You can use YouTube channel memberships to add member-only chat to a public 24/7 broadcast, or to run a separate stream that only members can watch. The first option keeps the video open to everyone; the second makes the broadcast itself exclusive. Before choosing either, plan your recording and archive workflow: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as replays.
Choose how members will participate

These are different offers. If you use members-only chat, tell viewers explicitly that the video remains public and membership unlocks the ability to post. YouTube explains the chat setting in its channel memberships levels and perks guidance; its members-only live stream guidance covers restricted broadcasts.

Check eligibility and set up membership perks
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships and check whether memberships are available for your channel. Eligibility and availability depend on YouTube’s current requirements, location availability, and policies.
- Create membership levels and benefits that you can deliver reliably alongside a continuous broadcast. YouTube currently allows up to 6 levels, with 1 to 5 perks per level. New levels and perks are reviewed before going live; YouTube says the review takes about a day. See its membership levels and perks instructions.
- Choose benefits that work with the way you operate the channel. YouTube lists possible perks including badges, custom emoji, posts, members-first videos, members-only live chat, members-only streams, milestone chats, the recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Check the current rules before promising a perk, because not every option is available to every channel or location.
Turn on members-only chat for a public 24/7 stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and find the Live chat controls.
- Enable members-only chat and save the change.
Viewers who are not members can still watch the public video, but they cannot send chat messages while the restriction is active. Make that distinction clear in the stream description or an on-screen notice so public viewers do not mistake the chat restriction for a viewing error.
Make a broadcast members-only
For genuinely exclusive programming, create a separate members-only live stream or set the stream’s visibility to Members only. Where available, you can limit access to selected membership levels. Nonmembers may see the stream’s thumbnail and metadata but cannot watch it. Confirm the visibility and level settings before going live using YouTube’s members-only streaming guidance.

Use live chat and gifts without confusing members
- Badges and emoji: Members may use channel badges and custom emoji in live chat when those perks are available.
- New-member messages: When someone joins during a live stream, YouTube displays a new-member message in chat and pins the member’s profile image for five minutes.
- Milestone chats: Eligible members can send a milestone chat beginning with their second consecutive month. The highlighted message is visible to all viewers, not just members.
- Gift memberships: On eligible live streams or Premieres, viewers can offer gift memberships. A viewer must opt in to be eligible to receive one. Gift access lasts up to one month and is non-recurring, so it does not automatically turn into a paid recurring membership.
Availability and details for benefits can change; consult YouTube’s membership benefits guidance and gift membership instructions when setting expectations.
Protect the replay and account for the 12-hour limit
Do not assume YouTube will save a complete replay of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Very long streams have a separate playback limitation: YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to scrub back through the entire continuous broadcast. Details are in its DVR guidance.

If you need a usable archive, plan where recordings will be stored and how they will be checked and retained. Splitting a continuous broadcast into shorter sessions may be a workflow to investigate, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee that a particular restart schedule will preserve continuity, membership access, or analytics. Verify the behavior for your own setup before relying on it.
Start the broadcast with an encoder
YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Dedicated hardware is an option for higher-production events, not a prerequisite for using memberships or starting a live stream; YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. Its official setup is:
- In YouTube Studio, create a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into your encoder.
- Start the video feed from the encoder, then confirm the stream is live in Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Keep it private and replace it if it is exposed. YouTube’s complete instructions are in creating a live stream with an encoder and its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common membership and 24/7 stream issues
- Public viewers cannot chat: Members-only chat is enabled. If chat should be open to everyone, change the Live chat setting; if the restriction is intentional, state that watching remains public but posting requires membership.
- A nonmember cannot watch the broadcast: The stream may be set to Members only. Check visibility and any membership-level restriction in Studio.
- The stream has no complete replay: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Keep a local recording rather than treating YouTube’s archive as the only copy.
- Viewers cannot rewind to the beginning: DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. This is distinct from whether an archive is created.
- A new perk is not available yet: YouTube reviews levels and perks before publication; its current guidance says review takes about a day. Check the perk’s status and channel eligibility.
- The encoder will not connect: Verify that the correct server URL and stream key were copied into the encoder and that the feed has been started. If the key may have been exposed, replace it before broadcasting again.
