Menu names and availability can differ by Fold model, One UI version, region, and YouTube build, so the labels on your phone may not be identical.
If you only need a small video window over another app, use YouTube picture-in-picture (PiP) instead. PiP is a floating window and is not the same as Samsung’s split-screen layout.

What you need before starting
The split-screen feature is part of Samsung Multi window. It works on the Fold’s large inner display and requires two apps that support Multi window on your software version. You do not need a stand, case, stylus, subscription, or other accessory.

- Unfold the phone so the main display is open.
- Install and open the current YouTube app available for your device.
- Have the second app ready to launch, such as a browser, notes app, messaging app, or another supported application.
- Keep in mind that compatibility is per app. Samsung warns that some apps do not support Multi window.
The practical route documented for the Galaxy Z Fold4 is Recents followed by the YouTube app icon. Current Fold models use the same general Multi window concept, but Samsung can move or rename controls in later One UI releases.

Open YouTube and another app in split screen
- Unfold the phone. Open the main inner screen rather than trying to arrange the panes on the narrow cover display.
- Launch YouTube. Start the video you want to watch. You can begin playback before or after creating the split-screen layout.
- Open Recents. Use your normal navigation method: the Recents button if you use three-button navigation, or the Recents gesture if you use gesture navigation. You should see YouTube as an app card.
- Open YouTube’s card menu. Tap the YouTube app icon at the top of its Recents card. Do not tap the video preview itself; the icon opens the app-specific options.
- Choose “Open in split screen view.” The upper or primary pane will be reserved for YouTube, and the phone will show apps that can fill the other pane.
- Select the second app. Tap the app you want to use below or beside YouTube. If it is not shown, it may not support Multi window, may not be open in Recents, or may be excluded by the current software.
- Wait for both panes to load. YouTube should remain visible in one pane while the second app opens in the other. Rotate or unfold the device only after the layout is established if the interface behaves unexpectedly.
Samsung’s exact placement of the panes depends on orientation and software. The important sequence is YouTube in Recents, YouTube icon, Open in split screen view, then a second app.
Resize the panes and manage the split-screen session
Give one app more space
A divider separates the two panes. On software versions that expose the control, press and drag that divider toward YouTube or toward the second app. Moving it toward an app gives that app more room; moving it back produces a more even arrangement. Very narrow panes can cause an app to reflow its controls or hide some labels.
Switch which app is active
Tap inside the pane you want to use. Text entry, scrolling, and other touch input go to the active pane. YouTube playback controls appear when you tap the video area; they do not change the underlying Multi window arrangement.

Use an app pair when you repeat the same combination
Samsung Multi window can offer an app-pair shortcut after you have arranged two compatible apps. If your Fold shows an app-pair control in the split-screen toolbar, save the pair and launch it later from the available shortcut location. The wording and placement of that control vary by device and One UI version, so do not assume every Fold exposes it.
Close one pane
Drag the divider completely toward the app you want to dismiss, or use the split-screen controls shown on your device. The remaining app returns to a normal full-screen view when the other pane closes. If your software shows a close button instead, use that button rather than forcing the app away from Recents.

Start split screen from Samsung’s Multi window tray
Supported Fold models can provide a Multi window tray or edge panel containing app shortcuts. Samsung describes dragging an app from that tray into a screen position to start split screen or pop-up view.
- Open the Multi window tray using the gesture or edge-panel control configured on your Fold.
- Drag YouTube, or the app you want to add, toward the indicated upper, lower, left, or right drop zone.
- Choose the second app when the phone presents the available choices.
- Adjust the divider after both apps appear.
Tray availability, the gesture used to reveal it, and the drop-zone animation vary by model and software. If you do not see a tray, use the Recents method; it is the clearest documented route for the Fold4 and remains the most portable procedure across Fold generations.
When YouTube is missing from the split-screen choices
Check whether the app is actually eligible
Some apps declare that they cannot run in Multi window. A missing YouTube option can also result from a temporary app state, an outdated build, or a layout change after an update. Return to the normal YouTube screen, open Recents again, and tap the YouTube icon to check the menu one more time. If the second app is missing instead, test with another app to determine which side is limiting the session.
Try “Multi window for all apps” in Labs
Samsung provides an experimental setting on some devices that can allow apps not designed for the layout to open in split screen or pop-up view:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Labs.
- Look for Multi window for all apps.
- Turn the option on if it is present, then try the Recents procedure again.
Labs is experimental. The option may be absent on your model or software version, and enabling it does not guarantee that every app will render correctly. An app can open but show clipped controls, an unusable text field, incorrect scaling, or a crash. If that happens, turn the experimental option off and use supported apps or YouTube PiP.

Why the Labs switch may not solve the problem
- The setting is not offered on every Fold generation, region, or One UI release.
- The app may actively block resizing or depend on a fixed aspect ratio.
- The app may technically open in a pane but not be usable at the available width.
- An update can change compatibility without changing the phone’s Multi window settings.
Use YouTube picture-in-picture instead
PiP is better when your priority is keeping the video visible while you work in another app, rather than giving YouTube a full pane. The video becomes a small, movable window above the app underneath it.

Enable Android’s PiP permission
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Open the app settings list and select YouTube.
- Find the Picture-in-picture permission.
- Turn on Allow picture-in-picture.
The exact location of app permissions can be labeled slightly differently by One UI version, but the required control is the YouTube app’s Android PiP permission.
Enable PiP inside YouTube
- Open YouTube.
- Tap your account or profile control to open YouTube’s settings.
- Open Playback.
- Enable the PiP setting shown there.
YouTube documents both the Android permission and its own Playback setting. Both need to be enabled for the normal PiP workflow.
Enter PiP while a video plays
- Start a video in YouTube.
- Leave YouTube using the Home gesture or Home button rather than closing the app from Recents.
- The video should shrink into a floating window.
- Drag the floating window to a convenient corner while using the other app.
PiP controls can include pause, resume, close, or a return-to-YouTube action. The controls and window size can change between Android and YouTube releases. PiP does not create two equal panes and does not depend on the second app being Multi window-compatible in the same way as split screen.
Content restrictions to know
YouTube notes that some music content is available in PiP only to Premium members. If PiP works for ordinary videos but not for a particular music video or other restricted content, the behavior may be a content entitlement rather than a Fold fault.

Split screen or PiP: which should you choose?

Troubleshooting by symptom
“Open in split screen view” does not appear
Make sure you are tapping the YouTube icon above its Recents card, not the card preview. If the menu still lacks the command, the current YouTube build or phone software may not expose split screen for that state. Check Settings > Advanced features > Labs for Multi window for all apps, understanding that the switch is experimental. You can also use PiP if your goal is simply persistent video.
The second app is not listed
The second app may not support Multi window. Open a different app from the choices, or test whether the app appears in Recents before starting the split. If it never appears as an eligible choice, do not assume that reinstalling YouTube will change the second app’s compatibility.
YouTube opens, then stops or shows a broken layout
This is consistent with an app that does not handle the available pane size correctly, particularly after enabling the Labs override. Close that split-screen session, disable the experimental setting, and retry with the normal supported-app route. PiP avoids forcing YouTube into a narrow pane.
The video controls cover the picture
Tap outside the video or wait for the YouTube controls to hide. This affects YouTube’s playback overlay, not the Samsung divider. If the divider itself is difficult to move, rotate the unfolded phone or close and recreate the split so the layout is recalculated.

Verify both switches: Android’s YouTube permission must say Allow picture-in-picture, and YouTube’s own Playback setting must have PiP enabled. Then test with a standard video rather than content that may have a Premium-only PiP restriction. Leaving YouTube through Home is the normal trigger; force-closing it from Recents will not produce a floating window.
The menu labels do not match these instructions
Samsung’s Fold4 instructions provide a practical example, while current general Fold guidance can use different labels or locations. Look for the same functions—Recents app menu, split-screen view, Multi window, Labs, and PiP—even when capitalization or wording differs. A software update can also move controls without removing the underlying feature.
Version and model caveats
There is no single menu sequence guaranteed for every Galaxy Z Fold generation, One UI release, region, and YouTube build. The Recents path is documented for the Fold4, and Samsung’s broader foldable guidance describes Multi window across supported Fold devices. Treat the visible labels on your phone as authoritative when they differ from the examples here.
Compatibility also changes independently on the two sides of the experience. Samsung controls the phone-level Multi window behavior, while YouTube controls its own playback and PiP settings. A YouTube update can alter full-screen or PiP behavior without changing Samsung’s split-screen menu, and a One UI update can change the menu while YouTube itself remains unchanged.

- Unfold the Fold and open YouTube.
- Open Recents and tap the YouTube icon.
- Select Open in split screen view.
- Tap the second supported app.
- Drag the divider to set the balance you need.
- If YouTube is not eligible, check Settings > Advanced features > Labs > Multi window for all apps only if that option exists, or switch to PiP.
- For PiP, enable Android’s Allow picture-in-picture permission and YouTube’s Playback PiP setting, then leave YouTube while a video is playing.
Use split screen when both apps need meaningful working space. Use PiP when the video should remain visible but secondary. Both are built-in software features, and neither requires additional hardware.
