How to Validate AI-Generated Decompilation and Fix Reverse-Engineering Errors

AI-generated decompiled code is a candidate explanation, not recovered source. Validate it in layers: use the original instructions and Ghidra p-code as the reference, prove control-flow and data-flow details, compile with warnings enabled, then differentially execute the candidate against the binary and fuzz the cases that still disagree. When a mismatch appears, minimize the input, find the first divergent checkpoint, repair one hypothesis, and rerun the complete regression set.

This approach distinguishes verified behavior from inferred intent. Readable names, plausible comments, and successful compilation are useful for investigation, but runtime agreement with the original is stronger evidence.

Why AI decompilation is an inference problem

A binary contains machine instructions, data, and environment-dependent effects—not the original variable names, comments, type declarations, or design intent. An AI system can turn that evidence into readable C-like code, but it must infer structure that may have been removed or transformed by optimization. The same instruction sequence can be described by several source-level programs, while a familiar-looking source pattern can be wrong for a particular calling convention, width, aliasing relationship, or exceptional path.

Optimization can fold branches, reorder operations, eliminate variables, inline functions, turn loops into arithmetic, or merge code paths. Obfuscation, indirect dispatch, self-modifying behavior, and missing external state add further uncertainty. Therefore, “it looks right” is not a validation criterion. The useful question is whether the candidate preserves the observable behavior of the target binary for the paths and environments you have actually exercised.

The National Security Agency describes Ghidra as a reverse-engineering framework with disassembly, decompilation, graphing, scripting, and interactive or automated analysis. Its decompiler translates instructions into p-code, which records control-flow behavior and detailed state semantics, and then analyzes control flow from a function entry point. When an AI explanation conflicts with the binary, the instruction stream and p-code are the reference layer.

Establish an evidence hierarchy before changing code

Keep evidence in descending order of authority. This prevents a persuasive AI narrative from overriding a directly observed machine-level fact.

Evidence What it can establish What it cannot establish alone
Original instructions and p-code Actual operations, widths, flags, register/state transitions, and reachable control-flow edges represented by the analyzed function The original source author’s names, intent, or comments
Runtime traces and observed outputs Behavior for the inputs, environment, and paths that were executed Behavior on unvisited paths or under a different environment
Compiled candidate That the generated source is syntactically and semantically acceptable to the selected compiler and settings Equivalence to the binary
AI names, comments, and algorithm descriptions Hypotheses that may guide inspection Any fact not supported by instruction, data-flow, or runtime evidence
BSim similarity Similarity of normalized feature vectors for related functions Proof that two implementations are behaviorally identical

BSim’s official tutorial states that its purpose is to generate a feature vector for each function in a binary. Those features represent data flow and control flow and are normalized so functionally equivalent code can produce similar vectors. Use that signal to corroborate copied or related routines, not to replace differential execution.

Freeze the evidence and make the experiment reproducible

Before asking an AI system to revise a function, create a record that lets another analyst reproduce the exact claim. Store the binary hash; architecture; compiler and ABI clues; load address; function address; reverse-engineering tool version; decompiler settings; and the exact prompt and model output. Keep the original disassembly and p-code export beside the generated source, rather than allowing a later re-analysis to silently replace them.

  • Record whether the file is stripped, packed, position-independent, or protected by anti-analysis techniques.
  • Note imported libraries, operating-system assumptions, locale, floating-point mode, and any hardware features that can alter observations.
  • Assign stable names to the original function, candidate implementation, test harness, and each minimized failing input.
  • Preserve every mismatch, including ones that appear to be caused by the harness. A discarded failure cannot become a regression test.

This freeze is important because changing a function boundary, data type, or decompiler option can change every subsequent inference. A reproducible record also makes confidence claims auditable.

Validate structure before semantics

Start with the shape of the function. If the boundary or calling convention is wrong, later type and algorithm reasoning can be internally consistent yet unrelated to the real routine.

Confirm the function boundary

Inspect the entry point, predecessor edges, successor edges, returns, tail calls, and any code that falls into or out of the apparent range. A truncated function can make an AI “repair” missing behavior by inventing statements. An overextended boundary can absorb a neighboring routine and produce impossible local variables.

Reconcile every basic-block edge

Compare the control-flow graph with the disassembly and p-code. Account for conditional branches, unconditional jumps, fall-through, early returns, exception edges when represented, and compiler-generated epilogues. For each AI if, loop, or switch, identify the instruction that creates the corresponding edge. If there is no such edge, treat the source construct as an unsupported interpretation.

Check calls, returns, and stack behavior

At every call site, record where arguments arrive, which registers or stack locations are preserved, how the stack is cleaned up, and where the return value appears. Compare those observations with the candidate signature. Tail calls and register-passed arguments are frequent sources of apparently missing code; an indirect call may also represent several targets rather than one direct function.

Verify switch and jump-table recovery

For a computed branch, verify table bounds, index scaling, default behavior, every computed target, and whether a target falls through into another case. A candidate that lists the visible case labels but omits an out-of-range path is structurally incomplete.

Validate types and data flow from uses, not names

Once the graph matches, inspect the values flowing through it. AI-generated names such as length, flags, or object are labels, not evidence.

Signedness and integer width

Trace the instruction that sets flags and the exact width of each load, operation, comparison, and store. Distinguish sign extension from zero extension. Test negative values, high-bit values, truncation, and extension cases. A byte loaded as unsigned and a byte loaded as signed can agree on ordinary ASCII inputs while diverging at values above 127.

Pointers, offsets, and alignment

For every dereference, record the base expression, offset, access width, alignment assumptions, and whether the same storage is accessed through another type. Confirm structure-field offsets across all uses before assigning a field name. A four-byte read at offset 8 is not proof of a field called size; it may be a packed flag word, a pointer fragment, or an element of an array.

Aliasing and lifetime

Follow writes and reads through calls. Determine whether two pointers can refer to the same storage, whether a callee mutates an argument, and whether a value remains valid after a callback or allocator operation. Do not add ownership or “free” operations because they are conventional in a reconstructed source; require evidence from the binary’s calls and control flow.

Enums, bit fields, and arithmetic

Check which bits are masked, shifted, compared, or preserved. A value that looks like an enum may be a bit field whose combinations are meaningful. Preserve the machine’s operation order when overflow or flag state matters. Replacing a wrapping operation with a wider mathematical expression can change behavior at integer limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compile the candidate, but do not confuse compilation with equivalence

Parse and compile the generated source using documented, reproducible settings. Treat warnings as review items rather than harmless noise. Compilation catches missing symbols, incompatible types, unreachable constructs, and control-flow mistakes that a text-only review can miss. It does not prove that the candidate performs the same operations, uses the same widths, or reaches the same side effects as the binary.

  • Keep compiler version, target architecture, optimization level, include paths, and linker inputs fixed for a comparison run.
  • Record every warning and the disposition: corrected, justified with evidence, or left unresolved.
  • Separate compatibility shims used only by the harness from logic claimed to represent the binary.
  • Make the build reproducible so a later repair can be compared against the same artifact.

If a candidate only compiles after suppressing a warning about a conversion, missing prototype, or incompatible pointer, inspect that warning as a possible semantic defect rather than hiding it.

Differentially execute the original and candidate

Build a harness that delivers the same inputs to the original binary and the candidate implementation. Compare more than the return value: inspect output buffers, lengths, error codes, files, network-visible effects, and relevant state. Normalize only effects that are genuinely nondeterministic and document each normalization rule.

Define the observable contract

For each function, specify input bytes and lengths, initial memory, global state, callbacks, and environment. Define what counts as an output: scalar return, modified memory ranges, allocated objects, error state, emitted records, or externally visible calls. If an effect cannot be observed safely, mark it as unverified rather than silently ignoring it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with known-good and boundary cases

Use ordinary valid inputs to establish a baseline, then add empty and maximal lengths, null pointers where the original permits them, malformed encodings, duplicate fields, integer overflow edges, and failure paths. Include cases that exercise each branch identified in the control-flow graph. A passing happy path says little about cleanup, rejection, or overflow behavior.

Compare intermediate checkpoints

When final outputs differ, capture values after meaningful stages: length calculation, bounds check, decoded field, table lookup, state update, and call return. Comparing checkpoints narrows a large output mismatch to the first operation whose value diverges. The first divergent value is usually more actionable than the final symptom.

Control environmental variation

Keep input order, random seeds, time sources, locale, file contents, thread scheduling assumptions, and external responses controlled where possible. If the original depends on an address, process identifier, or hardware instruction, record that dependency and compare an equivalent observable rather than claiming bit-for-bit identity.

Use coverage-guided fuzzing to find and preserve mismatches

Coverage-guided fuzzing is most useful after the basic harness works. Seed it with valid examples and boundary cases, then retain every input that produces a grounded divergence. CHISEL describes a workflow that combines compiler feedback with a coverage-guided fuzzer, differential analysis, rich observables for grounded divergence detection, cross-iteration divergence memory, and best-candidate retention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Begin with a small corpus whose expected outputs have been checked manually.
  2. Mutate inputs while running the original and candidate under the same harness and resource limits.
  3. Record the observable that diverged, the input, coverage reached in each implementation, and the first checkpoint that differed.
  4. Minimize each failing input while preserving the same divergence category.
  5. Add the minimized case to a permanent regression corpus before attempting a repair.
  6. Continue fuzzing after a fix; a repaired branch can expose a different width, aliasing, or error-path defect.

Do not treat increased coverage in the candidate as proof of correctness. Extra coverage can mean the candidate accepts an input the original rejects, or that its control flow is wrong.

Minimize failures and locate the first divergence

A large fuzzing input often triggers several downstream differences. Use delta debugging or an equivalent reduction process to remove bytes, fields, repetitions, and environmental events while the original mismatch remains. Keep the reduction criterion precise—for example, “same return-code disagreement and same output-buffer offset”—so minimization does not switch to a different bug.

Trace from the boundary inward

First compare the function’s entry arguments and initial memory. Then walk checkpoints in execution order. If arguments match but the first comparison result differs, inspect operand widths, sign extension, and the instruction that sets flags. If checkpoints match until an indirect call, enumerate its possible targets and instrument the callback or imported function. If the first difference is a structure read, verify the base pointer, offset, alignment, and aliasing assumptions before changing the field type.

Repair one hypothesis at a time

Change only the smallest supported explanation—for example, replace a signed comparison with an unsigned one, correct a structure offset, add a missing jump-table default edge, or model an indirect target. Regenerate only the affected code, run the minimized reproducer, and then execute the full regression set. Multiple simultaneous edits destroy the evidence showing which hypothesis was correct.

Common reverse-engineering errors and concrete fixes

Observed error Evidence to inspect Repair approach
Wrong function boundary Entry point, predecessor and successor edges, returns, tail calls, and neighboring bytes Rerun function discovery and reconstruct the boundary from control flow; do not fill a truncated region with invented statements
Calling-convention mismatch Argument registers or stack slots, stack cleanup, preserved registers, return register, and all call sites Correct the signature and ABI model, then regenerate dependent calls and retest each caller
Signedness or width error Flag-setting instruction, operand width, loads, extensions, and comparisons Match the machine width and signed interpretation; add negative, high-bit, truncation, and extension tests
Bad pointer or structure model Alignment, field offsets, access widths, aliasing, and every use of the base pointer Reconstruct layout from all accesses before naming fields; verify with memory checkpoints
Omitted indirect-call target Dispatch tables, virtual calls, callbacks, imports, and runtime traces Enumerate targets and exercise them with targeted inputs; keep unresolved targets explicitly marked
Switch or jump-table error Bounds checks, index scaling, default edge, computed targets, and fall-through Rebuild the complete table and compare every edge with the graph
Compiler idiom misread Instruction sequence and p-code rather than a familiar source pattern Describe the machine-level operation first; only then choose a source construct that preserves it
Hallucinated intent Names, comments, API guesses, and algorithm claims lacking data-flow support Keep the claim as a hypothesis and require an instruction or call-site reason before relying on it

Use binary similarity as corroboration, not a verdict

When a codebase contains copied, templated, or related routines, BSim can help prioritize investigation. Similar normalized feature vectors may reveal that two functions share data-flow and control-flow characteristics even when names are absent. Similarity is especially useful for finding neighboring implementations, library variants, or likely clones that provide context for a missing routine.

Similarity does not establish identical boundary conditions, error handling, side effects, or behavior under unusual inputs. Confirm any proposed correspondence with instruction-level inspection and differential tests. A low similarity score also does not prove that two functions differ semantically; compiler choices and optimization can alter features.

Choosing a validation workflow

Manual, AI-assisted, and automated recovery workflows have different strengths. Choose based on the evidence you need, not on how readable the output appears.

Validation axis Manual Ghidra workflow AI-assisted workflow Automated recovery framework
Control-flow fidelity High when the analyst checks every edge; limited by time Variable; requires graph and p-code review Can scale checks, but must handle unusual control flow and tool-specific blind spots
Type and data-structure fidelity Depends on cross-use analysis and analyst judgment Fast hypothesis generation, weak authority for names and types Potentially consistent if type constraints are encoded and validated
Compilability Usually checked incrementally Must be enforced with a reproducible build and warning review Can compile candidates automatically and reject failures
Differential behavioral agreement Often narrow unless a harness is built Requires the same harness; prose cannot establish it Core strength when observables and environments are controlled
Path and coverage reach Strong local reasoning, limited exploration Can generate tests, but generated cases need grounding Coverage-guided exploration can discover deep paths
Failure reproducibility Good if artifacts are recorded Prompt and model output must be frozen Requires retained seeds, traces, and deterministic settings
Repair explainability High when each edit maps to an instruction Must demand an evidence-backed rationale Can preserve automated traces, but opaque ranking needs review
Indirect calls, optimized code, and obfuscation Flexible but labor-intensive Prone to plausible omissions without runtime evidence Scalable only when target enumeration and observables are robust
Analyst time Highest for large corpora Lower for first drafts, with verification time still required Higher setup cost, lower marginal cost for repeated runs

Published work on decompiler output identifies recurring structural inaccuracies and evaluates candidates with recompilation and dynamic testing. That evidence supports a layered process, not a universal accuracy percentage. Results vary with architecture, compiler, optimization level, obfuscation, binary corpus, metric definition, and test-generation method.

Report confidence without overstating recovery

A useful report separates what was observed from what was inferred. State the exact binary and function examined, the paths exercised, the observables compared, and the unresolved regions.

Confidence label Required evidence Permitted claim
Structural match Boundary, edges, calls, returns, widths, and p-code relationships reconciled The candidate’s analyzed structure agrees with the inspected instruction behavior
Build-verified Reproducible compilation with warnings reviewed The candidate builds under the recorded settings
Behaviorally checked Equivalent observables for a documented test set, including failure and boundary cases The candidate matched the original for those exercised cases
Coverage-supported Fuzzing and minimized regressions cover the relevant reachable paths Confidence is increased for the explored path space, not for unvisited behavior
Unresolved Indirect targets, environment-dependent effects, anti-analysis regions, or self-modifying code remain Describe the limitation explicitly; do not claim source recovery

Even a candidate that passes extensive tests may represent behavioral similarity rather than the original source or intent. Say “matches the tested behavior” when that is the evidence, and reserve stronger language for claims directly supported by the binary.

Regression checklist for every repair

  • Binary hash, architecture, ABI clues, load and function addresses, tool version, settings, prompt, and output are archived.
  • Function boundary, predecessor and successor edges, returns, tail calls, indirect calls, and switch targets are reconciled.
  • Argument locations, preserved registers, stack cleanup, return values, widths, signedness, offsets, alignment, and aliasing are checked.
  • The candidate compiles reproducibly; warnings are reviewed rather than suppressed without explanation.
  • The harness compares return values, buffers, errors, files, external effects, and relevant state under controlled conditions.
  • Boundary, malformed, overflow, null, and failure-path inputs are included.
  • Every mismatch is retained, minimized, labeled, and added to the regression corpus.
  • Coverage-guided fuzzing runs after each repair, with the original and candidate receiving identical inputs.
  • Unresolved indirect targets, unexercised paths, environment dependencies, anti-analysis behavior, and self-modifying regions are marked.
  • The final report distinguishes verified behavior from inferred intent and states the exact scope of the claim.

The Bottom Line

Validate AI decompilation as an evidence chain: instructions and p-code establish structure, compilation checks the candidate’s integrity, differential execution tests observable behavior, and coverage-guided fuzzing exposes paths a hand-picked suite misses. Repair the first localized divergence, preserve its minimized reproducer, and claim only the behavior your tests and binary evidence actually support.
