Choose based on the expression your task requires—not on an assumption that both libraries support the same XPath language.
Choose the right Python XPath approach
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few straightforward paths and no extra dependency | xml.etree.ElementTree |
It is included with Python and supports a limited set of XPath-style lookups. Python’s ElementTree documentation explicitly describes this as limited support. |
| XPath functions, richer predicates, or other XPath 1.0 expressions | lxml.etree |
It evaluates XPath 1.0 expressions with .xpath(). See the lxml XPath guide. |
| Namespace-aware queries or changing values in an expression | lxml.etree |
Its XPath call accepts prefix-to-URI namespace mappings and variable arguments, documented in the lxml XPath guide. |
ElementTree is not a full XPath engine: do not assume that every XPath function, axis, or expression will work. If a required expression falls outside its supported subset, use a full XPath implementation such as lxml rather than trying to force the expression into a simpler path.
Use XPath-style paths with ElementTree
The following runnable example parses an XML string, selects direct child books, then finds titles beneath books anywhere in the tree:
import xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
xml_text = """<catalog>
<book id="b1"><title>XPath Basics</title></book>
<book id="b2"><title>Python XML</title></book>
</catalog>"""
root = ET.fromstring(xml_text)
books = root.findall("./book")
matching_titles = root.findall(".//book/title")
for title in matching_titles:
print(title.text)
./bookselectsbookchildren directly under the current element..//book/titlesearches descendants for abookand then itstitlechild.
ElementTree also documents support for selected forms such as parent steps, attribute predicates, and positional predicates. Consult the supported syntax in the official documentation before using a more involved expression; the module’s scope is deliberately limited.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use full XPath 1.0 with lxml
Install lxml in the environment running your script with python -m pip install lxml. Then parse the XML and call .xpath() on an element or tree:
from lxml import etree
xml_text = """<catalog>
<book id="b1"><title>XPath Basics</title></book>
<book id="b2"><title>Python XML</title></book>
</catalog>"""
root = etree.fromstring(xml_text.encode())
books = root.xpath("//book[@id='b2']")
print(books[0].findtext("title"))
The XPath expression selects every book with an id attribute equal to b2. The returned value is a list; this example reads the first match. If a match is not guaranteed, check that the list is non-empty before indexing it.

Handle namespaces in lxml queries
In XML with a default namespace, element names are namespace-qualified even if the source has no visible prefix. Bind a convenient prefix to the namespace URI in the XPath call and use that prefix in the expression:
from lxml import etree
xml_ns = b'<root xmlns="urn:catalog"><item>Example</item></root>'
ns_root = etree.fromstring(xml_ns)
items = ns_root.xpath("//c:item", namespaces={"c": "urn:catalog"})
print(items[0].text)
The prefix c is chosen for the query; it maps to the namespace URI urn:catalog. Supply the prefix-to-URI mapping in namespaces when evaluating the expression.

Pass changing values as XPath variables
When a value changes between calls, keep it out of the XPath string and pass it as a variable. lxml documents variable arguments for XPath evaluation:
book_id = "b2"
find_by_id = root.xpath("//book[@id=$book_id]", book_id=book_id)
This keeps the query expression separate from the supplied value. Avoid building XPath strings by interpolating input into the expression.

Common problems and fixes
- An ElementTree expression is rejected or returns no match: the expression may use syntax outside ElementTree’s limited supported subset, or its path may not match the document structure. Check the official supported syntax and use lxml for XPath 1.0 features.
- A namespace query returns no elements: namespaced tags must be queried with a prefix mapped to the namespace URI in lxml. Add a
namespacesmapping and use that prefix in the XPath. - Indexing the result raises an error: an XPath lookup can return an empty list. Check for a match before accessing an item by index.
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'lxml': install lxml into the same Python environment that runs the script withpython -m pip install lxml.
Performance and dependency trade-offs
ElementTree avoids adding a library dependency when its supported path lookups are sufficient. lxml adds a dependency but supplies XPath 1.0 evaluation and documented namespace and variable support. There is no general speed winner established here: performance depends on document size, query shape, parser settings, and library versions. For a performance-sensitive workload, benchmark your own representative XML and queries in the deployment environment.
