Before depositing money, identify the exchange’s legal entity and search that entity in AUSTRAC’s public Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) Register. Match the result’s legal name and ABN or ACN to the exchange website and confirm the registration is current. If the platform offers financial products, dealing or advice, check ASIC’s Professional Registers for the relevant Australian financial services (AFS) licence or authorised representative. Then check ASIC and Moneysmart scam warnings for the same brand, entity and domain.
These checks establish regulatory status, not safety or profitability. AUSTRAC registration concerns anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing (AML/CTF) supervision; it does not promise solvency, secure custody, fair pricing or recovery of your funds.

What “registered” means in Australia
Australia uses more than one regulatory pathway for crypto businesses. A platform providing covered virtual-asset services must register with AUSTRAC before offering those services in Australia. AUSTRAC’s public register is intended to let the public verify that a provider is registered and operating under AUSTRAC oversight, as AUSTRAC stated when announcing the register on 30 June 2026.

ASIC regulation can apply at the same time. A crypto-asset may be a financial product, or the platform may provide financial advice or deal in financial products. In those circumstances, the business generally needs an AFS licence or must operate as an authorised representative of a licensee for the activities it performs. An AFS licence is also not ASIC endorsement of the company, product or advice.
Step 1: Record the exchange’s exact identity
Do this before opening an account. Use the exchange’s terms and conditions, privacy policy, footer, account-opening screens and contact page, rather than relying on a logo or app name.
Write down these details
- Full legal entity name, including “Pty Ltd” or other suffixes.
- Australian Business Number (ABN) and Australian Company Number (ACN), if shown.
- Trading name and every brand name used in Australia.
- Website domain, including the exact spelling and top-level domain.
- Registered or principal business address and customer-support contact details.
- Any claimed AUSTRAC registration number, AFS licence number or authorised-representative number.
Record the domain separately from the brand. A fraudulent website can copy a legitimate name, logo, licence number or registration number while using a different domain. The legal entity, identifiers and web address must line up across the exchange’s own documents and the official registers.

Brands are marketing labels, not necessarily the entities that hold registrations. Several unrelated businesses can use similar names, and an overseas parent may not be the Australian operator. Start with the legal entity shown in the contract you would accept when opening the account. If the site lists more than one entity, determine which one provides the Australian service and check each relevant entity.

Step 2: Search AUSTRAC’s VASP Register
AUSTRAC’s VASP Register is the primary registration check for covered crypto-exchange services in Australia. Use the live public register, not a screenshot, cached search result or number copied from an advertisement.
- Open the public VASP Register. Search the exact legal entity name first. Try the ABN or ACN if the register supports identifier searches, and then try the trading name as a cross-check.
- Inspect the complete result. Compare the registered name and identifiers with the terms, footer and account-opening pages you collected. Check the status and any dates, conditions or restrictions displayed by the register.
- Verify the website relationship. A matching name alone is insufficient. The exchange domain, Australian address and customer-support details should be consistent with the entity in the register. If the register identifies a different domain or no website relationship, pause and obtain an explanation from the business through independently verified contact details.
- Confirm the registration covers the service offered. Registration is relevant only if the entity is the provider of the service you intend to use. A registered group company does not automatically prove that an unlisted affiliate or separate domain is covered.
- Save the result responsibly. Note the date and the exact entity searched. Status can change, so a saved page is evidence of what you saw, not a permanent guarantee.
Services that require AUSTRAC registration
AUSTRAC’s designated virtual-asset services include exchanging virtual assets for money, exchanging one virtual asset for another, arranging those exchanges, providing custody, accepting or making transfers available, and certain services connected with an offer or sale of virtual assets. The legal classification depends on what the business actually does, not what it calls the feature.
| Service you see on a platform | Why it matters to the AUSTRAC check |
|---|---|
| Buying or selling crypto for Australian dollars or another currency | This is an exchange of a virtual asset for money and is within the designated-service framework. |
| Swapping one crypto-asset for another | Virtual-asset-to-virtual-asset exchange is separately identified as a covered activity. |
| Matching, arranging or brokering a customer’s exchange | An intermediary can be providing a designated service even when it does not hold the asset itself. |
| Holding keys or assets for customers | Custody is a covered service; check that the registered entity is the custodian you would contract with. |
| Receiving or making transfers available | Transfer functionality can bring the operator within the registration regime. |
| Services linked to an offer or sale | Some offer-related activities are covered and require examining the exact business model. |
If no result appears
Do not assume a spelling problem or proceed because the platform claims that registration is “pending.” Recheck the legal name, punctuation, ABN or ACN and trading name. If the entity still cannot be found, ask the business to identify the Australian provider in writing and verify that entity independently. A platform offering a covered service without a current AUSTRAC entry should not receive your deposit while you investigate.

An overseas registration, a company-number search in another country or membership of an industry association does not replace Australian registration for a covered service offered to Australians.

Step 3: Decide whether an ASIC check is required
AUSTRAC registration is not the only question when a platform offers more than straightforward exchange or custody. ASIC’s Professional Registers can show an AFS licence and authorised representatives. Use the register to check the licensee’s legal name, licence status, authorised representative relationship and the activities the authorisation permits.
Situations that call for an ASIC search
- The platform describes a token, managed arrangement, derivative, fund, investment contract or other product as a financial product.
- It gives personalised recommendations about buying, selling or holding a crypto-asset.
- It executes, arranges or deals in a financial product rather than merely providing a non-advised exchange service.
- It operates through an authorised representative instead of holding its own AFS licence.
- Search ASIC’s Professional Registers using the licensee or representative’s exact legal name and any stated licence number.
- Open the record and read the permitted activities, not just the fact that a licence exists.
- Check whether the exchange’s Australian entity and website are the entity or business name associated with the authorisation.
- Compare the service being advertised with the licence scope. A licence for one activity does not authorise every product, recommendation or dealing service.
- If the platform says it is an authorised representative, verify both the representative record and the sponsoring licensee.
| What the exchange does | Register to examine | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Spot exchange and custody only | AUSTRAC VASP Register | Is the Australian provider registered for the covered services? |
| Personalised investment recommendations | AUSTRAC plus ASIC Professional Registers | Is advice provided under an appropriate AFS authorisation? |
| Products presented as financial products | AUSTRAC plus ASIC Professional Registers | Does the licence cover the specific product and activity? |
| Execution or dealing in a financial product | AUSTRAC plus ASIC Professional Registers | Is the entity or representative authorised to deal as described? |
Do not treat a licence number printed on a website as proof. Enter it into ASIC’s register and compare the legal entity, status, website and permitted activities.
Step 4: Check scam warnings and identity consistency
Search the ASIC/Moneysmart Investor Alert List for the brand, legal entity and domain. Also review current ASIC scam alerts for warnings that may use a different spelling or a look-alike website. A clean search is not proof of legitimacy: warning lists are not exhaustive and a newly created scam may not yet be listed.
Compare all identity signals
- The legal name in the exchange contract matches the AUSTRAC result.
- The ABN or ACN is identical wherever it appears.
- The domain you plan to use is the one associated with the verified entity, not a near-spelling or different extension.
- The address, email domain and support channels are consistent across the website and register information.
- Any ASIC licence or authorised-representative relationship belongs to the same Australian service provider.
Pressure to deposit quickly, requests to pay a “release” or “tax” fee, instructions to send funds to a personal wallet, or a support agent who asks for your password are reasons to stop. Registration checks cannot make those demands safe.

How to compare two exchanges after verifying registration
Use the same legal-identity test for both platforms. Registration status alone is not a comparison of fees, liquidity, custody security, withdrawal reliability or financial performance.
| Comparison axis | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Australian provider | Legal name, ABN/ACN and trading name | Prefer an exact match across the contract, website and AUSTRAC record. |
| Domain | Full website address used for login and deposits | A different or unexplained domain is a material identity mismatch. |
| AUSTRAC status | Current status, dates and displayed conditions | Check the live record immediately before funding. |
| ASIC authorisation | Licence or authorised representative and permitted activities | Compare the scope with the products, advice and dealing actually offered. |
| Warnings | Investor Alert List and ASIC scam-alert results | A warning is a serious stop signal; no warning is not clearance. |
| Contact identity | Address, phone, email and support domain | Inconsistencies require independent verification before use. |
What registration does not guarantee
AUSTRAC registration does not establish that an exchange is solvent, that customer assets are segregated, that its systems are secure, that withdrawals will be processed, or that prices and fees are fair. It also does not predict investment returns or recover money lost in a hack, fraud or market decline.
An AFS licence does not mean ASIC endorses the company, financial product or advice. Licensing indicates an authorisation framework and obligations; it is not insurance against loss.

The scale of fraud explains why an independent check matters. The National Anti-Scam Centre reported more than $837 million lost to investment scams in 2025. ASIC reported removing more than 19,400 online scams in 2025/26, 182% more than in the previous year. Neither figure measures how often a register search prevents a loss, and neither makes a particular exchange safe.

Recheck immediately before opening or funding an account
AUSTRAC can impose conditions, suspend or cancel a registration, or refuse renewal. Registrations renew every three years. ASIC licence status and authorised-representative relationships can also change. Perform a fresh check on the day you create an account and again immediately before a substantial deposit.
- Open the live AUSTRAC VASP Register and search the exact Australian legal entity.
- Confirm the status, dates and any conditions still match your notes.
- Check that the login and deposit domain is unchanged and spelled correctly.
- Search ASIC’s Professional Registers if the service involves financial products, advice or dealing.
- Search the Investor Alert List and current ASIC scam alerts for the entity and domain.
- Save the date of each check and the contact details you used.
- Start with the smallest practical transaction and test a withdrawal before committing more funds.
What to do when details do not match
The brand matches but the legal entity does not
Stop and identify the contracting entity. Ask why the Australian service is supplied by a different company, then verify that company in the registers. Do not accept a screenshot or an unexplained licence number.
The legal entity matches but the domain differs
Do not log in through the unfamiliar domain. Type the verified address yourself or use contact information confirmed independently. A cloned site can use a genuine company name and number.
The AUSTRAC entry exists but the service is broader than the record suggests
Ask which registered entity performs each function, especially custody, transfers and arranging trades. If the platform also provides advice or financial products, complete the ASIC check. A group registration does not automatically extend to every affiliate or feature.
The register shows a changed, suspended or cancelled status
Do not deposit or transfer additional funds. Contact the provider through verified channels, preserve account and transaction records, and seek professional or regulatory guidance about any funds already held.
The platform appears on an alert list
Treat the warning as a stop signal. Do not send identification documents, crypto or money in response to a promise that a fee will remove the warning or release funds.
A concise decision rule
Proceed only when the Australian contracting entity is found in the current AUSTRAC register, its legal name and ABN or ACN match the exchange documents, the domain and contact details are consistent, any required ASIC authorisation covers the actual service, and no unresolved warning or identity mismatch remains. If any of those conditions fails, keep funds out until the discrepancy is independently resolved. Even when every check passes, evaluate custody, security, withdrawal terms and market risk separately; registration is a regulatory status, not a safety guarantee.
