To remove stubborn pet hair, prevent some of it from coming indoors, choose a vacuum setting suited to the floor, and vacuum slowly. On carpet, change direction for a few passes to lift hair that is caught in the pile. These five practical steps help you clean more efficiently while reducing the risk of using the wrong brush on delicate flooring.
1. Keep some dirt and hair at the door
Place a doormat at entrances and keep a towel nearby to wipe your pet’s paws, particularly in wet weather. Catching hair and debris before they spread across the floor means less to pick up later.

2. Match the vacuum to the floor
Before cleaning, check both your flooring manufacturer’s care guidance and your vacuum’s manual. Use a hard-floor or bare-floor setting when the machine and surface call for it. Brush heads and controls vary: a rotating brush can be unsuitable for some delicate floors and may fuzz some carpets.

That is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent comparison of vacuum performance. If you are choosing a pet hair vacuum with a hard-floor setting, look for surface controls and a supplied head that are suitable for your floors, as well as a brush bar that is practical to clear.

3. Vacuum slowly and methodically
Move the vacuum at a measured pace rather than rushing through the room. Dyson’s cleaning guidance recommends slow, methodical passes to give the airflow and brush time to collect hair. This is manufacturer advice, and the best setting and technique still depend on your vacuum and floor.
4. Change direction on carpet
On carpet, make a few passes in alternating directions. Changing the approach can disturb hair caught in the pile and give the vacuum another angle from which to collect it. Dyson reports that its own research found little additional gain after two or three passes; the study method is not detailed in the article, so treat that as manufacturer-reported guidance rather than an independent rule for every carpet and vacuum.

5. Clean regularly and maintain the brush
Regular vacuuming helps prevent hair from building up into larger accumulations. Check the brush bar for tangled hair or fibers and clear it according to the instructions for your specific model. Turn the vacuum off or disconnect it as the manual directs before carrying out maintenance; do not assume another model’s controls or procedure apply to yours.
For hair in corners and tight spots
A microfiber cloth can help pick up hair in crevices or places the vacuum head cannot reach easily. Its electrostatically charged fibers make it a useful follow-up for those spots, not a replacement for vacuuming the floor.

What to check when choosing a vacuum
- Whether it has a floor setting or brush control suitable for your mix of hard floors and carpet.
- Whether the included floor head is appropriate for your flooring.
- How easily you can remove tangled hair from the brush bar, following the model’s manual.
- Whether filtration claims clearly identify the manufacturer and product range. For example, Dyson’s product page makes specific filtration claims for its own vacuums; those figures do not establish pet-hair pickup performance or apply to every vacuum.
There is no independent performance ranking established here to identify one vacuum as best for pet hair, so compare those practical features against your floors and cleaning needs.
