Verify the seller, the product, and your recourse separately before you pay. Capture the seller’s legal identity and payment details, obtain brand-authorization and origin records, match the exact model to your country’s safety and communications requirements, and confirm a usable warranty, return address, and platform dispute route. A marketplace badge, favorable reviews, or a low price cannot establish authenticity or local support on its own.
The practical test is whether an independent party could identify who sold the item, where it came from, which model it is, whether it is authorized and compliant for your destination, and how you would obtain a refund or remedy if those answers prove false.

What you are actually trying to verify
“Is this Chinese marketplace seller legitimate?” contains several different questions. Treating them as one question is how buyers end up with a genuine product that cannot legally be imported, a real brand item with no local warranty, or a counterfeit backed by convincing reviews.

- Authorization: Is the seller permitted by the brand owner to sell this brand, in this territory and for this product category?
- Authenticity and origin: Can the seller show a lawful supply path, manufacturer identity, batch or serial records, and commercial documents?
- Destination support: Is the exact model and revision safe, legal, correctly labelled, and serviceable where you will use it?
- Recourse: Can you prove what was offered and obtain a return, refund, repair, or compensation if the goods do not match?
These checks overlap, but none substitutes for another. A seller can be a registered business yet sell unauthorized stock. An authentic item can be a domestic-market revision with the wrong voltage, radio approvals, software region, labels, spare parts, or warranty coverage for your country.

Build an evidence file before contacting the seller
Start while the listing is still visible. Marketplace pages, prices, shipping promises, and seller names can change after an order, so preserve the offer that induced you to buy.
- Save the complete listing URL, screenshots of the title, photos, model number, revision, specifications, price, shipping promise, warranty wording, and return terms.
- Record the store name, platform account ID, store opening date or age indicator, stated business address, phone number, email, and any license information.
- Note the legal entity named on the listing, invoice, payment page, and proposed return address. Differences are a reason to pause.
- Keep every message, attachment, quotation, authorization letter, test report, invoice, and payment receipt in the original format.
Use a folder named for the order and add dates to filenames. This makes it possible to show a platform, payment provider, brand owner, customs authority, or regulator exactly what was represented before payment.
Step 1: identify the accountable seller
Collect the identity details
Ask for the seller’s full legal name, business-license information, registered address, operating address if different, telephone number, email, invoice entity, payment recipient, and return address. Ask which entity will issue your purchase record and which entity is responsible for after-sales service.
Chinese online-trade rules require operators to disclose license information and truthful details about the seller, product, price, delivery, returns, safety, and after-sales service. That requirement is useful only if you compare the disclosures with the transaction you are actually making.
Look for internal consistency
Compare the name and address in five places: the store profile, business-license image, invoice, payment beneficiary, and return instructions. A different company name may be legitimate when a distributor or fulfillment company is involved, but the seller should explain the relationship and identify who owes you the remedy.

- A personal account accepting payment for a supposedly authorized company product needs a clear explanation.
- A return address that is a warehouse, residential address, or unrelated company is not automatically fraudulent, but it changes the practical value of the return promise.
- A newly opened store is not proof of misconduct; it simply gives you less operating history, so require stronger documentary evidence.
- Refusal to provide a legal name, invoice entity, or usable contact details is a stop signal, not a minor inconvenience.
Step 2: verify authorization for branded goods
Request a specific authorization document
For a branded product, request a certificate or letter from the brand owner that names:
- the exact seller or legal entity;
- the territory in which the seller may sell;
- the product category, model family, or SKU covered;
- the start and expiry dates; and
- the issuer’s name, role, contact details, signature or verification method, and document number where applicable.
A generic “authorized distributor” badge, a purchase invoice, or a photograph of a factory is not the same evidence. Authorization is about the relationship between this seller and the brand owner, not merely whether the item resembles a genuine product.

Verify it independently
Contact the brand through an official support or compliance channel that you found independently, or check the brand’s published authorized-distributor list. Ask whether the named entity, territory, and product category are covered and whether the document is current. Do not rely on a phone number or email address printed only on the seller’s certificate.
AliExpress policy permits branded products when the brand owner has issued an authorization certificate and prohibits counterfeit and unauthorized listings. That policy gives the platform a basis to remove a listing; it does not verify every document for you before purchase.
Step 3: establish origin and traceability
Documents worth requesting
Ask for commercial invoices or purchase records showing the upstream seller and product description, the manufacturer or authorized distributor’s identity, batch or lot numbers, serial-number ranges where used, applicable test reports, and a traceable logistics path. For a regulated product, request the declaration, registration, or conformity documentation required for your destination.

Alibaba seller terms require sellers to keep documents that can prove lawful origin and to accept random quality or authenticity inspections. That is a contractual obligation on sellers, not a guarantee that a buyer will receive authentic goods without checking.
“The Seller has the obligation to keep any document that might prove the legitimate origin of its Products.”
“The Seller undertakes to accept any random inspections of the Products that AliExpress may conduct to verify their quality and authenticity.”
Assess the evidence, not just the file format
PDFs, stamps, serial-number lists, and QR codes can be copied. Check that the legal names, addresses, model numbers, dates, quantities, and serial or lot ranges agree across documents. Ask the issuer or manufacturer to confirm a document using an independently obtained contact channel. A document that cannot be verified, has mismatched names, or covers a different model is not useful evidence.

Step 4: check whether the exact product works and is supported in your country
Match the exact model and revision
Copy the complete model number, suffix, hardware revision, plug type, and software or firmware region from the listing. Compare them with the manufacturer’s documentation for your destination. “Same product” claims often conceal regional variants.

Chinese product-quality law bars falsified origin or certification marks and counterfeit or substandard goods. Cross-border guidance also warns that imported products may lack local-language labels or differ from domestic standards. Those rules do not convert a domestic-market unit into a destination-compliant product; you must confirm the model and responsible party yourself.
Give higher-risk products a higher evidence threshold
For electrical, medical, child-safety, protective, automotive, food-contact, or other regulated products, do not let a low price outweigh missing compliance records. Require an actionable warranty and recall route, not merely a seller promise. If the seller cannot identify the responsible importer or service organization in your country, treat the item as unsupported even if it appears genuine.
Step 5: preserve payment and dispute recourse
Keep the transaction on-platform
Pay through the marketplace’s protected checkout whenever possible. A request to move payment to a personal bank account, cryptocurrency wallet, direct message, or unrelated website removes records and may eliminate platform protection. If a seller offers a discount for leaving the platform, calculate the value of the lost dispute route before accepting.
Confirm the remedy in writing
Before paying, ask:
- What event triggers a refund: counterfeit finding, wrong model, missing certification, non-delivery, or failure to match the listing?
- How many days do you have to open a dispute, and when does that period start?
- Which return address is used, who pays international return shipping, and is a prepaid label available?
- Does the seller issue a commercial invoice or other purchase record?
- Who pays duties, taxes, inspection charges, and shipping if the product is rejected at the border?
Save the answers in the platform message system rather than relying on a telephone promise. Cross-border guidance assigns disclosure, return, recall, and compensation duties to responsible enterprises, but enforcement across borders can still be slow and expensive. A clear, documented process is more valuable than a broad statement that “warranty is included.”

Film the unopened package, shipping label, seals, serial number, accessories, labels, and first power-on. Compare the delivered unit with the saved listing and documents before removing protective film or installing software. If the item is dangerous, materially different, or suspected counterfeit, stop using it and preserve it in its received condition.

- The seller will not provide a legal identity, invoice entity, or physical return address.
- The authorization document names another company, territory, product, or expired period, and the seller cannot explain the difference.
- Certificates, invoices, serial lists, or company names cannot be independently verified or contradict one another.
- The price is materially below normal supply cost with no credible explanation such as a documented clearance or discontinued model.
- The listing hides, misspells, or substitutes a brand name, uses photographs of packaging without model evidence, or makes vague “original quality” claims.
- The seller pressures you to pay off-platform, asks you to understate the customs value, or discourages an invoice.
- The warranty is described only as “seller warranty” with no service location, time limit, shipping responsibility, or parts plan.
- The model’s voltage, radio bands, safety marks, language labels, or software region cannot be confirmed for your country.
Alibaba’s intellectual-property policy prohibits deliberately misleading brand-imitation listings and allows measures including delisting, suspension, or account closure. Platform enforcement is useful after a problem is reported; it is not a substitute for your pre-payment checks.
Compare listings with a risk-weighted scorecard
When several sellers offer the same apparent product, compare the dimensions below rather than sorting by price alone. For safety-critical or regulated goods, compliance and an actionable recall or warranty path should outweigh the lowest total.

Send the same questions to competing sellers. Compare the completeness and verifiability of the answers, not the seller’s confidence or response speed.
What platform rules and Chinese law can—and cannot—do
Chinese online-trade rules require truthful seller, product, price, delivery, return, safety, and after-sales information and require purchase documents to be provided on request. Regulator guidance calls for supplier management, quality checks, traceability, anti-counterfeit controls, and recalls. Product-quality law prohibits falsified origin or certification marks and counterfeit or substandard goods.
These frameworks create obligations and enforcement tools. They do not inspect every international transaction in advance, guarantee that a listing is authentic, or ensure that a foreign buyer can enforce a claim cheaply. Marketplace policies similarly provide reporting, inspection, delisting, suspension, and dispute mechanisms, but the buyer still needs a documented case and must meet the platform’s deadlines.
If the item arrives counterfeit, unsafe, or unsupported
- Stop using it. Disconnect unsafe electrical or radio equipment and do not distribute a suspected counterfeit.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the packaging, labels, serial number, listing capture, messages, documents, payment record, unboxing video, and photographs of the discrepancy.
- Open the platform dispute immediately. State the precise mismatch—counterfeit, wrong model, missing certification, undisclosed regional restriction, or warranty refusal—and attach dated evidence.
- Notify the brand or rights holder. Ask whether the serial or authorization is valid and request written confirmation where possible.
- Contact the payment provider and relevant authorities. Follow their time limits for a chargeback, fraud report, customs notification, product-safety report, or recall complaint.
- Do not return evidence blindly. Follow the platform’s instructions, use tracked shipping, declare the contents accurately, and retain proof of delivery and all costs.
For a suspected counterfeit, a brand’s written verification is often more persuasive than an argument about appearance. For a genuine but unsupported product, document the exact regional mismatch and the warranty or compliance consequence; authenticity alone does not create a destination-country warranty.

- Seller legal identity, license information, invoice entity, payment recipient, and return address match or are explained.
- Brand authorization names this seller, product category, territory, and valid dates, and the brand can confirm it.
- Origin records, invoices, manufacturer or distributor details, and serial or lot information are coherent and verifiable.
- The exact model and revision meet destination voltage, radio, safety, labeling, software, and import requirements.
- A named warranty provider, repair route, parts plan, and recall contact exist for your country.
- Payment remains on-platform and the dispute deadline, refund triggers, return address, and shipping responsibility are clear.
- Your evidence file contains the listing, correspondence, documents, and payment record before you place the order.
If any essential box remains unresolved, the rational choice is to postpone the purchase or choose a seller that can document the complete chain from identity to after-sales remedy. The lowest listing price is not a saving when authenticity, compliance, and recourse are unknown.
