Verify a crypto opportunity independently before sending money: identify the real operator, confirm its authorization and permitted services, read the token’s legal and technical documents, test every return claim, and understand custody and withdrawal risks. No investment has guaranteed returns. If a seller uses urgency, promises “zero risk,” or demands more money to release a withdrawal, stop.
1. Freeze the sales process before you investigate
Do not deposit while a salesperson is pushing a deadline, claiming that an allocation is almost gone, promising a fixed or unusually high return, or asking for another payment to unlock your account. Those tactics prevent independent checking and are common in investment fraud.

Save evidence before blocking contact. Keep screenshots of the offer and account dashboard, the exact domain and app name, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, emails, chat logs, phone numbers, documents and payment instructions. Do not click a replacement link sent by the same contact. A new domain or “compliance agent” can be part of the same scheme.

Red flags that should end the conversation
- “Guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or “no-loss” returns.
- Pressure to act immediately or keep an opportunity secret.
- Requests for cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers or remote access to your device.
- A demand for taxes, verification fees, liquidity charges or another deposit before a withdrawal is released.
- Unexpected investment messages through social media or dating platforms.
- Testimonials, celebrity endorsements or a rapidly rising balance offered as the main proof.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says investment scams commonly promise large or fast returns and that there are no guaranteed returns. Its 2024 report recorded $4.6 billion in reported losses to investment scams in 2023; that figure covers investment scams generally, not crypto alone.

2. Establish the operator’s legal identity
A brand name, trading symbol and polished website are not a legal identity. Write down the exact company name, any parent or subsidiary, incorporation jurisdiction, registration number, physical address, directors, app publisher and every domain used to solicit or hold funds.
Match every name across the transaction
- Compare the legal entity in the terms of service with the name on the regulator’s register.
- Check whether the website, mobile app, bank account, payment processor and receiving wallet are controlled by that same entity.
- Look for spelling changes, extra words, cloned logos and domains that differ by one character from an established site.
- Check when the domain and social accounts were created. A recently created identity making claims about years of operation needs a specific explanation.
Use an independent contact route
Do not verify a firm by calling the number in a sales message or clicking its “regulator” link. Find the firm through a regulator’s listing, a corporate registry or another independently sourced record, then use the contact details shown there. Ask the firm to confirm the legal entity, the services it is authorized to provide and the destination for client funds. If the independent contact cannot confirm the offer, stop.
Search the company or person and the token name with terms such as review, scam, fraud and complaint. The FTC specifically recommends this search and warns that testimonials and the opportunity’s own website are not independent evidence.
3. Check registration and the exact scope of authorization
For a U.S. seller, adviser or broker, use the public registers below. Search the legal entity and the individual representative, not just the marketing brand.
| Register | What to check | What a match does—and does not—prove |
|---|---|---|
| Investor.gov | Whether the firm or professional appears in the SEC’s investor-facing registration and disclosure information. | Confirms that a record exists; it does not guarantee performance, solvency or protection from loss. |
| SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) | Adviser name, registration status, jurisdictions, disclosures and disciplinary history. | Shows the regulatory record and permitted adviser activity; it does not authorize every crypto service a website might advertise. |
| FINRA BrokerCheck | Broker or brokerage-firm registration, employment history, qualifications and reported events. | Helps verify a broker relationship; it is not proof that a token, lending product or offshore platform is approved. |
Confirm that the record belongs to the entity receiving your money and that the listed permission covers the actual service—such as advice, brokerage, custody, lending or a securities offering. A registration can be genuine while a scammer impersonates the registered firm or sells a product outside its scope.

If you are outside the United States
Use the financial regulator’s register in the jurisdiction where the seller is established and, where relevant, the register in your own country. Rules, compensation schemes and permitted crypto activities differ by country. A U.S. registration does not automatically authorize activity elsewhere, and an offshore registration may provide little practical recovery route for you.
4. Inspect custody, withdrawals and operating controls
A displayed balance is not evidence that assets exist. The FTC has warned that fake investment websites can invent account growth and then disappear when a customer requests a withdrawal.

- Who controls the private keys: you, the platform, a qualified custodian or several parties?
- Are customer assets held separately from company funds, and what records or attestations support that claim?
- How are deposits, trades, staking, lending and withdrawals executed?
- What are the minimums, fees, waiting periods, network choices and identity checks for a withdrawal?
- Can the firm pause withdrawals, rehypothecate assets, lend them out or use them as collateral?
- What insurance is actually provided, by whom, for which events and with what exclusions?
- What happens to keys, records and customer claims if the firm becomes insolvent, is hacked or loses access to a wallet?
- How are conflicts handled when the platform operates a market, lends to related parties or creates the token it sells?
Read the withdrawal mechanics, not just the fee page
Terms should state who may delay or reject a withdrawal, which events trigger a freeze and how disputes are handled. A platform that shows profit but will not explain the path from your account to an external wallet is not transparent. Never send extra money to “unlock” a withdrawal; that request is a classic advance-fee pattern.
Security features such as two-factor authentication reduce account-takeover risk but do not prove that the business is solvent. Conversely, self-custody means you control keys but also bear the risk of loss, phishing and irreversible transfers. A mistaken blockchain address, lost key or compromised device can make recovery impossible.
5. Research the token and its issuer
Read the white paper, roadmap, purchase terms, privacy policy and risk disclosures before relying on a token’s marketing page. The documents should be available without making a deposit and should identify the people and entity responsible.

Rights and use
- What does the token let you do: access a service, vote, receive a distribution, redeem an item or claim nothing beyond transferability?
- Are there contractual rights to revenue, repayment, redemption or a refund?
- Who can change the protocol, freeze balances, mint tokens or alter fees?
- What happens if development stops, the network forks or the issuer shuts down?
Supply and allocation
- Total and circulating supply, minting authority and any burn mechanism.
- Allocation to founders, investors, treasury, market makers and the public.
- Vesting and unlock dates that could create sudden selling pressure.
- Voting rules, quorum and the concentration of control in a few wallets.
People, code and funding
Check whether named executives have verifiable backgrounds and whether the issuer’s address, jurisdiction and funding use are consistent across documents. If the project cites source code or an audit, inspect the actual repository or report, its date, its scope and whether the deployed contract matches the reviewed code. An audit is not a promise of profitability or a guarantee that later code is safe.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission advises buyers to understand the rights attached to a coin or token and the underlying factors that could affect its value. If the documents avoid those basics, you cannot calculate what you are buying.
6. Do not let a token label settle its legal status
Calling an asset a “utility,” “governance” or “community” token does not determine whether securities laws apply. SEC guidance explains that a crypto asset that is not itself a security can still be offered and sold as part of an investment contract.
The commonly used investment-contract analysis asks whether there is an investment of money, a common enterprise, an expectation of profits and profits derived from the managerial efforts of others. The facts of the offer matter: promotional statements, promised development, control retained by the issuer and how purchasers are expected to profit can all be relevant.
Ask the issuer whether the offering is registered, relies on a specific exemption or has not been assessed. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal or regulatory advice before a real transaction, especially when the offer includes profit sharing, lending, staking rewards, pooled funds or resale restrictions. Do not infer legality from a foreign incorporation, a disclaimer or a token’s exchange listing.

7. Rebuild every return claim from its assumptions
Translate an advertised annual percentage, daily payout or “AI trading” result into the cash flows required to produce it. Then ask who supplies that cash and what must go right for the payment to continue.
Questions for a yield or profit calculation
- Is the return paid by actual revenue, trading gains, borrower interest, token emissions or new deposits?
- Are leverage, derivatives, rehypothecation or concentrated positions involved?
- Can the rate change, and can you exit before a lockup ends?
- What happens during a bank run, market crash, stablecoin failure or network outage?
- Are withdrawals limited to a window, subject to a queue or priced using an internal value?
- Does the model depend on recruiting investors or paying commissions for referrals?
Recalculate using adverse assumptions rather than the best case. A high nominal rate can be overwhelmed by token inflation, fees, slippage, taxes, a falling exchange rate or an inability to withdraw. Compare the claim with audited financial information, regulatory filings, independently verifiable on-chain activity where appropriate and reporting from sources that are not paid by the issuer.
A celebrity, influencer, newsletter or testimonial can show that someone promoted an offer; it cannot establish ownership of reserves, profitable trading or legal authorization. The FTC warns that unexpected social-media investment messages are almost always scams and that fake sites can display invented account growth.
8. Make a risk-limited decision
Proceed only when you can explain, in your own words, who holds the asset, what rights you receive, how a withdrawal works, which regulator oversees the service and exactly how the return is generated. If any answer depends on “trust us,” stop and keep your money out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a written go/no-go checklist
- Legal entity, jurisdiction and contact route independently confirmed.
- Registration and disciplinary history checked in the appropriate register.
- Authorization matches the actual product and the entity receiving funds.
- Custody, segregation, private-key control, fees and withdrawal rules understood.
- Token rights, supply, unlocks, governance and issuer funding disclosed.
- Security status and any registration or exemption explained for the relevant jurisdiction.
- Return assumptions survive a severe downside scenario without relying on recruitment.
- You can afford to lose the entire amount and have a record of the decision.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority describes crypto as high risk and speculative and says investors should be prepared to lose all the money invested. Diversification can limit concentration, but it cannot turn a fraudulent or insolvent platform into a safe one.

How to compare two legitimate-looking opportunities
When two options survive the initial checks, compare them on the same evidence rather than choosing the higher advertised yield.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Legal entity and jurisdiction | Exact name, incorporation record, governing law and service address. | Determines who you can pursue and which rules apply. |
| Registration and scope | Register entry, permitted activity and disciplinary disclosures. | Separates a real authorization from a logo or borrowed registration number. |
| Custody and segregation | Key control, custodian, asset segregation and insolvency treatment. | Shows whether customer assets may be exposed to company creditors or operational misuse. |
| Withdrawals and fees | Limits, queues, lockups, network support and all charges. | A quoted balance has little value if access is conditional or uneconomic. |
| Token rights and supply | Contractual rights, minting authority, allocation and unlock schedule. | Explains what ownership means and how dilution or concentration can affect value. |
| Transparency | Named team, code, audits, financial disclosures and conflict policy. | Lets you test claims instead of relying on branding. |
| Complaints and recovery | Formal complaint route, regulator and jurisdiction for disputes. | Defines practical options when something goes wrong. |
| Downside resilience | Stress scenarios for volatility, insolvency, cyberattack and network failure. | Reveals risks hidden by a calm-market return calculation. |
A lower fee or higher advertised yield does not compensate for weak authorization, opaque custody or an unworkable withdrawal process.
If you suspect fraud or have already paid
Stop sending money and preserve the evidence listed above. Do not pay a recovery company that promises to retrieve crypto for an upfront fee; it may be a second scam. Contact the bank, card issuer or exchange involved as soon as possible and ask what payment reversal or account-freeze options exist. Blockchain transfers are often irreversible, so speed and accurate transaction details matter.

What the official warnings establish
- The FTC’s 2024 investment-scam guidance states: “There are no guaranteed returns.”
- The FTC’s cryptocurrency guidance tells consumers to search the company or person and cryptocurrency name with “review,” “scam” or “complaint” before investing.
- The CFTC says buyers should understand the rights attached to a coin or token and the factors that could affect its value.
- The FCA’s investing-in-crypto guidance, updated in 2026, says investors should be prepared to lose all the money invested.
These agencies provide warnings and verification procedures, not a single reliable current global total for crypto-specific losses. Treat the absence of an official loss number as a reason to verify carefully, not as evidence that losses are small.
