How to Use Windows Device Manager to Roll Back or Reinstall a Display Driver

If your screen problem began immediately after a graphics-driver or Windows update, try Roll Back Driver first. Windows can restore the previously installed driver when one is available. If rollback is missing, fails, or does not solve the problem, uninstall the display adapter in Device Manager and restart; Windows will then attempt to reinstall a driver. These procedures apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although labels and checkboxes can vary by build and device.

Choose rollback or reinstall

The right operation depends on what changed and what Windows still has available. Rollback is a targeted way to return to the driver Windows retained before the recent change. Uninstalling removes the current device entry and asks Windows to detect it again after a restart. It is useful when the package may be damaged or when no earlier version is available, but it is not a promise that Windows will install the full manufacturer package.

Situation Use first Reason
The display problem started after a recent driver or Windows update Roll back the driver Microsoft specifically recommends rollback when a recent update introduced the problem. Microsoft’s display-flicker guidance documents this path.
Roll Back Driver is unavailable Uninstall, restart, then update if needed Windows cannot roll back when it has no previous driver version to restore.
Rollback completes but the fault remains Uninstall and reinstall, then obtain a suitable current driver if necessary A rollback only changes to the stored earlier version; it does not repair every display problem.
Windows does not restore a usable driver after restart Use the PC or display-adapter manufacturer’s support page The exact driver depends on the computer, adapter, edition and hardware configuration.
Only one application flickers Check Task Manager and the application first If Task Manager stays stable while the application flickers, Microsoft says an incompatible app is more likely than the display driver.

Save open work before either operation. Both rollback and uninstall require administrator permissions and normally require a restart, according to Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing the driver

  • Save your work: the confirmation process or restart can close applications.
  • Use an administrator account: Windows may request administrator credentials before allowing rollback or removal.
  • Identify the correct adapter: a PC can list more than one display adapter, such as integrated and discrete graphics. Do not remove a different device by mistake.
  • Record the symptom: note when the flicker, black screen, crash, wrong resolution or external-monitor failure began and which update preceded it.
  • Plan for a restart: have any sign-in information and unsaved-work recovery details available.
  • Keep the computer connected to power: especially on a laptop, avoid a shutdown during the driver change.
  • Know the hardware identity: write down the computer model or the exact adapter name shown in Device Manager. This prevents downloading a package for a similar model later.
  • Disconnect nonessential displays: if several monitors are attached and only one is failing, note which output is affected before changing anything. Reconnect and test each display after recovery.

Device Manager is a configuration tool, not a complete diagnostic system. A driver change cannot repair a loose cable, a monitor on the wrong input, a failing panel or an application that conflicts with the graphics stack. Recording the original symptom gives you a meaningful comparison after the restart.

How to roll back a display driver

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Device Manager, then open it.
  2. Expand Display adapters. Read the adapter names and select the one associated with the problem. If there are several entries, match the name to the affected display or graphics hardware rather than selecting the first item automatically.
  3. Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab. You can review the provider, date and version shown there before making a change; those details are useful if you later need the manufacturer’s support page.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver. If Windows asks why you are rolling back, choose the reason that best describes the problem and continue. Confirm any warning shown.
  6. Restart the PC when prompted, or restart it manually after the operation finishes.
  7. Reproduce the original problem: open the application that flickered, connect the external monitor that failed, or use the display at the resolution that was affected. Compare the result with the symptom you recorded.

Rollback is a restoration of the previous driver that Windows retained; it is not a download of an arbitrary older version. If the button is absent or disabled, Microsoft says Windows has no previous driver available and cannot complete this process. Do not treat a missing button as a failed click—move to the uninstall/reinstall path instead. See Microsoft’s explanation of the unavailable rollback option.

Why “Roll Back Driver” is grayed out

The usual reason is that Windows does not have an earlier driver version stored for that adapter. This can happen after a fresh Windows installation, after previous driver files were removed, or when the current package is the only version Windows can restore. The wording and availability can also differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds and between manufacturer packages.

There is no supported Device Manager setting that creates a missing rollback point. If the control is unavailable, save your work and use the uninstall procedure below. If you need a particular earlier release, obtain it only from the computer or display-adapter manufacturer’s official support resource and verify the exact model first. Avoid selecting a package simply because its name looks similar: integrated and discrete adapters, or different revisions of one product, can require different files.

How to uninstall and reinstall the display driver

  1. Save open work, sign in with administrator permissions, and open Device Manager from Start search.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the intended adapter and choose the uninstall command. Depending on the Windows version and package, it may appear as Uninstall device or similar wording.
  4. Read the confirmation dialog carefully. Microsoft display-specific instructions may show a checkbox labeled Attempt to remove the driver for this device; the exact checkbox is not present in every configuration. Follow the wording actually shown on your PC rather than assuming it will appear.
  5. Confirm the uninstall. The screen may change resolution, go black briefly, or fall back to a basic display mode.
  6. Restart the computer. Microsoft states that, after Windows restarts, it attempts to reinstall the driver for the device. The attempt is not a guarantee that the ideal manufacturer package will be restored. See Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions.
  7. After signing in, open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters. Check whether the adapter is present without an error symbol and test the display.

During the interval before the restart, Windows may use a basic display mode. Icons can appear larger, the resolution can be lower and hardware-accelerated applications may not run correctly. These temporary changes do not by themselves show that the uninstall failed. Complete the restart before judging the result.

If Windows does not reinstall a suitable driver, use its driver-update path or download the matching package from the PC or display-adapter manufacturer’s support site. Confirm the exact model, Windows edition and system architecture before installing; a package for a similar model can be incompatible. Microsoft’s general guidance is to contact the manufacturer when a current suitable driver is needed.

Using Device Manager’s update path

After a restart, the adapter may be listed but still use a basic or unsuitable driver. Right-click the adapter in Display adapters and use the available driver-update command. Follow the prompts Windows presents. If Windows reports that the best available driver is already installed but the display remains faulty, that result does not prove the package is the correct manufacturer release; use the computer or adapter maker’s support resource for the exact hardware.

Download only from a source that identifies your model. On a laptop, the computer maker’s package may be preferable because it is matched to that system’s firmware and integrated graphics configuration. On a separately installed graphics adapter, the adapter maker may provide the relevant package. Keep the downloaded file available until you have restarted and verified the display, but do not install a package intended for another model merely to obtain a newer date.

How to tell whether flicker is a driver problem

Flicker can come from a display driver, an incompatible application, a cable or monitor, or another hardware condition. Microsoft recommends comparing the normal desktop with Task Manager:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc (or search for it from Start).
  2. Watch Task Manager and the rest of the screen while the flicker occurs.
  3. If Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display, a display-driver cause is more likely, so rollback or reinstall is a reasonable next step.
  4. If Task Manager remains stable while other content flickers, an incompatible application is more likely. Close or update recently changed applications before repeatedly changing the driver.

This test is a triage signal, not a definitive hardware diagnosis. For external-monitor symptoms, Microsoft also provides a separate external-monitor troubleshooting guide.

Use the comparison while the symptom is actually occurring. A stable Task Manager after the flicker has stopped does not distinguish causes. If only a browser, game or video application flashes, close that program and check whether its own update or settings changed at the same time as the display problem.

What to do when the screen is difficult to use

A faulty driver can make the desktop hard to see or interact with. If the display is too unstable to complete Device Manager steps, Microsoft’s flicker guidance notes that Safe Mode may be needed. Safe Mode loads a limited environment so you can perform recovery steps, but the exact entry route depends on how Windows is starting and whether you can reach the sign-in or recovery screens. Use the current instructions in Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting page rather than guessing a key sequence for your device.

Once in a usable session, repeat the rollback or uninstall procedure and restart normally. If the screen remains unusable after restart, connect a known-working display when possible and obtain the correct driver from the computer manufacturer. Do not keep forcing restarts while an update or uninstall confirmation is still on screen; allow each operation to finish when the interface remains responsive.

After the restart: verify the result

  • Device Manager status: expand Display adapters and check that the intended adapter is listed. An error icon or a generic entry indicates that Windows may not have loaded the intended package.
  • Driver details: open Properties and review the provider, date and version so you know which package is active. Record these details if you need to report the problem.
  • Original symptom: repeat the action that caused the failure, such as launching a 3D application, waking the PC, changing resolution or connecting the second monitor.
  • Stability over time: a brief return to normal does not prove the problem is solved. Use the PC normally long enough to encounter the original condition again.
  • External displays: test the cable, input and monitor separately if only an external screen is affected. Driver recovery cannot fix a disconnected cable or a monitor set to the wrong input.
  • Multiple adapters: if the computer has integrated and discrete graphics, confirm which entry changed and whether the affected output is now driven by the expected adapter.

Common failure modes and the next move

Rollback is unavailable

Windows has no previous driver version to restore. Uninstall the adapter, restart, and allow Windows to attempt installation. If the result is unsuitable, install a verified package from the exact PC or adapter manufacturer.

Rollback changes nothing

Confirm that the adapter selected in Device Manager is the one driving the affected display. If it is, proceed to uninstall/reinstall rather than repeating rollback. Also check whether an application-only flicker is indicated by the Task Manager comparison.

The display returns at a low resolution

Windows may be using a basic or fallback driver while the manufacturer package is missing. Check Device Manager, then install the correct package from the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and Windows version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows does not reinstall after restart

Microsoft describes an attempt to reinstall, not a guaranteed result. Open Device Manager and use its driver-update path if available. If Windows still cannot find a suitable package, use the manufacturer’s support resource and confirm the hardware identity before downloading.

The issue continues after reinstall

A reinstall cannot correct every cause. Recheck Task Manager behavior, external-monitor connections and recently installed applications. If the symptom points away from the driver, changing drivers repeatedly may delay the real fix.

The wrong adapter was selected

Stop and identify the affected hardware before making another change. A system with more than one display adapter can continue showing an image even after the other adapter was removed, which can make the original problem appear unchanged. Use the adapter name and the monitor arrangement to select the intended entry.

The confirmation checkbox is missing

That wording is not shown in every Windows build or driver configuration. Do not assume the uninstall failed because the checkbox is absent. Read the dialog that appears, confirm the intended adapter, and follow the controls available on that PC.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 limitations

The cited Microsoft procedures cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. They do not establish identical wording for every build, OEM driver package or hardware configuration. You may see slightly different command names, confirmation text or checkbox availability. Use the label shown by your installation, keep the target adapter selected, and treat a restart as part of both workflows.

Neither rollback nor uninstall promises a particular performance level or a permanent repair. Rollback is most appropriate when a recent update clearly precedes the fault; uninstall/reinstall is the fallback when no previous version is available or the installed package appears damaged. When Windows cannot supply a suitable driver, the manufacturer’s support page is the authoritative next source for that specific computer or adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need administrator rights?

Yes. Microsoft says administrator permissions are required for rollback and uninstall operations in Device Manager. Sign in with an administrator account or provide credentials when Windows requests them.

Will uninstalling remove the graphics hardware?

No. The operation removes the device’s driver entry or package from Windows. The physical adapter remains installed. After a restart, Windows detects the device and attempts to reinstall a driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my resolution change after uninstalling?

Windows can temporarily use a basic display mode while the manufacturer driver is absent. Resolution and acceleration may return after restart and installation of a suitable package. If they do not, obtain the exact driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.

Can I roll back to any older driver?

Device Manager can restore only the previous driver that Windows retained. It does not provide a list of arbitrary historical versions. For a specific older release, use the official support page for the exact model and verify compatibility.

What if the screen is black before I can open Device Manager?

If the display is too difficult to use, Microsoft notes that Safe Mode may be needed. Follow the current Safe Mode guidance for Windows 10 or Windows 11, then perform the rollback or uninstall in the limited session. A known-working monitor can also help establish whether the fault is tied to one display.

Should I reinstall if only one app flickers?

Not immediately. Compare the app with Task Manager while the flicker occurs. If Task Manager stays stable, Microsoft says an incompatible application is more likely; close or update that app before repeatedly changing the display driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Windows says no suitable driver was found?

Use Device Manager’s update path and then visit the official support page for the PC or display adapter. Confirm the exact model, Windows edition and system architecture before downloading. Microsoft identifies the manufacturer as the source for a current suitable driver when Windows cannot provide one.

Is a paid driver utility or new graphics card required?

No purchase is required for the rollback or reinstall procedure described here. It uses Device Manager, a restart and, if necessary, a manufacturer driver download. Hardware replacement is outside these steps and should not be assumed to be the cause of a software-related symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I roll back a display driver in Windows?

Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open Properties for the affected adapter, choose the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver, confirm, and restart. The option works only when Windows has a previous driver available.

Why is Roll Back Driver grayed out?

Windows does not have an earlier driver version stored for that adapter. Uninstall the adapter, restart, and let Windows attempt a reinstall, or obtain a suitable package from the exact PC or adapter manufacturer’s support page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I reinstall my display driver in Device Manager?

In Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the intended adapter, choose the uninstall command, follow the confirmation wording shown, and restart. Windows then attempts to reinstall the device driver.

Will uninstalling the display adapter damage my monitor?

No. It changes Windows’ driver configuration, not the physical monitor or adapter. The screen may briefly use a low-resolution basic mode until Windows reinstalls a driver.

What if flicker continues after reinstalling?

Compare Task Manager with the rest of the screen, check external-monitor connections and recently changed applications, and verify the adapter in Device Manager. A persistent symptom may not be caused by the display driver.

The Bottom Line

Use Roll Back Driver when a display problem follows a recent update and the button is available. If Windows has no previous driver, or rollback does not help, uninstall the intended adapter, restart and let Windows attempt a reinstall. Verify the result in Device Manager and obtain the exact manufacturer package when Windows cannot restore a suitable driver.
