How to Use Your Phone as a Wi-Fi Hotspot—and When You Need an App

You usually don’t need an app to turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot. iPhone and Android both have built-in controls that share the phone’s cellular data with other devices. Turn the feature on in your phone’s settings, connect your laptop or tablet to its Wi-Fi name, and check that your carrier plan allows tethering before you rely on it.

What a phone hotspot does

A phone hotspot lets other devices use the phone’s mobile-data connection. On iPhone, Apple calls this feature Personal Hotspot; Android labels it Hotspot or hotspot and tethering. The phone is sharing cellular internet, not acting as a router that repeats a Wi-Fi network it has joined. Apple specifically says an iPhone can only share its cellular internet connection through Personal Hotspot.

Both platforms also document Bluetooth and wired tethering. Wi-Fi is usually the simplest way to connect a laptop or tablet; Bluetooth or a cable can be useful when supported by both devices.

Check your plan before switching it on

Hotspot availability and cost depend on the carrier and plan. Apple notes that Personal Hotspot is not available with all carriers and that additional fees may apply. Google similarly warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Check your plan’s hotspot allowance and terms with your carrier; there is no universal carrier price or allowance that applies to everyone.

Because the hotspot shares mobile data, connected devices may use your cellular allowance. Keep an eye on usage, especially when a computer is downloading updates, syncing files, or streaming video.

Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone

  1. Open Settings. Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot. Depending on your iOS settings layout, you may also find it through the Cellular section.
  2. Set or check the Wi-Fi password. Use a password so nearby people cannot join without permission.
  3. Enable connections. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  4. Connect the other device. On that device, open its Wi-Fi settings, select your iPhone’s network name, and enter the password. Bluetooth or a cable may also work when the devices support that connection method.

If Personal Hotspot does not appear while Cellular Data is on, Apple advises contacting your carrier to ask whether the feature can be added to your plan. Apple also offers Instant Hotspot: nearby devices on the same Apple Account, or eligible family members through Family Sharing, may be able to connect without entering the password manually.

Turn on a Wi-Fi hotspot on Android

  1. Open the hotspot control. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot. If the tile is not visible, open the phone’s Settings and look for hotspot or hotspot and tethering; menu names vary by device.
  2. Check the network name and password. In hotspot settings, view or change the details other devices will use to join.
  3. Connect your laptop, tablet, or other device. Open its Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot name, and enter the password.

Choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a cable

Connection method What to know
Wi-Fi hotspot Connect from the other device’s Wi-Fi settings using the phone’s hotspot name and password. Both Apple and Google document this option.
Bluetooth tethering Both platform guides document Bluetooth tethering. Follow the pairing and tethering controls on the phone and connecting device; support and steps depend on the devices.
USB or cable tethering Apple and Google document wired connections. The phone, computer, and cable must be compatible. Google notes that Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB in its documented setup.

For wired tethering, use a compatible phone-to-computer cable; the right connector depends on the phone and computer.

Do you need a third-party hotspot app?

For ordinary phone-to-device sharing, start with the built-in settings. Apple and Google document native hotspot controls, so a separate app is not needed for the standard setup. An app should not be assumed to bypass a carrier’s tethering terms or enable cellular hotspot sharing when the plan or phone does not support it.

Android’s platform documentation describes Soft AP controls whose availability depends on device capabilities, and some APIs are restricted to system-level use. That makes app behavior device-specific; it does not establish that ordinary third-party apps can replace the system hotspot controls on every Android phone.

On iPhone, Apple’s developer documentation for configuring a device to join a Wi-Fi hotspot concerns joining a network, not creating or managing the iPhone’s cellular Personal Hotspot as a replacement for Settings.

Keep the connection secure and manageable

  • Use a password. Check the hotspot password before sharing it, and change it if you no longer want previous guests to reconnect.
  • Watch data use. A connected computer may consume mobile data through background activity as well as deliberate browsing or streaming.
  • Plan for power. Tethering can use phone battery. Google recommends plugging in while tethering and turning the feature off when it is no longer needed; the cited platform guidance does not establish a universal battery-runtime figure.
  • Check who can join. Review connected devices in your phone’s hotspot settings when available, and disable the hotspot when you do not need it.
