’s spam-reporting and blocking controls, then submit it to the relevant carrier and consumer-protection service. Reporting helps providers identify campaigns and prevents further contact from the same sender.

Keep the original message only long enough to capture information needed for a report, such as the sender, date and destination. Do not forward it to friends or coworkers as a warning if doing so would preserve a live link; share a description or a screenshot with the link obscured.

Does USPS send tracking links by text?

USPS rules are specific to the United States Postal Service. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service says USPS will not send tracking texts or emails unless a customer first requested tracking for a specific package, and those messages will not contain a link. USPS tracking tools are free. If a text claims to be USPS and you did not initiate tracking for that tracking number, do not use it. Even if you are expecting mail, open USPS.com yourself and check there.

The Postal Inspection Service calls unsolicited texts impersonating USPS package tracking “smishing.” It advises people not to click the message link and says to notify a financial institution if they interacted with the URL. USPS’s scam FAQ also says it does not charge a fee for redelivery. That is a USPS policy, not a universal rule for every carrier or every customs situation.

“USPS will not send customers text messages or e-mails without a customer first requesting the service with a tracking number, and it will NOT contain a link.”

What does Royal Mail say about tracking messages?

Royal Mail’s guidance applies in the United Kingdom and has a different qualification. It says it contacts customers by text or email only when tracking updates were requested by the sender at posting. Royal Mail says it will not ask for bank details, passwords or personal data, and does not request payment for an underpaid item by email or text; for an underpaid item, it says it leaves a grey “Fee to Pay” card.

Royal Mail separately notes that it may send an SMS or email about customs-fee charges when the sender provided the recipient’s contact details, as well as leaving a card. Therefore, a customs reference is not automatically proof of fraud, but you must still verify it through Royal Mail’s official site or another independently obtained contact route. Never pay from the message’s link.

Royal Mail warning signs and reporting

Royal Mail flags shortened or unfamiliar links, unexpected payment requests, requests to reschedule through a link and pressure to act quickly. For a suspicious email, do not click links or attachments; forward it to [email protected]. For a suspicious text, take a screenshot and send it to that address. The message may also be forwarded to 7726, the spam-reporting short code used by many mobile networks.

What about FedEx, UPS, DHL and other carriers?

Do not apply USPS or Royal Mail notification rules to another carrier. Messaging policies vary by service, country, shipment type and the notification choices made by the sender or recipient. The cross-carrier rule is procedural: use the retailer account or contact the carrier through a website or phone number you already know is genuine. Find the shipment with a tracking number obtained from the order confirmation, not with a destination supplied by the suspicious message.

A carrier may legitimately contact you about a delivery, a customs process or a delivery preference, but the message itself is not the place to establish legitimacy. If a carrier’s own policy says a particular notice is possible, confirm the shipment details and any charge after independently opening its official channel.

What should I do if I clicked a delivery text?

Clicking does not prove that your device was infected, but it increases the need for a careful response. The sources describe malware as a possible result, not an inevitable one. Stop interacting with the page and do not enter additional information.

If you only opened the link

  • Close the tab or app and do not download anything it offers.
  • Do not call numbers, install profiles or applications, or grant permissions requested by the page.
  • Check your device for an unexpected download or newly installed application and remove anything you did not intentionally install using the device’s normal controls.
  • Report the message, including the destination address if your reporting channel accepts it.

If the page displayed a warning or attempted a download, treat that as a reason to update your device through its normal settings and consult the device maker’s security guidance. Do not install a “cleaner” offered by the suspicious page.

If you entered a password

Go to the genuine service through its independently opened website or app and change the password immediately. If that password was reused elsewhere, change it on those services too. Review recent sign-ins, account-recovery details and transactions, and follow the affected provider’s instructions for securing the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you entered card or bank information

Contact the financial institution promptly using the number on your card, statement or official app. Explain that the details were submitted to a suspected delivery scam and ask what blocking, replacement or transaction-monitoring steps it recommends. The Postal Inspection Service specifically recommends notifying a financial institution after interacting with the URL in a suspected USPS smishing message, even if you did not submit a form.

If you supplied other personal information

Contact the organization connected with that information, such as the carrier, retailer or bank, through an independently verified channel. Ask what account or identity-protection steps apply to the information exposed. Keep notes of when you clicked, what you entered and whom you contacted; those details help the provider investigate without requiring you to revisit the scam page.

How to report a parcel-tracking scam

United States

  • Forward a suspicious text to 7726 where your mobile provider supports that route.
  • Report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • For USPS impersonation, open USPS.com yourself and use the Postal Inspection Service reporting resources reached from the official site.
  • Use your phone’s or messaging app’s report-spam and block functions.

United Kingdom

  • For Royal Mail scam email or text, send the evidence to [email protected] as Royal Mail instructs.
  • Forward the suspicious text to 7726 where available.
  • Use your messaging app or mobile provider’s spam-reporting and blocking controls.

Other countries and carriers have their own reporting addresses and regulators. Reach the carrier’s official site by typing its address yourself, then follow its fraud-reporting instructions. Do not use a reporting link or telephone number contained in the suspicious message.

How to prevent future delivery-message scams

  • Keep order records in the retailer account. The order page and confirmation email provide a trusted source for the tracking number.
  • Use bookmarks you created yourself. Save the official carrier and retailer sites after visiting them through a known source, rather than saving a link from a text.
  • Turn on account alerts inside official apps. In-app notifications still require you to open the app through your normal route, not through an unsolicited message.
  • Keep your phone and browser updated. Updates reduce exposure to known security problems, although they cannot make a fraudulent message genuine.
  • Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication. If a fake page captures one password, uniqueness limits the damage to other accounts; multi-factor authentication adds a separate barrier, though you should never disclose a one-time code to a delivery page reached from a message.
  • Teach household members the same rule. Children, older relatives and coworkers should know that a carrier name is not proof and that verification starts outside the message.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Was the delivery message unexpected or asking you to act urgently?
  2. Did it include a link, QR code, attachment, phone number or payment request?
  3. Can you find the matching order by opening the retailer account independently?
  4. Can you verify the tracking number on the carrier’s official site without using the message’s link?
  5. Did the message request a password, card, bank or personal information?
  6. Have you reported and blocked it after preserving only the evidence needed for a report?

If any answer raises doubt, leave the message untouched and perform the check from the retailer or carrier account. The safest sequence is simple: stop, independently check, then report.
