ZoomEye can help you find candidate internet-facing assets associated with identifiers your organization controls. Treat its results as leads, not as proof that an asset is yours, currently reachable, or vulnerable: validate each candidate against your own authoritative records before adding it to an inventory or assigning remediation.
What ZoomEye can—and cannot—tell you
ZoomEye is an internet asset search service with browser and API access. Its reference describes searches across IPv4 and IPv6 devices and websites, including keyword matching across protocol and web data. Depending on the account and available fields, results can include IP addresses, domains, URLs, hostnames, ports, services, operating-system information, and page titles. Check the current ZoomEye site and API reference for the fields and permissions available to your account.

A result is an observation, not an ownership record or a security verdict. A matching domain, address, or service banner does not by itself establish that your organization owns the system, that it is in scope, or that it is exploitable. ZoomEye’s documented asset search should not be described as a vulnerability scan.
Prepare a bounded, authorized scope
Before searching, write down which organization and systems you are authorized to assess. Include known domains, public IP ranges, subsidiaries, and relevant cloud or hosting relationships; note exclusions and systems managed by third parties. Search only identifiers you are authorized to assess.
Start from identifiers already present in records you control, such as authoritative DNS, cloud accounts, network allocations, certificates, and an asset register. These provide a baseline for checking matches, not a guarantee that discovery is complete.

Search known identifiers and refine the query
Begin with familiar domains and addresses
Search known domains and public IP addresses first, then consider organization or network identifiers available to you. The ZoomEye API reference documents search across devices and websites. Its query syntax describes = for keyword matching and == for exact matching, with &&, ||, !=, and parentheses for combining conditions.
The reference says keyword matching is generally case-insensitive and segmented, while exact matching has stricter case behavior. Query fields and access can vary by account, and the reference was updated on 2024-12-04; consult the current documentation before relying on a particular field or syntax.

Keep a record of each search
For every query, save its text, the date, and the identifiers or conditions used. This makes results easier to reproduce and helps distinguish a genuine change from a changed query or account capability.
Use the API without exposing credentials
The current ZoomEye agent documentation describes API-key authentication using the API-KEY request header. It lists POST /v2/search for asset searches and POST /v2/userinfo for user and quota information, with https://api.zoomeye.ai as the API base URL. Check the official agent documentation for current operational details.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
- Keep the API key in a protected secret store or other server-side configuration. Do not put a real key in source code, prompts, URLs, screenshots, or client-side JavaScript.
- Check both the HTTP status and the response code, and confirm account and quota state before a large job.
- Do not repeatedly send an unchanged request after authentication, permission, malformed-query, or exhausted-quota errors. Correct the cause first.
- For transient failures, use exponential backoff rather than rapid repeated requests.
Quota examples in documentation are illustrative response data, not a promise of your account’s current allowance. Verify current endpoint, authentication, and quota details in the official documentation.
Capture evidence, then validate ownership
For each potentially relevant result, retain enough detail to let an asset owner investigate it. Record the search date and query, result identifier, IP or domain, port and service, hostname, and any relevant operating-system or page-title information exposed to your account. Label inferred or banner-derived details as observations rather than confirmed facts.
Compare candidates with authoritative DNS records, cloud account inventories, provider or IP allocations, certificates, configuration records, and your asset register. Ask the responsible internal team to confirm ambiguous matches. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s EASM buyer guidance describes discovery as drawing on multiple technical and non-technical sources; it also notes that cloud-provider connectors can improve coverage.

Classify each candidate so uncertainty is visible rather than silently converted into an ownership claim. A practical starting set is:
- Confirmed owned: records or the responsible team verify the asset.
- Likely owned, pending confirmation: evidence points to the organization, but an owner has not verified it.
- Third-party or hosted: the system appears related to the organization but is operated by a provider or another party; confirm scope and responsibility.
- Unknown: ownership or scope remains unresolved.
Assign an internal owner and next action to confirmed exposures, and give uncertain matches a named reviewer and follow-up date. Prioritize review using business importance, unexpected exposure, sensitive service type, and any separate vulnerability evidence available to your team. A listed port or service alone does not prove a vulnerability or exploitability.

Repeat discovery and understand its limits
Keep dated snapshots and track newly observed, removed, confirmed, and unresolved candidates. This supports change review and helps expose gaps in your records. The NCSC guidance discusses history and trends as EASM capabilities, but the reviewed ZoomEye materials do not establish what historical tracking is included in each ZoomEye plan.
ZoomEye is one outside-in discovery input, not a complete internal inventory. The NCSC describes broader EASM capabilities that can include service identification, web security, vulnerability assessment, and history or trends; those category-level capabilities should not be assumed to be included in ZoomEye’s documented asset search.
When a broader EASM service may be appropriate
If you need a managed, continuously maintained view rather than a search-based candidate list, compare tools against the work your team needs to perform. Useful criteria include discovery coverage and data sources, cloud-provider connectors, refresh cadence and change history, service and web-configuration detail, vulnerability-assessment capabilities, APIs and integrations, permissions and costs, and support for ownership verification.
The NCSC buyer guidance discusses these as relevant EASM capability dimensions. Microsoft describes Defender External Attack Surface Management as continuously discovering and mapping an organization’s digital attack surface. That is an example of a managed EASM offering, not evidence of a like-for-like comparison with ZoomEye.
