Android phones do not share one universal Calculator app. Google documents unit and currency conversion in Google Search, while a Google Pixel Community answer dated August 16, 2025 says the stock Pixel Calculator has no converter. Check the app on your particular phone instead of assuming that an Android calculator includes this feature.

Convert units or currency in the iPhone Calculator
Apple’s current iPhone instructions place conversions inside the Calculator app. The feature is available from the Calculator mode control, alongside the basic and scientific calculator modes. The exact icon appearance can vary with the iOS version, but the function is labeled as Convert.

1. Open Calculator and turn on Convert
- Open the Calculator app.
- Use the mode control at the top of the calculator and turn on Convert. Apple describes this as changing the calculator mode while in either basic or scientific mode.
Once Convert is enabled, the calculator shows two value fields rather than a single arithmetic display. One field is the unit or currency you are starting with; the other is the destination.

2. Choose the source and destination
- Tap the Unit control.
- Select the category you need, such as length, weight, or currency.
- Choose the unit or currency for the first field.
- Choose the destination unit or currency for the second field.
Apple’s guide also mentions categories including Speed, Time, and Weight and says additional categories are available. It does not provide a complete inventory in the cited instructions, so the choices visible on your phone are the authoritative list for that iOS version.
3. Enter a value in either field
Type a number into either field. The other field updates as you type. You can therefore start with the quantity and unit you know, or begin with the destination field when that is more convenient. For example, select a length unit in one field and another length unit in the second, then enter the measurement you want to convert. The calculator displays the paired value without requiring a separate equals button.
The same process applies to currencies: select the currency you are converting from, select the currency you want to see, and enter the amount. Treat the displayed amount as a conversion estimate rather than a promise of what a bank, card network, exchange desk, or merchant will settle.

Tap Swap Units when you need the opposite direction. The source and destination choices exchange places, so the number you enter is interpreted in the reverse unit order. This is faster and less error-prone than opening both selectors again.

5. Find less-common categories
If the category you need is not immediately visible, swipe the category row to reveal more choices. Apple specifically describes swiping this row to reach categories such as Speed, Time, and Weight. Do not infer that every possible scientific or regional unit is supported; use the categories and units actually offered by your device.
Conversions in Math Notes
Apple also says that units and currencies can be converted in Math Notes. A note such as 50 m in feet = can be used as a conversion expression. This is useful when you want to keep the expression with other notes or calculations, while the Calculator app’s Convert mode is the more direct option for repeatedly switching between two fields.
How conversion works on Android phones
There is no single Calculator app shared by all Android manufacturers. Menus and capabilities can differ by phone model, Android release, and calculator app. A converter present on one handset may be absent on another.
Use Google Search’s documented converter
Google’s official Search Help instructions put the converter in the Google Search box, not in a universal Android Calculator feature.

- Open the Google Search app, a browser search box, or another entry point that sends a query to Google Search.
- Enter the conversion directly, such as a quantity followed by the source and destination units or currencies, or search for Unit converter.
- Use the converter controls that appear to select the measurement category, source, and destination.
- Enter or edit the value to obtain the corresponding result.
Google’s documentation covers measurement categories and currencies. Because this method is a Search feature, it is separate from whatever Calculator app your phone ships with and normally depends on an internet-connected lookup.
Pixel Calculator does not necessarily include a converter
A Google Pixel Community answer dated August 16, 2025 reports that the stock Pixel Calculator does not have a converter. That is Pixel-specific community guidance, not a statement about every Android manufacturer, every Pixel software release, or future versions of the app. On a Pixel, use Google Search for the documented conversion workflow unless your installed Calculator version clearly offers another option.
Check another Android calculator without assuming
On a non-Pixel Android phone, open the installed Calculator and look for a mode menu, a conversion icon, or a menu item named Convert. If none appears, use Google Search or the conversion feature supplied by that manufacturer. Do not assume that an Android phone has the same controls as an iPhone or as another Android model.

Choosing the quickest method
When you have an iPhone
Use Calculator’s Convert mode when you want the conversion in the same app where you perform calculations. It is especially convenient for switching between two selected units, entering values in either direction, or using Swap Units for repeated checks. Use Math Notes when the conversion needs to remain alongside written calculations or notes.

When you have an Android phone
First check whether your own Calculator offers a converter. If it does not, enter the conversion in Google Search. On a Pixel, the August 16, 2025 community guidance specifically points away from the stock Calculator and toward a separate method such as Search.
When you need an uncommon unit
Look through the category and unit selectors rather than relying on a remembered list. Apple’s guide says additional categories exist but does not enumerate every one, and Android availability depends on the Search interface or the particular calculator app. If the desired unit is not offered, use another authoritative conversion source rather than substituting a superficially similar unit.

A phone conversion display can answer “approximately how much is this amount in another currency?” It does not, by itself, establish the amount you will receive or pay in an actual exchange.
The Apple instructions reviewed for Calculator do not identify the currency-data provider, refresh frequency, or offline behavior. They also do not state that bank, card, exchange-house, or merchant fees are included. Google’s Search documentation explains how to access its converter but does not turn a displayed result into a guaranteed transaction rate.
For a purchase, withdrawal, transfer, or currency exchange, confirm all of the following with the provider handling the transaction:
- The rate that will apply at the time the transaction is authorized or settled.
- Any spread, commission, service charge, ATM fee, or card fee.
- Whether the provider uses a different rate for cash, card payments, transfers, or refunds.
- The final amount and currency shown on the provider’s confirmation.
Use the phone calculator for planning, budgeting, and a quick sense of scale. Use the bank, card issuer, exchange service, or merchant confirmation for the amount that actually matters financially.
Common problems and practical fixes
There is no Convert button on an iPhone
- Open the Calculator app itself and check the mode control; Convert is a calculator mode, not a setting in the general iPhone Settings app.
- Make sure you are looking at the current basic or scientific Calculator interface, where Apple places the mode control.
- If the control or its appearance differs, follow the label and icons shown by your installed iOS version. Apple’s instructions describe the function, while the exact visual design can vary.
The category or unit is missing
- Swipe the category row to reveal additional categories on iPhone.
- Confirm that you selected the intended category before searching through its units; length, weight, speed, time, and currency are separate groups.
- On Android, try Google Search’s Unit converter if the installed Calculator does not list the required unit.
- Do not silently replace a missing unit with a nearby but different measurement. Convert through a recognized equivalent only when you understand the distinction.
The number appears backwards
Check which field is the source and which is the destination. On iPhone, tap Swap Units to exchange them. In Google Search, recheck the order of the units or currencies in the query and in the converter controls.
The result does not appear in Google Search
- Search for Unit converter instead of relying on a sentence-style query.
- Check that the phone has a working internet connection, since the method is provided through Search.
- Use explicit unit names or currency codes where the interface permits them, then verify that the displayed source and destination match your intent.
A Pixel Calculator lacks conversion controls
That behavior is consistent with the Pixel Community answer dated August 16, 2025, which reports no converter in the stock Pixel Calculator. Use Google Search’s converter or check whether a later version of your installed app has changed. Do not treat the absence as evidence that every Android calculator works the same way.
A reliable routine for everyday conversions
- Identify the direction. Write down what the number currently represents and what you need to know. For example, start with a length in meters and decide whether the answer should be in feet.
- Pick the method that matches your phone. Use iPhone Calculator Convert when available; use Google Search when your Android Calculator lacks the feature.
- Select both sides before typing. This prevents a familiar unit or currency from being mistaken for the destination.
- Enter the value and inspect the labels. Make sure the result’s unit or currency is the one you intended, not merely a plausible-looking number.
- Reverse-check when the decision is important. On iPhone, use Swap Units and see whether converting back is consistent with the original quantity, allowing for ordinary rounding shown by the interface.
- For money, confirm externally. Before paying, exchanging, or transferring funds, compare the calculator estimate with the provider’s stated rate and fees.
What these phone converters can and cannot tell you
They are designed for fast, readable conversions: choose two representations of a quantity, enter a value, and view the paired result. The iPhone workflow keeps that operation inside Calculator, while Google’s documented Android path places it in Search.
They do not prove that every phone has the same feature, that every unit is available, or that a currency result equals a transaction amount. App version, device, category availability, connection status, data source, update timing, and provider charges all affect what the number means. Treat the labels and context as part of the result, not as decoration.
