Match the earbud connector to the device’s audio port. Plug 3.5 mm earbuds into a 3.5 mm jack, connect USB-C earbuds to a USB-C device that supports USB audio, or use the correct Lightning-to-3.5 mm or USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter when the device has no headphone jack. A USB-C-shaped plug alone does not guarantee that a phone or computer supports the audio mode your earbuds need.
The steps below cover iPhone, Android and laptop connections, including microphone and button compatibility, adapter choices, setup checks and fixes for silent or partially working earbuds.

Start with the connector, not the brand
Look at the plug on the earbuds and the port on the host device. The physical shape determines what can be inserted; the device’s audio support determines whether anything plays after insertion.
| Earbud connector | Device requirement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog plug | A standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, or a compatible digital-to-analog adapter | Insert directly into the jack. If there is no jack, connect the appropriate USB-C-to-3.5 mm or Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter first. |
| USB-C plug | A USB-C port that supports the required USB audio mode | Connect directly to the USB-C port. USB-C is a connector standard, not a promise that every host supports audio accessories. |
| Lightning plug | An iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with a Lightning connector and iOS 10 or later | Connect directly to the Lightning port. The same iOS requirement applies to Apple’s Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. |
Apple’s support instructions describe these connector requirements and the adapter paths in detail: Apple’s wired-headphones guide.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
Identify the three common wired-earbud types
3.5 mm earbuds
The round 3.5 mm plug is the most broadly reusable option. It carries analog audio and works immediately in a matching headphone jack. Apple says its 3.5 mm EarPods work with Apple products and other products that have a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Phones and thin laptops increasingly omit this jack. In that case, the adapter must be designed for the host port and must contain the audio circuitry needed to convert the device’s output into the analog signal expected by the earbuds. A passive cable that merely changes the plug shape may not work.
USB-C earbuds
USB-C earbuds generally receive digital audio from the host and include their own digital-to-analog conversion. Connect them directly only when the phone or computer supports USB audio accessories. Two devices can have identical USB-C ports while differing in accessory support, power behavior or microphone handling.

Lightning earbuds
Lightning earbuds are designed for Apple devices with Lightning ports. Apple specifies an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with a Lightning connector and iOS 10 or later for Lightning EarPods. They are not a general-purpose choice for Android phones or laptops because those hosts normally lack a Lightning port and the associated accessory support.
Use wired earbuds with an iPhone
First, determine whether the iPhone has USB-C or Lightning
Inspect the charging port or look up the exact model. A USB-C iPhone needs USB-C accessories or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter. A Lightning iPhone needs Lightning earbuds or a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter for conventional earbuds. Do not buy an adapter based only on the phone’s general appearance.
USB-C iPhone with USB-C earbuds
- Unlock the iPhone and remove any debris from the USB-C port without using metal tools.
- Insert the USB-C earbud plug fully into the USB-C port.
- Start a song or video. Open the iPhone audio-output picker if sound continues through the built-in speaker, and select the connected wired device.
- Make a short test recording or call if the microphone matters. Playback confirms speaker output, but it does not prove that the inline microphone or buttons are supported.
Apple’s USB-C EarPods instructions require a USB-C-equipped host. For the exact iPhone models Apple currently lists for its USB-C adapter, consult the live product compatibility list rather than relying on a generic “works with iPhone” label.

USB-C iPhone with existing 3.5 mm earbuds
- Plug a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm headphone adapter into the iPhone’s USB-C port.
- Insert the 3.5 mm earbud plug into the adapter’s headphone socket.
- Play audio and verify that the output changes to the wired connection.
- Test calls and inline controls separately. Audio can work even when a particular adapter does not pass microphone input or button commands.
Apple describes its USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter as a way to connect standard 3.5 mm audio devices to USB-C hosts. Its US store showed a one-time accessed price of $9.00 in 2026; that figure is a volatile listing price, not a universal or permanent market price: Apple’s adapter listing.

Lightning iPhone
- For Lightning EarPods, insert the Lightning plug directly into the phone.
- For 3.5 mm earbuds, insert Apple’s or another compatible Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter into the Lightning port.
- Plug the earbuds into the adapter, then start audio playback.
- Confirm call audio and microphone operation before relying on the setup for meetings.
Apple’s Lightning-to-3.5 mm instructions specify iOS 10 or later. Lightning headset components and accessory requirements are also described in Apple’s MFi FAQ. A Lightning adapter is the correct reuse path for a 3.5 mm headset; a USB-C adapter cannot be substituted.
Check the iPhone output when there is no sound
With the earbuds connected, open the audio-output control from the playback screen or Control Center and choose the wired device when it appears. If it does not appear, disconnect and reconnect the adapter, remove a case that prevents full insertion, and test the earbuds on another known-compatible device.
Use wired earbuds with an Android phone
Android phone with a 3.5 mm jack
- Insert the 3.5 mm plug completely into the headphone jack.
- Play audio and adjust the phone’s media volume.
- Place a test call if you need the inline microphone. Some phones support headset microphones and button commands differently from their speaker output.
If the phone has separate headset and microphone requirements, consult the manufacturer’s specifications. A four-contact headset plug is commonly needed for microphone input, but the phone and headset wiring still have to agree.

- Confirm from the phone maker’s specifications that the USB-C port supports analog audio through an adapter or supports USB audio accessories.
- Choose a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter explicitly identified as compatible with that phone or audio mode.
- Connect the adapter to the phone, then connect the 3.5 mm earbuds to the adapter.
- Play audio and test the microphone with a voice recording or call.
Not every USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter works with every Android phone. Some adapters contain a digital audio converter; others expect a host that provides analog audio on USB-C. The phone’s USB-C port may support charging and data while rejecting one of these audio methods.

Shielded enamel wire can still ensure stable signal transmission with daily use. Metal-coated connectors for better contact ensure stable and lossless audio signal transmission
- 【Warm Tips】 If your USB C device includes a 3.5mm audio jack, this adapter may not support phone calls. For example, some models for Galaxy (S9/S8/S10, Note 9/Note 8) and for iPad Pro (11" / 12.9", including iPad Pro 2018) may not support phone calls or music control
Android phone with USB-C earbuds
- Check that the exact phone model supports USB audio output.
- Connect the USB-C earbuds directly and wait briefly for the phone to switch its media route.
- Use the phone’s media-output picker if sound remains on the speaker.
- Test microphone input, play/pause, volume and call-answer buttons individually.
USB-C digital audio and analog 3.5 mm audio are not interchangeable assumptions. A Bose support reference distinguishes those signal types and cautions that some adapter combinations fail: Bose’s USB-C and 3.5 mm connection guidance. Use that distinction as a troubleshooting principle, not as a compatibility list for every Android model.
Use wired earbuds with a laptop
Laptop with one 3.5 mm headset jack
- Insert the 3.5 mm plug into the port marked with a headphone or headset icon.
- Play audio and select the wired output in the operating system’s sound controls if the laptop does not switch automatically.
- For calls, select the headset microphone as the input device and make a short recording.
A combined headset jack normally carries both headphone and microphone signals. Some older laptops have separate headphone-out and microphone-in ports; use the labels or the computer manual to identify which is which. A three-contact stereo plug may play sound but cannot provide a headset microphone through a combined port.
USB-C laptop without a headphone jack
You have two practical options:
- Use a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with existing analog earbuds.
- Use USB-C earbuds that the computer recognizes as a USB audio device.
- Connect the adapter or earbuds to a USB-C port that supports peripherals. If one port is charge-only or has restricted functions, try another port.
- Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the connected device for output and, when required, input. On macOS this is available through Control Center or System Settings; on Windows it is available through the taskbar sound control or Sound settings. Labels vary by version.
- Play audio, then test the microphone in the meeting or recording application rather than assuming system output selection also changed the app’s input.
Apple lists many Mac models as compatible with its USB-C adapter, but that listing does not establish compatibility for every Windows or Linux laptop. Check the computer maker’s documentation for USB audio and headset-microphone support.
Choose between an adapter and new USB-C or Lightning earbuds
| Option | Best when | Advantages | Checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep 3.5 mm earbuds and add USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter | Your existing earbuds fit well or you need to use them with several USB-C devices | Reuses the headset; inexpensive adapters are widely available; easy to replace the earbuds separately | The adapter must support the host’s audio mode and may not pass every microphone or control function |
| Keep 3.5 mm earbuds and add Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter | You have a Lightning iPhone or other supported Lightning Apple device | Retains a familiar analog headset without buying new earbuds | Requires the Lightning connector and iOS 10 or later under Apple’s stated requirement |
| USB-C earbuds | You use USB-C phones or computers that support USB audio | No separate adapter; one digital accessory can work across compatible USB-C hosts | Host compatibility, microphone behavior and controls vary; USB-C alone does not guarantee audio |
| Lightning earbuds | You use a supported Lightning Apple device | Direct connection without a 3.5 mm adapter | Limited to Lightning hosts; unsuitable for ordinary Android phones and most laptops |
For a household with both 3.5 mm and USB-C devices, an adapter is often the most flexible reuse strategy. For a single compatible USB-C phone, direct USB-C earbuds remove one cable junction. Neither choice eliminates the need to verify microphone and button support.

Fix common failures
No sound at all
- Push the plug or adapter fully into the port. A case, lint or a partially inserted plug can leave the connector electrically incomplete.
- Confirm that the plug and adapter match the host: Lightning for a Lightning port, USB-C for a USB-C port, and 3.5 mm for a headphone jack or suitable adapter.
- Open the device’s audio-output picker and select the wired accessory.
- Raise media volume rather than only ringtone volume.
- Test the earbuds on a known-compatible device. If they fail there too, inspect the cable and plug for damage; if they work, investigate the original host or adapter.
- With USB-C, confirm that the host supports the adapter’s digital or analog audio method. A shape-compatible connector is not enough.
Sound works but the microphone does not
- Check the call or recording app’s selected input device; applications can override the operating system default.
- Verify that the adapter supports headset microphone input, not only stereo output.
- Try a different known-compatible headset. This separates an earbud wiring fault from a phone, computer or adapter limitation.
- On a laptop with separate ports, connect the microphone plug to the microphone input or use a proper combined-headset adapter.
Buttons or volume controls fail
Inline controls are not guaranteed to work across hosts. Apple notes that some functions, including volume or playback controls, can fail on earlier Apple products even when audio plays. Treat working sound and working controls as separate compatibility tests. If calls work but volume buttons do not, use the device’s on-screen controls or try a headset and adapter documented for that host.
The connector feels loose or audio cuts out
- Remove lint from around the port using a non-metallic, non-abrasive method recommended for the device; do not force debris deeper.
- Check for a bent plug, cracked cable strain relief or damaged adapter socket.
- Try another port on a laptop, then test without a case.
- If movement changes the sound, replace the damaged cable or adapter rather than repeatedly stressing the port.
Apple EarPods need cleaning
Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and gentle dry brushing of the microphone and speaker meshes. Do not run the EarPods under water, pour liquid into openings or use sharp or abrasive objects. Let any cleaned surface remain dry before reconnecting it.
A practical compatibility checklist
Use this sequence before buying an adapter or headset:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Write down the host port: 3.5 mm, USB-C or Lightning.
- Identify the earbud plug: analog 3.5 mm, USB-C digital, or Lightning.
- Confirm the audio mode: for USB-C, verify USB audio or the specific analog-adapter requirement in the host documentation.
- Decide whether you need the microphone: calls, gaming and meetings require headset-input support, not merely headphone output.
- Check controls: volume, play/pause, track skip and call-answer commands may be host-dependent.
- Check software requirements: Lightning EarPods and Apple’s Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter require iOS 10 or later according to Apple.
- Test before relying on it: play audio, make a recording, place a call and operate the buttons.
What to expect from USB-C audio
USB-C describes the connector and electrical interface, not one universal headphone behavior. A USB-C headset may enumerate as a digital USB audio device. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter may contain a converter, or it may depend on analog audio support from the host. Phones and computers can implement these options differently.
This is why an adapter that works on one Android phone may fail on another, and why a USB-C headset can work on a laptop but not on a particular phone. When a seller lists only “USB-C compatible,” look for the host models, USB audio class support, microphone support and operating-system requirements before purchasing.
