How to Use Windows Built-In VPN Instead of a Third-Party App

Yes—you can use Windows’ built-in VPN client instead of installing a separate VPN application when your VPN provider or employer gives you a server address, supported protocol and compatible sign-in details. The Windows client is only a connection tool: it does not supply a VPN subscription, server network or account.

On a supported Windows 11 edition, go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN > Add VPN, choose Windows (built-in) as the provider, then enter the endpoint and authentication details supplied by the service or your IT administrator. Do not guess the VPN type. If the service uses a proprietary protocol, plug-in or app-only feature, its own client is still required.

What Windows’ built-in VPN client does—and does not do

The built-in client creates a VPN connection profile in Windows. It can authenticate to a compatible workplace or commercial VPN server and route traffic through that tunnel. It does not act as a VPN server, create an account, choose a provider for you or provide an endpoint to connect to.

  • A server name or IP address.
  • The protocol required by that server.
  • The sign-in method and credentials, such as a username and password, one-time password, certificate or smart card.
  • Any certificate, domain, realm or other profile information required by the administrator.

A provider may support several protocols but publish settings for only one. Use its documented combination rather than testing random options. A profile can save successfully and still fail to connect when the protocol or authentication method does not match the server.

Information to collect before creating the profile

Windows field What to enter Where it comes from
VPN provider Windows (built-in) Microsoft’s built-in client selection
Connection name A recognizable label, such as “Work VPN” or the provider’s name You choose it; it only identifies the saved profile
Server name or address The exact hostname or IP address of the VPN gateway VPN provider or workplace administrator
VPN type IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, SSTP or Automatic, as specified by the server VPN provider or workplace administrator
Type of sign-in info Password, one-time password, certificate, smart card or another listed method Provider or administrator
Username and password Only when the selected authentication method requires them Your VPN account or organization
Certificate or smart card The installed certificate, smart card or trust chain required by the organization Organization’s managed configuration or certificate administrator

If you were given a configuration file for a proprietary client, that does not automatically mean Windows can import it. Ask whether the gateway accepts one of Windows’ native protocols and which exact fields to use.

Set up the connection in Windows 11

  1. Open the VPN settings. Select Start > Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
  2. Start a profile. Select Add VPN.
  3. Select the provider. In VPN provider, choose Windows (built-in). This is Microsoft’s documented selection for a native profile.
  4. Name the connection. Enter a label you will recognize in the VPN list. The name does not change the server or improve security.
  5. Enter the endpoint. In Server name or address, type the hostname or IP address exactly as supplied. Check spelling, punctuation and whether the administrator specified a particular gateway.
  6. Choose the protocol. Select the required value under VPN type. Available native choices are IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, SSTP and Automatic. Do not select one by trial and error; the server must support the choice.
  7. Choose authentication. Under Type of sign-in info, select the method your provider requires. Depending on the protocol and profile, Windows can use username/password, one-time-password workflows, certificates or smart cards.
  8. Supply credentials or certificates. Enter a username and password only if required, and install or select a supplied certificate or smart card when the organization uses certificate authentication. A certificate profile may also require a trusted root certificate or managed device configuration.
  9. Save the profile. Select Save. The profile appears in the VPN settings page.

To connect, open the saved profile and select Connect. You can also open the taskbar network control, select the VPN connection and connect from Quick Settings. A connected profile is labeled Connected; Windows 11 may show a blue shield on the network icon when it recognizes an active VPN.

Which native VPN type should you choose?

VPN type What the built-in option provides What you should do
IKEv2 A built-in tunneling option; it is also the protocol used by Windows’ documented LockDown VPN feature. Use it when the provider or administrator specifies IKEv2 and supplies the required authentication or certificates.
L2TP/IPsec A built-in option that normally depends on the server’s IPsec configuration and matching credentials or keys. Enter it only when the service documents L2TP/IPsec settings.
SSTP A built-in Windows tunneling option. Select it when the server is configured for SSTP.
PPTP A built-in option, but Microsoft describes older password-based authentication methods as less secure. Use only when an administrator explicitly requires it and understands the security trade-off; do not choose it merely because it connects easily.
Automatic Windows tries built-in protocols from most secure to least secure. It can help when the provider explicitly says Automatic is supported, but a documented protocol is preferable because it avoids ambiguity.

The protocol list is a compatibility list, not a ranking you can apply independently of the server. A commercial service that advertises only a proprietary protocol will not become compatible simply because Windows lists several native options.

Authentication: passwords, EAP and certificates

Native VPN profiles can use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) methods, including EAP-MSCHAPv2 for username-and-password authentication and EAP-TLS for certificate-based authentication. The exact choices shown by Windows depend on the VPN type and the profile supplied by the administrator.

Password-based sign-in

Password authentication is the simplest consumer setup. Enter the account name and password requested by the provider, and decide whether Windows should remember them on the device. Microsoft describes older password-based authentication as less secure than certificate or enterprise methods, so organizations commonly restrict it or pair it with additional controls.

One-time passwords and multi-factor sign-in

Some services require a one-time code in addition to a username and password. Windows’ profile field must match the provider’s documented workflow; a native profile cannot reproduce an app’s custom login screen automatically. If the service requires approval in a proprietary app, confirm that it supports native Windows authentication before removing that app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Certificates and smart cards

EAP-TLS and related enterprise configurations use a client certificate rather than a reusable password. The device may need a user or machine certificate, a trusted root certificate, smart-card middleware or a profile deployed by management software. If the certificate is missing, expired, issued to the wrong identity or not trusted by the server, the profile can fail even when the server address is correct.

Connecting, disconnecting and checking the profile

Use the VPN page to see whether the profile is connected, review its advanced options or remove it. The taskbar network panel provides a quicker connect and disconnect control. If a connection drops, note whether Windows reports an authentication error, a server-unreachable error or a protocol negotiation failure; each points to a different fix.

  • Connected: Windows has established the tunnel according to the profile. Whether all traffic or only selected networks use it depends on routing and administrator policy.
  • Saved but unable to connect: The profile syntax is valid, but the endpoint, protocol, credentials, certificate or server availability may be wrong.
  • Connected but an internal resource is unreachable: The VPN may require organization-specific DNS, routes, traffic filters or full-tunnel policy that was not included in a manually created profile.

Troubleshooting common failures

“The connection attempt failed” or the server cannot be reached

  • Recheck the server name or address character by character.
  • Verify that the gateway is online and that your account is permitted to connect.
  • Confirm the VPN type with the provider; switching between IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP and PPTP without documentation is unlikely to solve a server mismatch.
  • Try another network only as a diagnostic step. A hotel, school or public Wi-Fi network may block VPN traffic, while the VPN server itself remains healthy.

Authentication errors

  • Confirm the username format, such as whether a domain prefix is required.
  • Check whether the account password or one-time code has expired.
  • Ensure that the selected sign-in type matches the server’s EAP or certificate requirement.
  • For certificates, verify that the certificate is installed for the correct user or device, is within its validity period and chains to a trusted root.

L2TP/IPsec-specific failures

L2TP/IPsec requires matching IPsec settings on both ends. If the administrator supplied a pre-shared key, certificate or other IPsec requirement, it must be configured exactly as instructed. A username and password alone may not satisfy the gateway.

The tunnel connects but websites or work resources fail

Ask the administrator whether the profile should use split tunneling or force tunneling, and whether organization DNS servers or routes are required. A manually created profile may establish encryption without receiving all of the traffic filters and routes that a managed profile would apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeated disconnects

Check whether the network changes between Wi-Fi and wired connections, whether the device sleeps, and whether the server expects a persistent tunnel. Enterprise profiles can use automatic triggers or LockDown policies, but those controls must be deployed deliberately rather than improvised in a consumer profile.

Built-in Windows VPN versus a provider’s app

Capability Windows built-in client Third-party client
Protocol compatibility Native IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, SSTP and Automatic. May add proprietary protocols or provider-specific plug-ins.
Setup Manual entry of server, type and authentication fields. Often imports account settings or configures profiles after sign-in.
Authentication Supports compatible EAP methods, passwords, certificates and smart cards. Can provide custom login, device approval or multi-factor flows.
Automatic connection Available through Windows and managed policy features, but not every provider’s app-level trigger is replicated. May connect automatically by app, network or provider rule.
Per-app routing and obfuscation Not a general replacement for provider-specific app routing or obfuscation features. May include those features when the provider implements them.
Kill switch or lockdown Enterprise LockDown VPN can keep an IKEv2 tunnel active and block outbound traffic when it is unavailable. Consumer apps may expose a simpler toggle, but behavior differs by product.
Enterprise management Supports policy-based profiles, traffic filters, triggers and VPN profile XML through Intune/VPNv2 CSP. Depends on the vendor’s management platform.

Windows’ client is usually the better fit when you already have a standard endpoint and want fewer resident applications, or when an organization manages profiles centrally. An app is the practical choice when the provider’s service depends on a proprietary protocol, custom plug-in, bundled account flow, app-level routing or provider-specific obfuscation.

When a third-party client is still required

Microsoft documents UWP VPN plug-ins and gives Pulse Secure, Cisco AnyConnect, F5 Access, SonicWall Mobile Connect and Check Point Capsule as examples of clients that add vendor-specific integration. Those plug-ins are not interchangeable with a manually entered native profile.

Keep the provider’s client when its documentation says the service is app-only, when it supplies no native server and protocol settings, or when features such as per-application routing, proprietary obfuscation, custom device posture checks or an in-app authentication approval are essential. Confirm compatibility before uninstalling the app; deleting it first can leave you without the information needed to recreate the connection.

Enterprise controls: split tunneling, triggers and traffic filters

Organizations can deploy more than a basic on-demand profile. Microsoft’s VPN technical guidance covers:

  • Split tunneling: only selected destinations use the VPN, while other traffic uses the local connection.
  • Force tunneling: traffic is sent through the VPN instead of directly to the local network, subject to the organization’s routing design.
  • Automatic triggers: a profile can start when a specified app, domain or network condition is detected.
  • Traffic filters: administrators can constrain which traffic is allowed through a profile.
  • Managed profile deployment: Intune and the VPNv2 configuration service provider can deliver profile XML and policy at scale.

These are administrator-managed controls. A user-created profile normally cannot reproduce an organization’s complete routing, DNS, compliance and access policy.

LockDown VPN: a strict enterprise mode

Windows documents LockDown VPN for built-in IKEv2. When configured by an administrator, it attempts to keep the tunnel active, prevents the user from disconnecting or modifying the profile, and blocks outbound traffic whenever the VPN is unavailable. This behavior is useful for devices that must never send protected traffic directly to the internet.

LockDown is not a casual replacement for a consumer kill switch. A wrong server, expired certificate or unavailable gateway can leave the computer with no network access. Test the policy with a recovery procedure and administrator access before deploying it broadly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows edition and support limits

The Microsoft consumer support procedure states that this VPN feature is unavailable in Windows 11 SE. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so new instructions and security expectations should target a supported Windows 11 edition. Enterprise policy capabilities can also vary by edition, licensing and management configuration.

If your device is on Windows 11 SE or an unsupported Windows release, check the edition-specific documentation and your organization’s support policy before attempting to reproduce these steps.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Ask the provider or IT administrator for a native Windows server address, protocol and authentication method.
  2. Confirm that the endpoint supports IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, PPTP or a documented Automatic configuration.
  3. Check whether certificates, smart cards, trusted roots, one-time passwords or domain formats are required.
  4. Create the profile at Settings > Network & internet > VPN > Add VPN with Windows (built-in) selected.
  5. Connect and verify both the Windows status and access to the resources you actually need.
  6. Keep the provider’s app if it requires a proprietary protocol, plug-in, custom login, app-level routing or obfuscation.
  7. For business devices, have an administrator define routing, triggers, filters and any LockDown policy instead of relying on a hand-built profile.
