Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) to capture an Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) trace while the computer starts, then open the resulting ETL file in Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA). In WPA, begin with the Regions of Interest timeline, identify whether the delay is before or after the desktop appears, and correlate that interval with process CPU and disk activity. This produces evidence about which processes are active during the delay; it does not by itself prove that a task is safe to disable.
What WPR and WPA show you
WPR and WPA are complementary parts of the Windows Performance Toolkit. WPR records low-level ETW events to an ETL file. WPA opens that ETL file and turns the recorded events into timelines, graphs and pivotable data tables. Together they let you see when startup work occurs and which processes contribute to it, rather than guessing from the list in Task Manager.

The workflow is diagnostic, not an automatic optimizer. A process that consumes CPU or performs disk I/O during a slow interval is a candidate for investigation. The trace does not establish that the process is unnecessary, malicious or safe to disable. Check the task’s purpose, dependencies and owner before changing startup configuration.
Define the startup problem before recording
“Slow startup” can describe different phases, and the correct capture scenario depends on which phase is affected.

Desktop appears late
If the sign-in screen or desktop takes a long time to arrive, investigate the main boot path. Work in this phase directly delays the point at which Windows becomes usable.
Desktop appears, but the computer remains busy
If the desktop is visible but applications open slowly, the disk stays active or the system feels sluggish, investigate post-desktop startup work. Microsoft’s boot assessment terminology separates Main Path Boot Duration from Post On/Off Duration; the latter includes startup tasks that continue after the desktop appears.
Fast Startup is not every kind of boot
Microsoft’s documented walkthrough uses the Fast Startup performance scenario. Fast Startup is a specific hybrid shutdown-and-resume path, so a Fast Startup trace should not be treated as interchangeable with a full restart, a cold boot or a wake-from-sleep problem. Record the same scenario that produces the complaint and label your notes accordingly.
Check tool availability and prepare a baseline
Microsoft documents the WPR user interface and WPA as components available through the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). The WPR command-line tool is documented as shipping with Windows 8.1 or later. Consequently, the exact menus present on a particular installation depend on the Windows version and on whether the ADK components were installed. Do not assume that every Windows installation already contains both graphical tools.
Before capturing, write down the Windows edition and version, whether the test is Fast Startup or another boot path, the selected WPR profile and the symptom you are measuring. Keep conditions comparable: use the same power state, external devices and major applications between runs. A single iteration can reveal a useful lead, but it is not a statistically stable benchmark.
- Close work you do not need for the test, while leaving the software that normally launches at startup in place.
- Disconnect or reconnect peripherals consistently between runs; device initialization can affect boot timing.
- Record whether the complaint occurs before sign-in, immediately after sign-in or several minutes later.
- Choose an ETL destination with enough free space and permissions for WPR to write the trace.
Capture a Fast Startup trace with WPR
The following sequence follows Microsoft’s documented Fast Startup exercise and is the clearest starting point for a novice. It captures one run across a restart and produces the ETL that WPA will analyze.

- Open WPR. Launch Windows Performance Recorder from the Start menu. If it is not installed, add the WPR and WPA components through the ADK appropriate to your Windows installation.
- Select the recording profile. In the WPR interface, select First Level Triage and CPU Usage. These provide a general system view and process-level CPU information for the initial investigation.
- Choose the scenario. Set Performance scenario to Fast Startup. This label matters: it tells you what kind of boot the ETL represents.
- Set the iteration count. For the documented quick trace, set Number of iterations to 1. Treat that as one observation, not as a performance average.
- Start recording. Choose the path where WPR should save the ETL output, then start the recording. WPR initiates the system restart required to collect the Fast Startup trace.
- Allow tracing to finish. After Windows comes back, follow the WPR prompt and wait until recording has completed. Do not shut down the recorder while it is still finalizing the file.
- Confirm the ETL. Verify that the trace file exists at the destination you selected. Keep the file with notes identifying the scenario, date and iteration.
WPR also has a command-line interface. Built-in profiles can be selected there, and custom profiles can be authored in XML. The command line is useful for repeatable or automated collection, but the graphical path above is easier when you are learning the workflow. Use a profile designed for the scenario you are diagnosing rather than assuming that a Fast Startup profile captures every boot type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen the ETL and load the Fast Startup layout in WPA
- Launch WPA. Open Windows Performance Analyzer and choose the saved ETL file.
- Apply the supplied profile. In WPA, select Profiles > Apply > Browse Catalog, then choose FastStartup.wpaprofile. The profile arranges views suited to the Fast Startup exercise.
- Go to Deep Analysis. Open the Deep Analysis tab. This is where the preconfigured graphs and tables can be inspected and rearranged.
- Start with Regions of Interest. Use the Regions of Interest timeline to orient yourself to the Fast Startup subphases. Select the interval that contains the delay you observed, then align the process views to that same time range.
WPA views are interactive. You can zoom a timeline, select a range, pivot a table by process or activity and search for a name. Keep the selected time range visible while switching between CPU and disk graphs; correlation is much easier when every view covers the same interval.
Find work that overlaps the slow interval
Use the timeline to identify the phase
Regions of Interest gives you a phase-level map rather than a single total. Note when each subphase begins and ends, then compare those boundaries with the moment the desktop became visible and with the period of continued activity afterward. A long phase is where to look; it is not, by itself, proof that one process caused the delay.
Inspect process CPU usage
Open the process CPU view and sort or pivot by process for the selected interval. Look for sustained or concentrated CPU activity that overlaps the delayed phase. A brief spike that occurs outside the complaint window is less relevant than a process that remains active throughout it. Use the process name and the available event detail to identify what kind of work was recorded.
Inspect process disk usage
Switch to process disk-usage data while keeping the same timeline selection. High disk activity can explain a system that feels busy even when CPU use is modest. Look for reads or writes that overlap the slow phase and for multiple processes competing during the same period. Disk activity indicates I/O work; it does not reveal whether the underlying task is required.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Correlate, then investigate
A useful candidate is one whose activity is both substantial and well aligned with the delayed phase. Compare several candidates rather than stopping at the first process at the top of a graph. Check whether a process is part of a service, driver, security product, update component or application that you intentionally use. The trace narrows the search; it does not authorize a blind disablement.

Interpret main-path and post-desktop work
| What you observe | Where to focus in WPA | What the observation means |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop or sign-in arrives late | Regions of Interest covering the main boot path, plus process CPU and disk views over that interval | Activity in the main path may be delaying the visible start of Windows. |
| Desktop appears on time, then the system remains busy | Post-on/off portion of the timeline, with process CPU and disk activity aligned to it | Background startup work is continuing after the desktop; it may affect responsiveness without extending the initial boot screen. |
| One process is active but the phase is short | The exact event range around that activity | The process is recorded during startup, but the trace does not establish that it is the dominant cause. |
| Several processes overlap a long disk-heavy interval | Process disk usage and the corresponding timeline range | Storage contention or serialized I/O may be contributing; investigate all major participants before changing one task. |
Microsoft’s boot assessment guidance lists loaded processes and services, background processes and services, software preload and device initialization as categories that can affect Fast Startup. Use those categories to organize investigation, not as a diagnosis of your particular machine.
CPU versus disk: choosing the next view
CPU and disk graphs answer different questions, so inspect both before deciding that a task is responsible.
- CPU-heavy interval: A process is actively executing work. Check whether the activity is sustained, whether it begins at the phase boundary and whether other processes are waiting on it.
- Disk-heavy interval: A process is issuing storage operations or waiting on them. Check for overlapping readers and writers, repeated bursts and a queue of work that persists after the desktop.
- Low CPU and low disk, but visible delay: Expand the time range and inspect other recorded events. The trace may show waiting, synchronization or device-related activity that is not obvious in a top-level process graph.
These are investigation patterns, not performance thresholds. The supplied Microsoft material does not define a universal CPU percentage, disk rate or time limit at which a startup task becomes “slow.” Judge activity against your baseline and the phase in which it occurs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Load symbols only when deeper diagnosis is needed
The initial workflow needs the timeline and process tables. If you must understand which functions inside a process are consuming time, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends loading symbols in WPA so stack views can show symbolized function names. Symbol loading is an optional deeper step, not a prerequisite for locating a process that overlaps a delayed startup phase.
Use symbols after you have narrowed the problem to a reproducible interval. A symbolized stack can explain whether the process is spending time in application code, system libraries or another component, but it still does not tell you whether disabling the associated service is safe.
Compare collection choices without mixing their meanings
| Choice | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Startup scenario | Diagnosing a complaint that occurs during the hybrid Fast Startup path documented by Microsoft | Do not use it as a substitute for a full restart or another boot scenario. |
| WPR graphical interface | First trace, guided profile selection and a novice-friendly capture | The visible options depend on installed toolkit components and Windows version. |
| WPR command line | Repeatable collection, scripts and custom XML profiles | Select a profile that matches the scenario; command-line availability is documented for Windows 8.1 or later. |
| CPU view | Finding processes executing sustained work during the delayed interval | CPU activity alone does not prove causation. |
| Disk view | Finding storage-heavy or competing I/O during startup | Disk activity alone does not establish that a task can be removed. |
| Main-path analysis | Explaining why the desktop appears late | Focus on activity before the visible desktop. |
| Post-on/off analysis | Explaining continued work after the desktop appears | Focus on background startup activity after the visible desktop. |
Make the trace repeatable enough to trust
Use the first trace to learn the layout and identify candidates. For a stronger conclusion, repeat the same scenario under the same conditions and compare the phase and process activity. If a candidate appears in one run but not another, record what changed: network state, attached devices, pending updates, sign-in timing or the application set. A one-run result can be a lead, but it should not be presented as a stable benchmark.

Keep each ETL with a short log containing:
- Windows version and edition.
- Boot scenario: Fast Startup, restart or another explicitly named path.
- WPR profile selections and iteration number.
- Time at which the desktop became visible.
- Time at which noticeable disk or CPU activity subsided.
- Processes that overlapped the delayed interval.
What to do after you identify a candidate
- Identify ownership. Determine whether the process belongs to Windows, a driver, a security component, an update mechanism or an application.
- Check purpose and dependencies. Find out what feature depends on the service or task and whether it is required for security, networking, hardware or business software.
- Prefer reversible changes. If you test a configuration change, record the original setting and change one item at a time so a later trace can be interpreted.
- Capture again. Re-run the identical startup scenario and compare the same Regions of Interest and process views.
- Restore if behavior worsens. If startup, security or device behavior degrades, return the setting to its recorded state rather than leaving a task disabled solely because it appeared in the ETL.
WPR and WPA identify recorded activity; they do not supply a safe-disable list. Configuration decisions require context outside the trace.

Troubleshooting common capture and analysis problems
WPR or WPA is missing
Check whether the ADK components were installed for the Windows version you are using. Microsoft documents WPR and WPA distribution through the ADK, while the command-line WPR is documented as part of Windows 8.1 and later. The absence of a Start-menu shortcut does not mean the operating system has the same graphical components as another PC.
The ETL is empty or was not saved
Confirm that you selected a writable destination, started the recording and allowed WPR to finish after the reboot. Look for the completed ETL at the path chosen before capture. Do not analyze a partially written file as if it were a complete run.
The WPA graphs do not match the walkthrough
Apply the FastStartup.wpaprofile through Profiles > Apply > Browse Catalog, then open Deep Analysis. Without the profile, you can still inspect ETL data, but the expected Fast Startup layout and Regions of Interest view may not be present.
The trace shows many active processes
Narrow the selected time range to the delayed phase, compare CPU and disk views and inspect whether activity occurs before or after the desktop. Rank candidates by overlap and duration rather than by name alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
You cannot see useful function names
Start with process-level analysis. If function-level detail is necessary, load symbols in WPA as an optional deeper diagnostic step and then inspect stacks for the selected interval.
Best Value
A compact decision path
- Decide whether the complaint is late desktop availability or post-desktop sluggishness.
- Choose a WPR scenario that matches that complaint; use Fast Startup only when Fast Startup is what you are testing.
- Capture an ETL, noting profile, Windows version and iteration.
- Open the ETL in WPA and apply FastStartup.wpaprofile when analyzing the documented Fast Startup workflow.
- Use Regions of Interest to select the delayed phase.
- Compare process CPU and disk activity over exactly that interval.
- Investigate the highest-overlap candidates and verify their purpose before any configuration change.
- Repeat the same scenario after a reversible change to confirm whether the phase actually improved.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Fast Startup trace to diagnose a slow restart?
Not reliably. Fast Startup is a specific hybrid shutdown-and-resume scenario. Capture the boot path that produces your complaint and label the trace accordingly.
Does one WPR iteration prove which task is slowing my PC?
No. One run can reveal a candidate, but repeat comparable runs before treating the result as stable evidence.
Should I disable every process that appears in the trace?
No. Presence or activity in an ETL does not establish that a task is unnecessary or safe to disable. Verify ownership, purpose and dependencies, and make reversible changes one at a time.
Do I need symbols to find a slow startup task?
No. Regions of Interest plus process CPU and disk views are sufficient for the initial investigation. Symbols are useful when you need function-level stack details.
Why examine both CPU and disk usage?
A task may delay startup by executing CPU work, by issuing storage I/O or by participating in contention with other processes. The two views expose different parts of the same interval.
