The safest approach is to back up anything you need, identify the SSD by its exact model, and run the erase or sanitize procedure documented by that drive’s manufacturer. These operations are intended to make previous data inaccessible and are normally irreversible. If the SSD contains the operating system currently in use, move it to a supported secondary or bootable environment instead of trying to erase it from within that installation.
What secure erase and sanitize actually do
Deleting files, emptying the recycle bin, or performing a quick format usually changes filesystem information rather than deliberately sanitizing every area managed by an SSD controller. A manufacturer’s secure-erase, sanitize, NVMe-format, or equivalent command is designed for the drive’s flash-management architecture.

NIST Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2, finalized on September 26, 2025, defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” Revision 2 supersedes Revision 1. The appropriate method depends on how sensitive the information is and on the policy that governs it. A completed progress bar is not, by itself, a universal guarantee that a particular organizational policy has been met.

Intel documents NVMe Format Secure Erase Setting values as 0 (no secure erase), 1 (user-data erase), and 2 (crypto erase). Those values are not a promise that every SSD exposes the same choices.
Before you open the erase utility
Back up data and recovery material
Copy documents, photographs, application data, encryption keys, password-manager exports, license records, and recovery information that you may need later. Check the backup by opening representative files. Once the destructive confirmation is accepted, assume the contents cannot be recovered. Samsung’s documentation specifically states that PSID Revert deletes all data.
Identify the exact target
Record the SSD’s full model number, capacity, and interface (SATA or NVMe). Use the label on the drive and the operating system’s storage information, then compare both with the utility’s device list. A tool detecting a drive does not prove that every erase feature is supported for it. This matters especially when a computer contains an OEM drive whose branding differs from the retail product family.

Get the manufacturer’s current software
Download the utility and instructions from the SSD maker’s official support site. Samsung’s Magician product supports Samsung-branded memory products, but its features can vary on Samsung OEM and non-Samsung drives. The current Samsung support listing identifies Magician 9.0.1 downloads for Windows and macOS; detailed bootable and PSID behavior in the cited installation guide is from Magician 8.0.0, so check the current guide for your model rather than assuming the older caveats are unchanged.
Intel’s Memory and Storage Tool is intended for supported Intel SSDs. Do not substitute it merely because it detects a non-Intel device, and do not assume a third-party utility provides the same manufacturer-level operation.
Reduce the chance of selecting the wrong disk
If practical, disconnect other internal and external storage before the destructive step. This is a precaution, not a universal manufacturer requirement. If other disks must remain connected, write down their model numbers and capacities and match every field shown in the erase confirmation screen. Pay attention to similarly sized drives, external enclosures, and USB-to-SATA adapters, which can make identification less obvious.
Choose a safe operating environment
Do not erase the active system drive from itself
The drive that is running the current operating system is normally locked or unsuitable as a target. Intel’s documented Secure Erase prerequisites require the SSD to be a non-primary drive. Shut down, connect the SSD to another supported computer as a secondary drive, or use a manufacturer-supported bootable environment.

A bootable method may be required when the SSD is the computer’s original system disk. Follow the maker’s current compatibility instructions for creating and starting that environment; do not infer that a generic boot image supports every model. If you create boot media, use the image and procedure supplied by the manufacturer rather than an unverified download. A spare USB flash drive can be useful for this purpose, but the maker’s instructions determine whether that method is supported.
Check connection and firmware conditions
Use the connection type and driver specified by the manufacturer. BIOS storage mode, firmware, controller state, and security settings can change which commands are exposed. Samsung’s Magician 8.0.0 guide, for example, warns that its Linux bootable solution can have compatibility problems, requires AHCI or ATA mode in the described scenario, does not work in SATA IDE mode there, and may fail when the BIOS applies Security Freeze Lock. These are version- and setup-specific Samsung notes, not rules for every SSD.
Do not switch a system between IDE, AHCI, or another storage mode casually when another operating-system installation is present. Record the original setting and follow the maker’s recovery instructions if a mode change is explicitly required.
How to run the manufacturer procedure
1. Launch the official utility and verify support
- Install or boot the maker’s documented tool.
- Allow it to rescan storage devices if necessary.
- Select the SSD by exact model, interface, and capacity.
- Confirm that the utility identifies the drive as supported for the intended operation.
If the model is listed but the erase control is unavailable, stop. Detection alone does not establish support for Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, or PSID Revert.
2. Select the documented operation
Choose the operation named in the instructions for your model: Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, or PSID Revert. Read the explanatory text beside each choice. Do not treat the labels as universal synonyms. A utility may display several choices while limiting some to particular firmware versions or product categories.
3. Match the method to the data requirement
- User-data erase: an operation identified by the tool as erasing user data.
- Crypto erase: an operation that invalidates or changes encryption material so previously stored data cannot be decrypted through normal means.
- Vendor-defined sanitize: a manufacturer-specific process whose scope and validation must be read in that maker’s documentation.
For Intel NVMe tools, the documented format-property meanings are 0 = No Secure Erase, 1 = User data erase, and 2 = Crypto erase. Select only a value the exact drive and current instructions support. If your organization requires a documented sanitization method, record which value or vendor mode was selected and why it matches the applicable policy.
4. Pass the final confirmation carefully
- Compare the displayed model and capacity with the label or your written inventory.
- Confirm that the target is not the disk containing the running operating system.
- Enter any required confirmation text, password, or PSID exactly as shown on the drive label.
- Start the operation only after verifying that the backup is complete.
PSID Revert is especially destructive: Samsung states that it deletes all data. Treat a PSID printed on a different drive as a reason to cancel, not as something to guess. Do not photograph or copy a PSID into a command until you have matched the label to the selected model.

5. Let the process finish
Do not disconnect power, close the utility, reset the computer, or put the system to sleep while the command is running unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to do so. The available guidance does not establish a universal erase time or consumer success-rate statistic, so do not use an expected duration from another model as a failure threshold.

Intel Memory and Storage Tool workflow
Intel’s documented GUI path is the appropriate choice for ordinary users who have a supported Intel NVMe SSD:
- Install the Intel Memory and Storage Tool and its required Intel NVMe driver.
- Ensure the target has no partitions.
- Ensure it is not the primary system drive.
- Open the tool, select the target Intel NVMe SSD, and choose Secure Erase.
- Read and accept the warning only after checking the model and capacity.
- Wait for the completion result and follow Intel’s instructions for any subsequent initialization.
The documented prerequisites are limited to Intel NVMe SSDs, a partition-free target, a non-primary drive, and the Intel NVMe driver. Intel also documents a command-line path, but use it only when following Intel’s exact command syntax and device-selection instructions; the GUI reduces the risk of applying a command to the wrong disk. If the target still contains partitions, remove them only as Intel’s instructions direct; do not improvise with a different disk utility.
Samsung Magician and PSID Revert considerations
Samsung Magician lists Secure Erase and PSID Revert among its functions. Feature availability depends on the drive and product category, so verify the exact model before relying on either option.
PSID Revert requires the PSID printed on the drive label. It is not a normal reformat and is not a reversible troubleshooting step: Samsung’s documentation says all data is deleted. The bootable Linux guidance in the Magician 8.0.0 installation guide includes AHCI or ATA requirements in the described setup, incompatibility with SATA IDE mode in that scenario, and possible failure caused by BIOS Security Freeze Lock. Because those details are tied to an older guide and particular configurations, consult the current model-specific instructions before creating boot media or changing BIOS settings.
If the SSD is missing, frozen, or the option is disabled
The drive does not appear
- Power down and reseat the SATA cable, adapter, or NVMe module.
- Check whether the connection method is supported by the manufacturer’s utility.
- Confirm the BIOS or operating system sees the exact model.
- Install the required vendor driver or utility version.
The erase control is unavailable
Recheck model support, interface type, firmware, partition state, and whether the SSD is the boot disk. A detected drive can still lack support for a particular operation. Do not guess a command or force an unrelated utility; consult the exact model’s current instructions.
The tool reports a freeze or security lock
Some firmware and BIOS configurations prevent destructive commands while the device is in a security-frozen state. Follow the manufacturer’s documented procedure for that condition. Samsung’s older guide specifically identifies BIOS Security Freeze Lock as a possible cause for its bootable process failing. Do not change BIOS storage modes casually on a system that contains another operating-system installation.

The operation stops or reports an error
Record the exact error text, utility version, firmware version, connection type, and whether the drive was secondary or booted externally. Reboot only as the manufacturer directs, then check the model-specific support instructions. There is no single workaround that applies to every SSD controller. If the device disappears after an interrupted operation, preserve the error details before trying another utility or changing firmware.
After a successful erase
Wait for the utility’s completion message. Then use the manufacturer’s instructions to initialize, partition, or reinstall an operating system if the SSD is being reused. A drive may appear unallocated or uninitialized after sanitization; that state does not mean you should immediately run a random repair command.

For an organization, record the drive identity, selected operation, utility and firmware versions, operator, date, completion status, and any required validation evidence. NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 places sanitization decisions in the context of information sensitivity and the effort an attacker might apply, so follow the policy that governs the data rather than relying solely on a consumer utility’s success message.
For ordinary resale or return data, the manufacturer’s documented operation is generally the relevant practical step. For regulated or highly sensitive information, a completed utility message may need to be supplemented by the organization’s approved validation and recordkeeping process. The correct level of evidence depends on the policy and sensitivity classification, not simply on whether the drive looks empty in an operating system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between available methods
| Decision | Prefer this when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer Secure Erase | The exact SSD model is supported and the maker documents the function. | The label may not reveal whether the implementation is user-data, crypto, or another vendor-defined method. |
| Manufacturer Sanitize | The model’s instructions specify Sanitize as the appropriate operation for the data and lifecycle. | Availability and behavior vary by controller, firmware, and utility version. |
| NVMe Format with secure-erase setting | A supported NVMe tool documents the setting and its meaning for the target. | Setting values must not be generalized to unsupported drives. |
| PSID Revert | The manufacturer instructs you to reset that exact self-encrypting drive and you have its printed PSID. | It deletes all data and requires accurate label entry. |
| Bootable vendor environment | The SSD is the current system disk or the desktop utility cannot safely detach it. | Boot compatibility, BIOS mode, and freeze-lock behavior must be checked for the model and tool version. |
When comparing two available choices, evaluate four questions: Is the exact model and interface supported? Does the operation perform a user-data erase, crypto erase, or another vendor-defined process? Can the drive be attached as a secondary device, or does it need an external boot environment? Finally, does the data’s sensitivity or your organization’s policy require documented validation? These questions are more useful than choosing the option with the most reassuring label.
Practical checklist
- Backups and recovery information verified.
- Exact model, capacity, and SATA or NVMe interface recorded.
- Official, current manufacturer utility and instructions obtained.
- Other storage disconnected where practical.
- Target confirmed as the intended disk and not the active system drive.
- Supported secondary-drive or bootable environment prepared.
- Operation name and erase type understood.
- PSID copied from the correct label if PSID Revert is required.
- Final warning read before confirmation.
- Completion recorded and post-erase initialization performed only from the maker’s instructions.
- Organizational validation and documentation completed when policy requires it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a quick format enough before selling an SSD?
Do not assume so. A quick format primarily changes filesystem information and is not automatically a drive-level sanitization method. Use the manufacturer’s documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, or equivalent operation, then follow any policy that applies to the data’s sensitivity.
Can I erase the SSD that is running Windows or another operating system?
Usually not from that same installation. Intel’s documented prerequisites require the target to be a non-primary drive. Attach it to a supported computer as a secondary drive or use the manufacturer’s supported bootable environment, following the exact compatibility instructions.

What if the maker’s utility detects my SSD but does not show Secure Erase?
Detection does not prove that every feature is supported. Recheck the exact model, interface, firmware, partition state, and whether the drive is the boot disk. If the control remains unavailable, stop and consult the current model-specific instructions instead of forcing a guessed command.
What is the difference between Secure Erase, Sanitize, and PSID Revert?
They are not universal synonyms. Secure Erase and Sanitize are vendor- or standard-defined operations whose scope must be checked for the model. PSID Revert uses the Physical Security ID printed on the drive and, according to Samsung, deletes all data. Read the maker’s definition before selecting one.
Do Intel’s NVMe secure-erase values apply to every SSD?
No. Intel documents values of 0 for no secure erase, 1 for user-data erase, and 2 for crypto erase in its NVMe format instructions. Those meanings should not be generalized to unsupported drives or unrelated utilities. Use the value documented for the exact target.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does a bootable Samsung erase environment fail?
Samsung’s Magician 8.0.0 guide lists setup-specific issues, including required AHCI or ATA mode in the described scenario, incompatibility with SATA IDE mode there, and possible BIOS Security Freeze Lock failures. These are not universal rules. Check the current guide for your model and version.
How should an organization document an SSD sanitization?
Record the drive identity, model and capacity, selected operation, utility and firmware versions, operator, date, completion result, and any required validation evidence. NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 ties sanitization decisions to information sensitivity and the effort an attacker might apply, so follow the governing policy.
Is there a standard amount of time an SSD erase should take?
No universal time is established by the cited manufacturer guidance. Duration can vary with the drive, connection, firmware, and operation. Do not declare failure solely because another model finished faster; wait for the utility’s result or follow its documented error procedure.
The Bottom Line
Back up first, identify the exact SSD, and use the manufacturer’s current supported erase or sanitize procedure in a secondary or bootable environment. Verify the final warning, understand whether the operation is user-data, crypto, or vendor-defined, and document the result when your policy requires it.
