Turn on your Android phone’s Wi‑Fi hotspot, then select the phone’s hotspot name from the other device’s Wi‑Fi list and enter the displayed password. The phone shares its mobile-data connection, so the host phone needs cellular coverage and a plan that allows tethering. Google’s general Android guidance says a hotspot can support up to 10 other devices, although the exact limit and availability can vary by phone and operator.
Turn on a Wi‑Fi hotspot and connect another device
The standard method works for a laptop, tablet, another phone, or another Wi‑Fi device. Keep the phone with the mobile connection nearby while you complete these steps.

1. Open the hotspot control
- Swipe down from the top of the Android phone’s screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Wi‑Fi Hotspot. The phone begins broadcasting a Wi‑Fi network using its mobile connection.
- If the tile is not visible, tap Edit in Quick Settings and add the Wi‑Fi Hotspot tile. You can also open the Settings app and search for
hotspotortethering; manufacturers place the control in different menus.
The exact wording and location depend on the Android version and the phone maker. For example, an older Samsung manual places it at Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering → Mobile Hotspot. That path is an example of manufacturer variation, not a universal Android menu.

3. Join from the receiving device
- On the laptop, tablet, phone, or other device, open its list of available Wi‑Fi networks.
- Select the Android phone’s hotspot name.
- Enter the hotspot password shown in the phone’s hotspot settings.
- Wait for the receiving device to show that it is connected. Its internet traffic now uses the Android phone’s cellular connection.
Google’s Android Help describes support for up to 10 other devices on a Wi‑Fi hotspot. Treat that as Google’s general documented guidance rather than a guarantee: a particular handset, Android build, or mobile operator may impose a lower limit or disable hotspot access altogether. Google Fi Wireless Help separately describes sharing a Google Fi phone’s portable Wi‑Fi hotspot with up to 10 devices at a time; that figure applies specifically to Google Fi, not automatically to every operator.
Before you start: mobile data, coverage, and operator rules
The phone must have a usable cellular connection
A hotspot shares the phone’s mobile-data connection; it does not create internet access by itself. If the phone has no cellular signal, its mobile data is turned off, or the network is unavailable, a connected laptop or tablet may show the hotspot but still have no internet.
Check mobile data on the host phone before troubleshooting the receiving device. If a web page will not load on the phone itself with Wi‑Fi turned off, tethering cannot provide working internet until the cellular connection is restored.
Check whether your plan permits tethering
Hotspot use is governed by the mobile operator’s terms. Google warns that some operators limit tethering or charge extra for it. Do not assume that every mobile plan includes hotspot data, that hotspot data has the same allowance as ordinary phone data, or that a blocked hotspot can be enabled through an Android setting. Check the current terms for your own plan before relying on the connection, especially for long sessions or multiple devices.
Watch for usage and billing surprises
Every connected device consumes the host phone’s mobile data. A laptop may perform background updates or synchronize files, while a tablet may stream video. Android’s hotspot screen or your operator’s account tools may show usage, but the exact counters and alerts differ by device and plan. If your operator bills hotspot data separately or imposes a hotspot allowance, those rules still apply when several devices share the connection.
Disconnect devices that no longer need access and turn off the hotspot when the session ends. A Wi‑Fi connection to the phone can remain active even when the receiving device is not visibly browsing.
Alternative tethering methods
Android commonly offers Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering. The receiving device must support the chosen method, and each option has a different setup.

| Method | What you need to do | Important limitation documented by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi hotspot | Turn on the phone’s hotspot, then choose its network name and enter its password on the other device. | Operator terms may limit or charge for tethering. Google’s general guidance says up to 10 other devices. |
| Bluetooth tethering | Pair the phone and receiving device over Bluetooth, configure the receiving device to use the Bluetooth network connection, then enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone. | Both devices must support the required Bluetooth networking features; menu names vary. |
| USB tethering | Connect the phone and receiving device with a compatible USB cable, then enable USB tethering in the phone’s tethering settings. | Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers. |
These methods are alternatives, not three ways to combine the same connection. Choose the one that both devices support. A cable must have connectors that fit the particular phone and computer, and Bluetooth requires pairing before the receiving device can use the phone’s network connection.
Bluetooth tethering
- Pair the Android phone with the receiving device in the Bluetooth settings on both devices.
- On the receiving device, choose the paired phone as its network or internet connection using Bluetooth networking options.
- On the Android phone, open the tethering controls and turn on Bluetooth tethering.
The receiving device’s exact network command differs between operating systems. If it can pair but cannot use the phone for internet, confirm that Bluetooth tethering is enabled on the phone and that the receiving device offers a Bluetooth network-connection option.
USB tethering
- Use a USB cable that supports data as well as charging and that has connectors compatible with both devices.
- Connect the Android phone to the receiving device.
- Open the phone’s hotspot or tethering settings and turn on USB tethering.
Google specifically states that Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers. For a Mac, use Wi‑Fi hotspot or another supported connection method instead. A cable that only charges the phone will not provide the data link required for USB tethering.
Automatic and instant connections between Android devices
Newer Android cross-device features can reduce the need to type a hotspot password when two nearby devices are associated with the same Google Account. Availability depends on Android version, phone manufacturer, and the feature settings on both devices.
Cross-device prerequisites
- Both devices should run Android 11 or newer for the documented Cross-device services features.
- More functionality is available on Android 14 and newer.
- Both devices should be signed in to the same Google Account.
- Cross-device services must be enabled on the devices, along with the relevant Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and sharing switches requested by the setup.
- Android Go does not support Cross-device services.
Instant Hotspot
When an eligible nearby Android device has no internet, it may receive a notification offering a connection to another device’s cellular connection. Google also says the other phone may appear under Settings → Network & internet → Internet, although the exact flow varies by Android version and manufacturer.
Google documents Instant Hotspot on Samsung S25 and newer devices. Older Samsung devices can use Auto Hotspot. Samsung devices do not offer Google’s automatic Wi‑Fi sharing feature; Google directs Samsung users to Wi‑Fi Auto Sharing instead. These are manufacturer-specific differences, so an option shown in one Android phone’s menus may not appear on another.
What to check when an instant connection does not appear
- Bring the phones closer together.
- Confirm that the host phone has cellular coverage and mobile data.
- Verify that both phones use the same Google Account.
- Check that Cross-device services and the relevant sharing switches are enabled.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices if the feature requires them.
- If the automatic option remains unavailable, use the ordinary Wi‑Fi hotspot steps instead.
Battery, heat, and finishing a session
Tethering can use significant battery because the phone maintains its cellular connection while also serving another device. Google advises plugging devices in during tethering when practical.

- Connect the phone to a charger before starting a long session.
- Keep the phone where it retains a cellular signal; repeatedly searching for coverage can make a session less reliable.
- Turn the hotspot off as soon as the other devices no longer need it.
- Enable automatic hotspot shutoff when no devices are connected, if that option is available in your phone’s hotspot settings.
Automatic shutoff is useful when you forget to disable the hotspot, but it can interrupt a connection that is temporarily idle. Check whether your phone lets you choose the idle period or simply provides an on/off switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot a missing hotspot or failed connection
The Wi‑Fi Hotspot tile is missing
- Open Quick Settings and tap Edit to look for a hidden Wi‑Fi Hotspot tile.
- Open Settings and search for
hotspotortethering. - Look through the phone maker’s network or connections section. Menu paths differ by Android version and manufacturer.
If no hotspot or tethering control exists anywhere, the phone software or mobile operator may not expose the feature. Check the operator’s terms and the phone’s documentation rather than assuming a missing tile is a temporary error.
The other device cannot see the hotspot name
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi Hotspot is switched on and that the phone has not automatically shut it off.
- Refresh the receiving device’s Wi‑Fi list.
- Move the devices closer together.
- Check that the host phone has cellular signal and mobile data.
- Open hotspot setup to verify the network name being broadcast.
For an Instant Hotspot connection, also verify the same Google Account, Cross-device services, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and sharing settings.
The receiving device rejects the password
- Open the phone’s hotspot setup and read the current password instead of relying on an old saved value.
- On the receiving device, select the hotspot network and choose the option to forget or remove the saved network if it keeps submitting an old password.
- Reconnect and enter the current password carefully.
Changing the hotspot password can disconnect devices that were already using the previous one; reconnect each device with the new credentials.
The device connects but has no internet
- Test mobile data directly on the host phone with Wi‑Fi turned off, if possible.
- Check the phone’s signal and move it to a place with better coverage.
- Confirm that the mobile plan allows tethering and that any hotspot allowance has not been exhausted.
- Turn the hotspot off and on, then reconnect the receiving device.
A Wi‑Fi connection icon on the receiving device only confirms the local link to the phone. It does not prove that the phone has working cellular internet or that the operator is permitting tethered traffic.

- Use a compatible data cable and reconnect it firmly.
- Enable USB tethering only after the phone and receiving device are connected.
- Remember that Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers; choose Wi‑Fi or another supported method for a Mac.
Hotspot use is blocked or unexpectedly charged
Review the current mobile operator terms for your specific plan. Google’s Android guidance warns that operators may restrict tethering or charge extra. If the plan does not include hotspot access, changing the Android network menu will not remove that restriction.
Choosing the right tethering method
Use Wi‑Fi when several ordinary Wi‑Fi devices need to connect without cables and the phone’s plan permits hotspot use. Use Bluetooth when the devices can pair and you prefer a wireless method designed for a compatible setup. Use USB when a direct cable connection fits the devices and you are not connecting to a Mac. The documented guidance does not establish a universal speed, range, or battery ranking among these methods, so choose based on compatibility, available ports, pairing requirements, and your operator’s rules rather than an assumed performance advantage.

Questions readers often ask
Does a hotspot work without mobile data?
No. The hotspot creates a local Wi‑Fi connection to the phone, but the phone still needs cellular coverage and mobile data to provide internet. A device can connect to the hotspot name and still show no internet if the host phone is offline.
How many devices can connect at once?
Google Android Help documents up to 10 other devices for a Wi‑Fi hotspot. Google Fi Wireless Help also gives a limit of up to 10 devices for a Google Fi phone. Your handset or operator may set a lower limit, so treat those figures as documented guidance rather than a guarantee.
Can I use a hotspot on any Android phone?
Android commonly includes Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering, but an operator can restrict or charge for tethering and a manufacturer can place or label the controls differently. Search Settings for “hotspot” or “tethering” and check your plan’s terms.
Why does my laptop connect but say “no internet”?
The laptop may have a working Wi‑Fi link to the phone while the phone lacks cellular coverage, has mobile data disabled, or is blocked from tethering by the operator. Test a web page on the phone with Wi‑Fi turned off, then check signal and plan permissions.
Can I change the hotspot name or password?
Yes. Touch and hold the Hotspot Quick Settings tile to open hotspot setup, where you can inspect or change the network name and password. Devices using the old password may disconnect and must be joined again with the new one.
Why is the hotspot option missing?
First add the tile through Quick Settings’ Edit control, then search Settings for “hotspot” or “tethering.” If there is no control anywhere, the phone software or operator may not expose the feature.

- The receiving device is using the correct hotspot name and current password.
- The devices are close enough for the chosen connection and have the required Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth settings enabled.
- The phone is charging during a long session when practical.
- Automatic hotspot shutoff is enabled if you want the phone to stop broadcasting after all devices disconnect.
- The hotspot is turned off when finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning on a hotspot use my regular mobile data?
Yes. Connected devices use the Android phone’s mobile-data connection. Any operator data allowance, hotspot cap, restriction, or extra charge still applies.
Can I connect more than one device?
Google Android Help says a Wi‑Fi hotspot can support up to 10 other devices. Google Fi Wireless Help gives the same up-to-10 figure for Google Fi phones, but your phone or operator may allow fewer.
What should I do if the hotspot disappears while I am using it?
Check whether automatic hotspot shutoff is enabled when no devices are connected. Also confirm the phone still has cellular coverage and that the hotspot switch remains on.
Is Bluetooth or USB tethering better than Wi‑Fi?
There is no universal ranking established by Google’s guidance. Choose based on device compatibility, whether pairing or a cable is practical, and limitations such as Android USB tethering not working with Mac computers.
Do both phones need the same Google Account for ordinary hotspot use?
No. A normal Wi‑Fi hotspot uses its network name and password. The same Google Account is a prerequisite for the documented Cross-device and Instant Hotspot features.
Why can’t my Samsung phone find Google’s automatic Wi‑Fi sharing option?
Google says automatic Wi‑Fi sharing is not available on Samsung devices and directs Samsung users to Wi‑Fi Auto Sharing. Samsung model and Android version determine which related options appear.
The Bottom Line
To share an Android phone’s internet, enable Wi‑Fi Hotspot, read its network name and password, and join it from the other device’s Wi‑Fi settings. Confirm cellular coverage and tethering permission first, because operator rules control availability and charges. Bluetooth and USB are alternatives when supported; Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers. Charge the phone for long sessions, use automatic shutoff if available, and turn tethering off when finished.
