How to Use Yahoo Search’s AI Overviews (Yahoo Scout) and Related Queries

Yahoo’s AI-generated search answers are currently branded Yahoo Scout, not “AI Overviews.” On desktop, mobile web, and the Yahoo Search app, you can ask Scout a complete question, refine the answer with contextual follow-ups, or start a fresh thread. Yahoo Search also shows a separate “Searches related to” section with query predictions; those suggestions are not part of Scout’s chat conversation.

This guide explains the exact steps, prompting techniques, voice option, platform differences, and checks you need to use both features reliably.

What Yahoo’s “AI Overviews” are called now

The phrase “AI Overviews” describes what many readers expect to see: an AI-generated answer alongside or above ordinary search results. Yahoo’s current name for its AI answer experience is Yahoo Scout. Yahoo introduced Scout as an AI answer engine that synthesizes information from the open web, Yahoo data, and Yahoo content.

That naming distinction matters when you are looking for the feature. Help instructions and interface labels use Scout, Ask a follow up, New Thread, and, in the mobile app, Ask AI. Yahoo’s launch announcement on January 27, 2026, also described personalization, deeper experiences in selected verticals, and advertising opportunities as planned development. Those launch-era plans should not be treated as proof that every future capability is available in your account today.

Where Yahoo Scout is available

Yahoo says Scout is available in beta on three access routes:

  • Desktop web: open Yahoo Scout search in a desktop browser.
  • Mobile web: open Yahoo Scout from a phone or tablet browser.
  • Yahoo Search app: use the app on iOS or Android.

A Yahoo account is needed to see current chat threads. Yahoo’s getting-started guidance does not say that an account is required merely to begin a search, so an account prompt may affect thread history rather than the initial question. Availability can change while the service is in beta; if a control is missing, check that you are using a supported route and that the app is current.

Use Yahoo Scout on a desktop

Desktop is the clearest option when you want to compare the generated answer with several source pages or compose a detailed prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Yahoo Scout search. Use the Scout search experience rather than assuming that a standard results page will automatically contain a chat answer.
  2. Enter a complete question. Include the subject, the result you want, and any important limits. For example: “Explain the differences between USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt 4 for a laptop buyer in 2026, using a short table.”
  3. Select Send. Wait for Scout to generate its answer and any linked supporting sources.
  4. Refine the response in the same thread. Enter your next request in Ask a follow up. A follow-up can ask for a shorter explanation, a different format, a missing detail, or clarification of something Scout already said.
  5. Start over when the subject changes. Select New Thread to begin a separate conversation and prevent the previous subject from influencing the next answer.

A follow-up should make sense in context. “Which one is cheaper?” depends on the products or plans discussed earlier; “What is the current weather?” is better placed in a new thread if you have been discussing computer hardware.

Use Scout on mobile web or in the Yahoo Search app

The basic conversation flow is the same on a phone, but the controls are touch targets and the app adds voice input.

Mobile web

  1. Open Yahoo Scout on your mobile browser.
  2. Type a complete question and tap Send.
  3. Tap Ask a follow up to continue the same thread with the earlier messages available as context.
  4. Tap the plus icon to start a new search thread when you want a clean context.

Yahoo Search app for iOS or Android

  1. Open the Yahoo Search app.
  2. Enter your question and tap Send.
  3. Tap Ask a follow up to refine the answer without leaving the thread.
  4. Tap the plus icon to begin a new thread for a different topic or an answer that should not inherit earlier context.

The wording and placement of controls can change as the beta develops, but the functional distinction remains: a follow-up continues the current conversation, while the plus control creates a fresh one.

Write prompts that produce useful answers

Yahoo recommends a full sentence or complete question instead of a fragment. A specific prompt gives Scout enough information to decide what to explain and how to organize it.

Name the subject precisely

Broad wording forces the system to guess your intent. Compare “Tell me about batteries” with “Explain how lithium-ion battery capacity is measured in watt-hours and what that number means for a 14-inch laptop.” The second question identifies the technology, the measurement, and the audience’s practical concern.

State the format you want

Tell Scout how to shape the response. Useful instructions include:

  • “Give me a five-bullet summary.”
  • “Explain this for a first-time buyer.”
  • “Make a table with price, battery life, and weight.”
  • “Show the steps in order and include the setting names.”
  • “Keep the answer under 200 words, then list the sources to check.”

These directions affect presentation, not factual reliability. A shorter answer can still contain an error, so use the verification steps later in this guide for important decisions.

Add constraints that change the recommendation

Include the country or region, operating system, date range, budget, skill level, or other condition that materially changes the answer. For example: “Suggest a backup plan for a Windows 11 home user who has 2 TB of data, wants an offline copy, and needs to restore individual files.” Without those constraints, Scout may describe options that do not fit your equipment or location.

Use follow-ups to improve one answer

Do not repeat the entire original prompt when the needed context is already in the thread. Ask targeted follow-ups such as:

  • “Explain the second option in simpler language.”
  • “Which specification matters most for video calls?”
  • “Turn that explanation into a checklist.”
  • “What assumption in your answer is most uncertain?”

If Scout starts answering a different interpretation, correct it explicitly: “I meant the desktop version, not the mobile app. Keep the rest of the question the same.”

Understand threads, context, and the New Thread control

Scout’s follow-up mechanism is conversational. Earlier messages remain relevant, so a short question can refer to an item, date, or choice already discussed. This is useful for narrowing a subject in stages: first request an overview, then ask for a comparison, then request an implementation checklist.

Context can also become a liability. A long thread may contain old assumptions, a previous country, or a device you are no longer discussing. Select New Thread on desktop, or tap the plus icon on mobile web or in the app, when:

  • you are changing to an unrelated subject;
  • you want to remove earlier constraints from consideration;
  • the conversation has accumulated conflicting corrections;
  • you need to ask a high-stakes question without carrying over casual assumptions; or
  • you want a clean record of a separate task.

Current chat threads are associated with a Yahoo account. If a thread is not visible, confirm that you are signed in to the account that created it and that you have not switched between the app, mobile web, and desktop accounts.

“Searches related to” predictions are a different feature

Yahoo Search can show a “Searches related to” section with search predictions. These are suggested queries, not messages in Scout’s conversational thread.

Feature What it does How context works Best use
Yahoo Scout Generates an AI answer to a natural-language question. Follow-ups use earlier messages in the same thread. Explaining, comparing, summarizing, and iteratively refining a question.
“Searches related to” Suggests another query you might want to run. It is a search suggestion, not a continuing chat message. Making a query more specific or discovering a neighboring subject.

For example, after searching for “home Wi-Fi problems,” a related-query suggestion might point you toward a narrower search such as router placement or channel interference. Selecting that suggestion starts or changes a search; it does not ask Scout to remember a conversational decision. To keep a discussion tied to the earlier answer, use Ask a follow up inside the Scout thread instead.

Use voice input in the Yahoo Search app

Yahoo’s mobile app includes an optional voice route for asking AI questions. The steps are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Yahoo Search app.
  2. Tap the search bar from any tab.
  3. Select Ask AI.
  4. Tap the waveform icon.
  5. Speak when prompted.

Yahoo also describes choosing a voice style. The available styles can change over time, so do not assume that a particular voice list will appear on every device or app version. Review the transcribed question before relying on the answer when names, model numbers, measurements, or technical terms could have been misheard. You can continue with typed follow-ups after the spoken question if that is more precise.

Check Scout’s answer before acting on it

Yahoo Help states plainly: “AI can make mistakes.” Treat a generated answer as a starting point, not as an authority. Scout may combine information from multiple pages, and a fluent explanation can still contain an outdated specification, a missing condition, or a wrong inference.

Use the linked sources

Open the sources attached to the answer and check whether they actually support the relevant sentence. Prefer the original manufacturer, government agency, standards body, university, or service documentation when the question concerns a specification, policy, compatibility rule, or date. Check publication and update dates when the answer depends on current information.

Separate facts from recommendations

Ask Scout to identify assumptions and distinguish documented facts from its judgment. A statement such as “this device supports Wi-Fi 6E” can be checked against technical documentation; “this is the best choice” depends on your budget, priorities, and alternatives. Requesting a comparison table can expose which cells are sourced facts and which are conclusions.

Do not use it as professional advice

Yahoo advises users not to rely on Scout for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. For those subjects, use Scout to define terms or prepare questions for a qualified professional, then verify the answer with an authoritative source and obtain advice specific to your situation. Do not provide personal health, legal, or financial decisions based solely on a generated response.

Ask for uncertainty when the evidence is incomplete

Useful checks include:

  • “Which parts of this answer are time-sensitive?”
  • “What information would change the recommendation?”
  • “List claims that need confirmation from a primary source.”
  • “Are there competing interpretations of this question?”

These prompts do not guarantee correctness, but they make it easier to see where an answer needs independent confirmation.

Desktop, mobile web, and app: which route fits?

Access method Input Thread controls Distinct capability Choose it when
Desktop web Typed question Ask a follow up; New Thread Large screen for reading source links and composing detailed prompts. You are researching, comparing several sources, or writing a long request.
Mobile web Typed question Ask a follow up; plus icon for a new thread Browser access without installing the app. You need Scout on a phone or tablet and prefer the web.
Yahoo Search app for iOS or Android Typed question or optional voice input Ask a follow up; plus icon for a new thread Ask AI and waveform voice entry. You want voice input or already use the Yahoo Search app.

All three routes support the central pattern: ask a complete question, refine it in context, and reset the conversation when the subject changes.

Practical prompt patterns

Explaining a technical concept

Start with the audience and desired depth: “Explain containerization to a web developer who understands virtual machines but has not used containers. Use one analogy, then list three practical differences.” Follow with “Now show a minimal deployment checklist, and mark which steps are environment-specific.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing choices

Define the criteria before asking for a verdict: “Compare these two monitors for a programmer who works eight hours per day. Use resolution, text sharpness, refresh rate, ports, warranty, and price as the columns. Identify which claims require checking on the current product pages.” This prevents a generic “which is better?” answer from hiding the trade-offs.

Troubleshooting

Provide symptoms, what changed, and what you already tried: “My Android phone connects to Wi-Fi but apps report no internet after a router restart. The laptop works on the same network. Give diagnostic steps in order, beginning with checks that do not erase settings.” Ask a follow-up after each result rather than starting a new thread, unless you switch to a different problem.

Planning a task

State the deadline, resources, and acceptable alternatives: “Create a two-day plan to migrate 500 GB of photos from one external drive to another. Include verification, a failure-recovery step, and a point where I should stop if the source drive reports errors.” A new thread is appropriate if you later ask about an unrelated project.

Troubleshooting missing controls or unexpected answers

Scout does not appear

  • Confirm that you opened Yahoo Scout rather than an ordinary results page.
  • Try the desktop site, mobile web, or Yahoo Search app; beta availability can differ by route.
  • Update the iOS or Android app if you are using the app.
  • Sign in if you need to retrieve current chat threads.

The follow-up ignores earlier details

  • Check that you used Ask a follow up instead of starting a separate search.
  • Restate the key constraint in one sentence, especially a country, date, device, or budget.
  • Start a new thread if earlier messages contain conflicting assumptions, then ask the question from scratch.

A related suggestion gives the wrong kind of result

Remember that “Searches related to” is a query prediction. Use it to broaden or narrow a search, then ask Scout a complete question if you want a conversational explanation. It will not automatically preserve the decisions made in a previous Scout thread.

The answer sounds confident but seems wrong

Open the cited sources, check dates and scope, and ask Scout to list uncertain claims. For medical, legal, financial, or other professional matters, stop at explanation and obtain advice from a qualified professional rather than treating Scout’s output as a decision.

A reliable workflow for everyday searches

  1. Choose the route: desktop for detailed reading, mobile web for browser access, or the app if you want voice input.
  2. Ask a complete, constrained question: identify the subject, audience, format, and conditions that matter.
  3. Inspect the answer and its sources: separate documented facts from recommendations.
  4. Use one or more targeted follow-ups: request clarification, a different format, or an explanation of assumptions.
  5. Reset deliberately: choose New Thread or the mobile plus icon when changing subjects or discarding old context.
  6. Verify consequential claims independently: especially claims involving health, law, money, safety, compatibility, or current rules.

This workflow uses Scout for what it does well—organizing and refining information—while preserving the checks Yahoo recommends for errors and high-stakes decisions.
