How to Use Your Phone as a Hotspot When Home Internet Is Down

If your home broadband is offline, your phone can share its cellular data connection with a laptop, tablet, or another device. Turn on the phone’s hotspot, select it in the other device’s Wi-Fi settings, and enter the hotspot password. This works only when the phone has usable cellular data and your carrier and plan allow tethering; it does not repair or replace the home broadband service.

Check those two conditions first, then follow the instructions for your phone. Wi-Fi is usually the simplest setup, while USB and Bluetooth are official alternatives when Wi-Fi discovery or connection is inconvenient.

What using a phone as a hotspot actually does

A hotspot makes the phone act as a small, temporary internet gateway. The phone receives data over its mobile network and shares that connection with other devices. Apple describes Personal Hotspot as using an iPhone’s mobile-data connection to create a temporary portable Wi-Fi network that other devices can use to reach the internet (Apple Support).

Every webpage, video, download, software update, and cloud sync made by a connected device travels through the phone’s mobile plan. The phone therefore needs cellular service at the location where you are trying to work. A phone that shows no usable mobile data cannot provide internet access merely because its hotspot switch is turned on.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The arrangement is independent of your failed router or broadband modem. You can leave the home Wi-Fi equipment powered off while you work through the phone, but the hotspot will stop providing internet if the phone loses cellular coverage, runs out of permitted hotspot data, or is switched off.

Check these things before enabling the hotspot

  • Cellular data: Open a webpage on the phone itself with Wi-Fi disabled. If the phone cannot load it, troubleshoot mobile service before troubleshooting the hotspot.
  • Plan eligibility: Hotspot access is carrier- and plan-specific. It may be blocked, assigned a separate allowance, or subject to an additional fee. Apple advises contacting the carrier if Personal Hotspot is unavailable, and Google advises checking with the carrier for Android availability.
  • Data headroom: A computer can consume mobile data quickly through operating-system updates, photo synchronization, video meetings, and streaming. Pause large background jobs before connecting.
  • Power: Keep the phone connected to a charger or have a charged power bank ready for a long outage. The official instructions do not establish a universal battery-life difference between Wi-Fi, USB, and Bluetooth tethering, so plan for the phone to need power regardless of method.
  • Device limit: Your carrier may limit how many devices can connect. Do not assume a limit advertised by one provider applies to another.

Set up an iPhone hotspot

Apple’s labels vary slightly by iOS version and carrier configuration. Look for Personal Hotspot directly in Settings, or open Settings > Cellular (sometimes labeled Mobile Service) and then choose Personal Hotspot.

  1. Open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot, or go through Cellular/Mobile Service > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  3. Read the Wi-Fi Password shown on that screen. If you change it, Apple requires a password of at least eight characters.
  4. Leave the Personal Hotspot screen available while connecting if the other device does not immediately see the network.
  5. On the computer, tablet, or other device, open its Wi-Fi list, select the iPhone’s name, and enter the password from the iPhone.

After authentication, the connected device should show the iPhone as its Wi-Fi network. Internet traffic now uses the iPhone’s mobile data rather than the unavailable home connection.

If Personal Hotspot is missing on the iPhone

First confirm that Cellular Data is enabled and that the phone can browse without Wi-Fi. If the Personal Hotspot option still does not appear, Apple says to contact the carrier about adding the feature to the plan. Not all carriers support it, and additional fees may apply (Apple Support).

Use an iPhone with a computer over USB

A wired connection can be useful when the computer cannot find the Wi-Fi network or when you want to avoid entering a wireless password. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable, then enable Personal Hotspot as described above. Use a cable that supports data transfer; some cables are intended only for charging.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For USB tethering to Windows, Apple says to install the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows. Windows may also ask you to approve the accessory on the iPhone and tap Trust for the computer. If the phone is charging but Windows does not obtain a network connection, check the app or iTunes installation, reconnect the cable, and respond to any trust prompt.

Pair an iPhone by Bluetooth

Apple also documents Bluetooth tethering. Turn on Personal Hotspot, pair the iPhone and the receiving computer or tablet in their Bluetooth settings, and select the iPhone as the device’s network connection. Both devices must support the required Bluetooth networking features. Bluetooth is an alternative, not a requirement; use Wi-Fi when it is available and easier.

Set up a Pixel or other Android phone

On a Pixel, Google documents this path: Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Open that screen, enable the Wi-Fi hotspot, review or change the network name and password, and then join it from the other device’s Wi-Fi settings (Google Pixel Phone Help).

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Choose Hotspot & tethering.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi hotspot.
  5. Switch the hotspot on and note the displayed network name and password.
  6. On the receiving device, open Wi-Fi, select that network, and enter the password.

Android manufacturers use different menu names and may move the controls. Search Settings for hotspot or tethering if the Pixel path does not match your phone. A carrier can also hide or restrict the feature, so check the carrier’s support information rather than assuming every Android phone has identical options.

Android USB and Bluetooth options

Many Android phones expose USB tethering and Bluetooth tethering under the same Hotspot & tethering menu. Connect the phone to the computer with a data-capable USB cable before enabling USB tethering. For Bluetooth, pair the devices first, then enable Bluetooth tethering and select the phone’s network connection on the computer.

Google Fi’s help documentation lists Wi-Fi hotspot, USB, and Bluetooth sharing for its phones (Google Fi Help). Google Fi also states that tethering uses the Flexible plan’s data budget and that its phones can share with up to 10 devices. That allowance and device count apply to that provider’s terms; they are not a universal Android rule.

Connect the device that needs internet

Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, tablets, and game devices

  1. Open the receiving device’s network or Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Find the phone’s hotspot name. On an iPhone, this is normally the iPhone’s device name; on Android, it is the configured hotspot name.
  3. Select the network and enter the exact password shown on the phone. Passwords are case-sensitive.
  4. Wait for the device to show a connected status, then open a simple webpage to verify internet access.
  5. If the page does not load, test the phone itself with Wi-Fi disabled before changing settings on the receiving device.

If several devices need access, connect them one at a time. Stop devices that are not needed, because each one can consume the phone plan’s data allowance through background activity.

Choose Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth

Method Practical setup Cable needed Receiving-device considerations Carrier and plan considerations
Wi-Fi hotspot Enable the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot, select its network on the other device, and enter the password. No. The device must support Wi-Fi and be able to discover and join the hotspot network. Hotspot eligibility, data limits, fees, and device limits are set by the carrier and plan.
USB tethering Connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, enable USB tethering or Personal Hotspot, and approve trust or accessory prompts. Yes; a compatible data cable. The computer must support the phone’s USB networking. Windows use with an iPhone may require the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes. The same carrier hotspot rules apply because the phone’s mobile data is still being shared.
Bluetooth tethering Pair the phone and receiving device, enable Bluetooth tethering, and select the phone’s network connection. No. Both devices must support Bluetooth networking and remain paired. Carrier eligibility and mobile-data charges still apply.

Official Apple and Google instructions document all three approaches, but they do not provide a sound universal ranking for speed, battery life, or security. Results vary with phone hardware, cellular conditions, software, and the receiving device. Choose the method that your devices support and that you can set up reliably.

Understand carrier, plan, and data rules

“Unlimited data” on a phone plan does not necessarily mean unlimited hotspot data. A carrier may provide no tethering, a separate hotspot allowance, reduced service after an allowance, a paid add-on, or a limit on connected devices. Apple explicitly notes that Personal Hotspot is unavailable with some carriers and that additional fees may apply (Apple Support).

Read the hotspot section of your plan’s current terms or contact the carrier before relying on it for a prolonged outage. Ask specifically:

  • Is hotspot or tethering enabled on this exact line and plan?
  • Is the allowance separate from ordinary on-device mobile data?
  • What happens after the allowance is used?
  • Are there charges for adding or using the feature?
  • How many devices may connect at one time?
  • Are there country, roaming, or account restrictions?

Google Fi is a concrete example of why provider terms must be checked: its documentation says tethering data comes from the Flexible plan’s data budget and supports sharing with up to 10 devices. Do not apply those details to another carrier.

Troubleshoot a hotspot that will not work

The phone has no internet connection

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone and open a webpage. This tests cellular data directly.
  2. Confirm mobile data is enabled and that the phone shows usable cellular service.
  3. Move to a location with better reception if possible.
  4. Check the carrier account for a data outage, exhausted allowance, roaming restriction, or blocked hotspot feature.

A connected laptop cannot receive internet if the phone itself has no working mobile-data path.

The hotspot option is absent

On iPhone, verify the Cellular Data setting, then contact the carrier if Personal Hotspot remains missing. On Android, search Settings for hotspot or tethering and check the carrier’s eligibility rules. Menu wording differs among manufacturers and software versions, so a missing Pixel-style path does not by itself prove that the phone lacks the feature.

The other device cannot see the Wi-Fi network

Keep the hotspot enabled and remain on the phone’s hotspot settings screen while you refresh the receiving device’s Wi-Fi list. Confirm that the phone has not automatically disabled the hotspot after inactivity. Restart Wi-Fi on the receiving device, then restart both devices if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On iPhone, Apple recommends updating both devices and restarting them. Apple also suggests trying Maximize Compatibility when a device cannot connect. Apple warns that this setting may reduce performance and Wi-Fi security, so use it as a compatibility test rather than leaving it enabled without a reason (Apple Support).

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

The password is rejected

Read the password directly from the phone instead of relying on memory. Check capitalization, punctuation, and look-alike characters. On iPhone, changing the Wi-Fi password requires at least eight characters. After changing it, forget the old network on the receiving device and join again with the new password.

Wi-Fi will not work but internet is urgent

Use a supported wired or Bluetooth method if both devices offer it. For iPhone-to-Windows USB tethering, install the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows and approve the accessory and trust prompts. For Android, connect with a data-capable cable before enabling USB tethering. If a cable charges the phone but no network appears, it may be charge-only, damaged, or unsupported for data.

The connection drops during work

  • Keep the phone where it receives the strongest practical cellular signal.
  • Connect the phone to power for a long session.
  • Reduce the number of connected devices.
  • Pause cloud backup, operating-system updates, game downloads, and high-resolution streaming on the receiving device.
  • Check whether the carrier has reached a hotspot allowance or imposed a post-allowance restriction.

Reduce surprise data use during the outage

Before opening bandwidth-heavy applications, set the receiving device’s connection as metered if that option exists. Disable automatic updates and pause cloud-drive synchronization temporarily. Prefer documents, email, and low-bandwidth webpages over video streaming. Restore normal update and sync settings after home service returns so you do not leave important maintenance disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one task needs access, connect one device and disconnect it when finished. A phone’s hotspot can remain visible while unused devices continue background requests, so check the phone’s connected-device list and remove anything unnecessary.

Protect the temporary network

Use a non-obvious hotspot password and share it only with people who need access. Do not publish the password or leave an unneeded hotspot running in a public place. When the outage workaround is over, turn off Personal Hotspot or Wi-Fi hotspot. Apple specifically recommends turning it off when it is no longer needed to avoid unnecessary data charges (Apple Support).

If you enabled a compatibility mode to solve a connection problem, turn it back off after testing unless you still need it. Keep the phone’s operating system and the receiving device updated when practical; Apple includes software updates and restarts among its connection troubleshooting steps.

When home internet comes back

  1. Reconnect the computer, tablet, and other devices to the normal home Wi-Fi network or wired network.
  2. Turn off the phone hotspot.
  3. Resume paused updates, cloud synchronization, and backups.
  4. Check the phone’s carrier account if the outage caused unexpected hotspot usage or charges.

The phone hotspot is an emergency connection that bridges a broadband outage; it does not restore the home router, modem, or fixed-line service. If the home connection remains unavailable, report the fault to the broadband provider while continuing to use the phone only within your carrier’s data and tethering terms.
