What “handheld PC gaming” on a phone actually means
A phone does not normally execute the demanding PC game in this arrangement. Your gaming computer renders the game, encodes its video and audio, and sends that stream across your network. The phone decodes the stream and shows it on its screen while returning button, stick, mouse, keyboard or touch input to the PC.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat division explains both the appeal and the limitations. You can use the games, saves and graphics settings available on your computer without buying a second handheld PC. However, the experience depends on the host computer being powered on and able to run the game, the network carrying a responsive two-way stream, and the phone or controller accepting the required inputs.

Choose the streaming route
| Approach | Best fit | Host requirement | Controller and OS notes | Network and service considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Games already in your Steam library and the quickest setup | Steam installed and running on the gaming PC | Official mobile apps provide Android and Apple support paths; check the current store listing for your phone | Begin with the phone and PC on the same home network |
| Moonlight with Sunshine | People who want a configurable client/host arrangement or broader host control | A supported host configured on the PC; Sunshine is the current host path described in Moonlight’s setup guidance | Android-mapped gamepads and common Xbox and PlayStation controllers are documented; iOS/tvOS 13 or later supports listed Xbox One S, PS4 Bluetooth and MFi controllers | Pair locally first, then configure internet access if your network permits it |
| Console remote play | Games installed on a PlayStation or Xbox console | The relevant console, powered and configured for remote play | Phone and controller compatibility depends on the console’s app and current platform support | This is console streaming, not streaming from your PC |
| Cloud gaming | Playing supported games without owning a capable gaming PC or console | A cloud provider’s data center rather than your own PC | Service, phone and controller support varies by region and current plan | Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream to a phone without an Xbox console with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription; launching it from the Backbone App requires Backbone+ according to Backbone’s support material. Verify current terms and regional availability |
Steam Link is the most approachable first attempt when the games are in Steam. Moonlight is a separate client and needs a compatible host configuration. Neither option turns the phone into a self-contained PC; both are remote displays for a computer that remains responsible for running the game.
What you need before setup
A gaming PC that can already run the game
Install the game and confirm it launches normally at the PC. Streaming does not remove the game’s CPU, GPU, memory or storage requirements. Leave the computer available during play, and configure its power settings so it does not sleep or shut down while you are away from the desk.
An iPhone or Android phone
Install the client from the appropriate app store. Valve documents Android support for Steam Link on Android 5.0 and newer and maintains a separate Apple Steam Link support path. App availability and minimum operating-system requirements can change, so check the current listing for the exact phone before installing.
A network that can carry the stream
Moonlight recommends a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connection to the phone. It also recommends connecting the host PC to the router by Ethernet where possible. These are practical recommendations, not a promise of a particular frame rate, latency or image quality; walls, interference, router load and the game’s motion can still affect the result.

Optional physical controls
Touch controls are available only where the client or game provides a usable layout. A USB-C phone game controller, telescopic mobile controller or separate Bluetooth gamepad gives a more familiar handheld arrangement. Check the phone’s connector, whether a case must be removed, the controller’s device clearance and current OS support before buying.
Set up Steam Link on a phone
This is the straightforward route for a Steam library. Keep the gaming PC and phone on the same home network for the first connection.
- Install Steam on the PC. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games and leave Steam running.
- Install Steam Link on the phone. Use the current Android or Apple app-store listing and confirm that the phone meets its stated OS requirement.
- Open Steam Link and start its pairing flow. The app searches for a Steam host on the local network. Select the computer that appears.
- Confirm the pairing code on the PC. Follow the on-screen prompt in Steam. If the computer is not found, verify that both devices are on the same network rather than one being on a guest Wi-Fi network or cellular data.
- Run the connection test. Let Steam Link complete its test before launching a game. A poor result usually points to Wi-Fi placement, congestion or the PC’s link to the router rather than to the game itself.
- Open the Steam library from the phone. Choose a game that is installed on the host and start it. The PC renders the game while the phone displays the stream.
- Adjust controls and streaming options only after the first launch works. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether a visual or input problem comes from the game, the controller or the network.
Steam Link is tied to the Steam environment. A game installed outside Steam may require adding it to Steam as a non-Steam game, and compatibility can vary by title; do not assume every launcher or anti-cheat system behaves identically when streamed.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine
Moonlight is a client. It needs a supported host on the gaming PC; current setup guidance centers on Sunshine. This route is useful when you want more control over the host and client arrangement, but it has more pieces to configure than Steam Link.

- Install Moonlight on the phone. Choose the current Android or Apple-compatible version for your device.
- Install and configure a supported host on the PC. Use Sunshine as the host path described in Moonlight’s current setup guidance. Confirm that the host can see the games or applications you intend to launch.
- Put both devices on the same home network. Moonlight recommends completing the first pairing locally before attempting internet play.
- Open Moonlight and select the discovered PC. The client displays a pairing PIN.
- Enter that PIN on the host PC. Approve the pairing in Sunshine or the host interface, then wait for Moonlight to show the available games or desktop entry.
- Launch a test game or application. Check video, sound and input locally. A short test catches host and controller problems before router configuration makes troubleshooting harder.
- Only then consider internet access. Sunshine documents a UPnP option that can request automatic port forwarding. If your router, carrier-grade NAT, firewall or public network blocks that method, another network configuration may be required, and some networks will not support a reliable incoming connection.
Moonlight’s living documentation includes older host approaches in places as well as current Sunshine guidance. Follow the current host instructions for your operating system rather than mixing settings from different generations of host software.
Connect a controller
Bluetooth gamepads
Moonlight documents standard Android-mapped gamepads and support for common Xbox and PlayStation controllers. For iOS and tvOS 13 or later, its guide lists Xbox One S and PS4 Bluetooth controllers and MFi controllers. The exact phone, operating-system version and controller firmware combination still matters.
- Put the controller into its Bluetooth-pairing mode.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
- Wait until the phone reports the controller as connected.
- Open Steam Link or Moonlight and test every stick, trigger, shoulder button and menu button.
- If a game uses an unexpected layout, check the client’s controller mapping and the game’s own input settings.
Moonlight specifically recommends testing a particular Android device and controller combination. Some Bluetooth pairings can introduce noticeable latency or intermittent disconnections even when the initial pairing succeeds. Re-pairing, updating controller firmware, moving closer to the phone and reducing nearby wireless interference may help, but a different controller or a wired phone-mounted model can be the practical solution.
Phone-mounted and USB-C controllers
A telescopic controller grips the phone and places sticks and buttons on either side, creating the closest handheld feel. USB-C models avoid some Bluetooth delay and do not need a separate battery, but they require the correct connector and enough clearance around the port. Verify whether your phone’s case must be removed and whether the controller supports the phone’s current operating system.

Do not buy solely from a connector name. USB-C phones differ in physical size, port position and case clearance, and an iPhone model may require a different connector or adapter than an Android phone. Check the manufacturer’s fit list for the exact model.
Make the local connection reliable
Use the recommended topology
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet whenever practical.
- Connect the phone to the router’s 5 GHz band rather than a congested 2.4 GHz network when signal strength permits.
- Keep the phone within strong coverage of the access point; a fast router cannot compensate for a weak signal at the play location.
- Avoid guest networks that isolate wireless clients from wired devices.
- Pause large downloads, backups and video streams on the same network while testing.
A Wi-Fi 6 router or a new Ethernet cable is conditional equipment, not a universal requirement. Replace or add networking hardware only when the existing wireless link or PC-to-router connection is the demonstrated weak point.
Change one variable at a time
Start with the client’s default or balanced settings. If the image stutters, first move closer to the access point or wire the PC. If input feels delayed while the picture remains smooth, test the controller locally and then test a different controller connection. If the picture is clear but a particular game fails to launch, investigate that game or launcher rather than immediately replacing the network.
Attempt play away from home only after local play works
Remote play over the internet requires the home network to accept an incoming client connection and requires the phone’s current network to carry the stream in both directions. Hotel, workplace, school and cellular networks may block required traffic or place the phone behind restrictive NAT. A successful home pairing does not guarantee that an away-from-home connection will work.

- Prove that the game launches and the controller works while the phone and PC are at home.
- Enable the host’s supported remote-access method. Sunshine’s UPnP option can request router port forwarding automatically, but the router and internet provider must allow it.
- If automatic forwarding fails, review the host and router documentation for a supported manual method. Do not expose services blindly or disable the firewall without understanding the security impact.
- Test from a different network, such as a trusted mobile connection, while keeping the PC powered on.
- If the connection fails, return to local testing. A failure away from home may be caused by the remote network or NAT rather than by the phone or host software.
Moonlight’s guidance treats same-network pairing as the starting point and, for iOS and tvOS, says local pairing is required under Apple’s guidelines. Plan around that requirement instead of assuming an iPhone can be paired for the first time from an outside network.
Diagnose common problems
The PC does not appear
- Confirm Steam or the Moonlight host is running.
- Check that the phone and PC are on the same home network and not isolated guest networks.
- Temporarily test with the PC connected by Ethernet and the phone near the router.
- Check the operating system firewall and host discovery permissions; do not leave the firewall disabled as a permanent fix.
The stream stutters or drops quality
- Move the phone closer to the access point and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi if the signal is strong enough.
- Wire the gaming PC to the router.
- Stop competing downloads and backups.
- Test at a different time of day to identify local congestion.
- Lower the client’s stream quality or resolution only after improving the physical connection.
Controls are delayed or disconnect
- Test the controller in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and inside the streaming client.
- Reduce distance and interference between phone and Bluetooth controller.
- Update controller firmware where the manufacturer provides that option.
- Try a wired or phone-mounted controller if the Bluetooth pairing remains unreliable.
The game launches but input is wrong
- Check whether the game expects an Xbox-style, PlayStation-style or keyboard-and-mouse layout.
- Review Steam Input or the client’s mapping profile.
- Test the controller in another game to separate a title-specific configuration from a general pairing problem.
Remote access works at home but not elsewhere
Return to the local test, then inspect router NAT, firewall and UPnP status. The outside network may block the required traffic, or the home internet connection may not provide a reachable address. Neither Steam Link nor Moonlight can guarantee compatibility with every public or cellular network.
How this differs from console remote play and cloud gaming
PC streaming, console remote play and cloud gaming can all show a game on a phone, but their requirements are different.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- PC streaming: your own gaming PC runs the title. Steam Link or Moonlight is the phone-facing client.
- Console remote play: the relevant PlayStation or Xbox console must own and run the game. A phone app does not replace that console.
- Cloud gaming: a remote data center runs the game. Backbone’s support material says Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream directly to a phone without an Xbox console with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription; plan names, supported games and regional access can change.
If you already own a capable PC and a Steam library, local PC streaming avoids buying a second game license for the phone. If you do not have a suitable PC, cloud gaming may be the more relevant category, but it introduces a service subscription and availability requirements rather than using your own hardware.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Steam Link when your priority is the shortest path from a Steam library to a phone.
- Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when you want a configurable host/client setup and are comfortable pairing and maintaining host software.
- Choose a physical controller when the game relies on dual sticks, triggers or precise timing; confirm exact phone fit and OS compatibility.
- Improve the network before buying hardware: strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone and Ethernet for the PC are the first recommendations.
- Treat remote internet play as a second phase, not as the initial troubleshooting target.
- Use console remote play or cloud gaming only when their separate console, subscription and regional requirements match your situation.
What to verify before you start a long session
- The PC can run the game normally and will not sleep during play.
- The phone’s current operating system supports the selected app.
- The phone and PC pair successfully on the same home network.
- Video, audio and every controller input work in a short test game.
- The PC-to-router link is wired when possible and the phone has a strong 5 GHz connection.
- Your controller fits the phone, clears its case and remains connected for the duration of a test session.
- If playing away from home, you have tested the host’s remote-access method and understand that the outside network may still block it.
