How to Use YouTube’s Conversational Search (Ask YouTube) to Find Videos

YouTube’s conversational search, labeled Ask YouTube, lets you describe what you want in a natural-language question instead of building a query from keywords. On a computer, open YouTube, select the Search bar, choose Ask YouTube, and submit your question. You can then select a suggested prompt or type another question in Ask a follow-up. On supported TVs, open YouTube Home or Search, choose the on-screen Ask button (or use the keyboard or remote microphone), and select Ask YouTube if it does not launch automatically.

The feature is still rolling out. As of October 13, 2026, YouTube Help says it is available to users in the United States who search in English on computers, mobile devices and TVs, with wider availability planned. It is not available to supervised child accounts, YouTube Kids or Apple TV. Generated answers can be wrong, so verify important information independently.

What YouTube’s conversational search does

Ask YouTube turns a video search into a back-and-forth conversation. You can ask for a result, explain the task behind the search, and refine the answer without starting over with a new keyword query. YouTube’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes it as a tool for complex questions, follow-up questions and interactive results, including voice use from the couch.

An answer can combine explanatory text with regular long-form videos, Shorts and relevant clips. A clip may begin at a timestamp that YouTube identifies as useful for your question, and the result shows the creator’s channel name and video title. Search responses are selected using relevance, engagement and quality signals. Playlists and Premium-exclusive content are not currently eligible for these responses.

Ask YouTube is a discovery and explanation layer, not a guarantee that every recommendation is complete or correct. YouTube Help states that generated responses are informational, do not represent YouTube’s views, and can vary in quality and accuracy.

Who can use Ask YouTube right now

Availability changes as YouTube expands the rollout. The following conditions reflect YouTube Help information dated October 13, 2026 and the company’s October 12 announcement.

Requirement or context Current status
Country Available in the United States; rollout is gradually expanding.
Search language English.
Supported device types Computer, mobile device and TV device.
Supervised child account Not available.
YouTube Kids Not available.
Apple TV Not available for the TV experience.
Playlists and Premium-exclusive videos Not eligible to appear in Ask YouTube responses at this time.

If your account and device meet the listed conditions but the control is missing, the most likely explanation is that your account is in a later stage of the rollout. YouTube does not promise that every eligible user receives the feature simultaneously.

Use Ask YouTube on a computer

  1. Open YouTube. Use YouTube in a desktop or laptop browser.
  2. Select the Search bar. Look for the conversational-search option labeled Ask YouTube.
  3. Choose Ask YouTube. This opens the conversational search interface rather than a conventional keyword-results page.
  4. Write a complete question or task. Explain what you want to find, who it is for, and any useful limits such as duration, skill level, location or budget.
  5. Submit the prompt. Review the generated explanation and the accompanying video results, Shorts or clips.
  6. Refine the result if needed. Select one of YouTube’s suggested prompts or type a new request in the Ask a follow-up field.

A short keyword such as “Santa Barbara” gives the system less direction than a complete request. For example, ask for “a three-day road-trip plan from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, with scenic stops and videos that show the routes.” The extra context tells Ask YouTube what the search is for and how the results should be organized.

Use Ask YouTube on a phone or tablet

  1. Open the YouTube mobile app or mobile YouTube experience on a supported device.
  2. Open Search and look for the Ask YouTube option.
  3. Enter a natural-language question. You can type the request rather than reducing it to a few keywords.
  4. Review the answer and video set. Results may include full videos, Shorts and clips selected around relevant moments.
  5. Continue the conversation. Tap a suggested prompt or enter your own request in Ask a follow-up to narrow the topic, change the format or ask for more detail.

If you prefer speaking, use the microphone control when it is offered. Voice input is useful for longer requests, but check the transcribed question before submitting when names, places or numbers matter.

Use Ask YouTube on a television

  1. Open YouTube Home or Search on a supported TV device.
  2. Choose the on-screen Ask button. Depending on the device, you may reach it with the remote’s navigation keys, an on-screen keyboard or the remote microphone.
  3. Select Ask YouTube if the conversational interface does not open automatically.
  4. Speak or type your request. Use the remote microphone for a spoken prompt, or enter it with the on-screen keyboard.
  5. Review the response and videos. Ask YouTube can return explanatory text alongside videos, Shorts and clips.
  6. Ask a follow-up. Use the microphone or choose a suggested prompt to adjust the search without returning to the beginning.

The TV rollout does not include Apple TV according to YouTube Help. A missing Ask button on another television does not necessarily indicate a fault; country, language, account type and staged rollout all affect availability.

Write prompts that produce useful video results

Describe the outcome, not just the subject

Start with the thing you want to accomplish. “Teach me to change a bicycle tire” is more actionable than “bicycle tire.” Ask YouTube can then look for demonstrations and explanations that match the task.

Add audience, level and constraints

State whether the viewer is a beginner, child, student or experienced user. Add practical limits such as “under 15 minutes,” “no special tools,” “for a small apartment” or “show the steps slowly.” Constraints help the response distinguish a quick overview from a detailed tutorial.

Specify the format or presentation style

You can request a preferred tone or style. For example, ask for a concise comparison, a step-by-step lesson, a visual demonstration or an explanation using plain language. The system may still return different video lengths and formats, but the instruction gives the conversational search a clearer target.

Use a multi-part prompt for a complex search

Ask for several connected needs in one request when they belong to the same task. YouTube’s examples include planning a three-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, getting step-by-step help teaching a child to ride a bike, comparing noise-canceling headphones for travel and planning a budget road trip. A prompt could specify the route, the number of days, the desired budget and whether scenic or practical stops matter.

Use follow-ups to correct the direction

Follow-ups are most useful when they change one variable at a time. After a broad answer, ask for “only beginner videos,” “clips showing the setup,” “options under 10 minutes,” “a second opinion” or “more detail about the safety step.” If the first response misunderstood the goal, restate the goal explicitly instead of assuming the system inferred it.

How to judge the results you receive

Read the explanation and inspect the source videos

The text portion is a convenience for organizing the search, not a substitute for watching the underlying material. Open the creator’s video when the method, date, equipment or context matters. Check that the title and channel match what the answer describes, especially when a clip begins in the middle of a longer video.

Compare more than one result

YouTube recommends checking important information in more than one place. Ask several versions of the question, request different opinions or ask for more detail. Agreement between videos is useful, but it is not proof that a claim is correct; independent sources and current primary information remain important.

Do not use generated answers as professional advice

YouTube warns that Ask YouTube output is informational and that quality and accuracy vary. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial or other professional decisions. For those subjects, use the conversational search to locate background material, then confirm the advice with a qualified professional or an authoritative source.

Watch for scope and date problems

A video can be relevant to the words in your prompt but still use an older product version, different laws, another country’s rules or equipment you do not have. Before following instructions, check the publication date, geographic context, required tools and any safety warnings in the actual video.

Why you may not see the Ask YouTube button

You are outside the current rollout

As of October 13, 2026, YouTube Help lists the United States as the available market and says expansion is gradual. Users in other countries may not have the control yet, even if they can see announcements about it.

Your search language is not English

The current Help Center availability statement covers searches in English. A different interface language or query language can therefore prevent the option from appearing during this phase.

Your account is supervised or uses YouTube Kids

Ask YouTube is unavailable to supervised child accounts and in YouTube Kids. This is an account or product limitation, not a browser or television error.

Your TV is Apple TV

YouTube Help specifically excludes Apple TV from the TV experience. The absence of the feature there is expected under the current rollout.

Your account has not received the staged rollout

Even in the United States on a supported device, YouTube may enable the feature at different times. Check again later and look for the option from YouTube Search rather than expecting a separate application or purchase. The documented workflow does not require special hardware or a paid plan.

Privacy and conversation history

YouTube says it collects queries and feedback submitted through Ask YouTube to provide, improve and develop its products and services. It also says conversations are not used to show ads.

Past conversations can be reviewed or deleted in My Activity. Deleting a topic from search-bar history removes only the latest conversation for that topic; earlier conversations about the same topic may remain. Deletion therefore requires checking the relevant activity history rather than relying only on the most recent search-bar entry.

YouTube says trained human reviewers may read and process conversations. Before review, YouTube disconnects conversations from Google Accounts and uses automated tools to remove personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Conversations reviewed by humans are kept separately for up to three years.

Do not enter passwords, private health details, confidential work information, financial account data or another person’s sensitive information into an Ask YouTube prompt. Use a general description when the personal detail is not necessary to find a video.

A practical workflow for better searches

  1. Define the job. Decide whether you need instruction, comparison, planning, troubleshooting or background explanation.
  2. Add the viewer context. Include skill level, age group, available equipment, location or time limit.
  3. Ask in one complete sentence. Include the desired video style or result format when that matters.
  4. Review the first response critically. Check whether the videos actually address the requested task and constraints.
  5. Refine with one focused follow-up. Change the audience, length, difficulty, location or point of view rather than rewriting everything at once.
  6. Verify consequential claims. Compare sources and confirm current details outside the generated response before acting.
  7. Remove sensitive history when appropriate. Review My Activity and delete conversations you no longer want stored, remembering that topic deletion may leave earlier conversations.
