There are now two practical ways to use an existing WhatsApp account on an iPad: install the official WhatsApp Messenger app if it appears in your regional App Store, or open WhatsApp Web in a browser and link the iPad to WhatsApp on your phone. The U.S. App Store listing reviewed on August 18, 2026, identifies WhatsApp Messenger as compatible with iPad and says iPads can be linked as additional devices. Availability and requirements can differ by country, iPad model, and iPadOS version.
Choose between the iPad app and WhatsApp Web

For most people, install the official app when it is offered. Use WhatsApp Web when you do not want an installation, the iPad is managed, or the app is unavailable. Avoid unofficial wrapper apps that ask for WhatsApp credentials or QR codes.
Use WhatsApp Web in Safari
What you need
- An existing WhatsApp account on an iPhone or Android phone.
- The phone available to authorize the first link.
- Internet access on the iPad and a reasonably current Safari, Chrome, or other supported browser.
- Permission to unlock the phone and approve the linking request.
The iPad does not need its own WhatsApp phone number for a linked session. A cellular data plan only supplies internet access; it does not automatically create a separate WhatsApp account.
Open the linking screen on the iPad
- Open Safari and visit https://web.whatsapp.com/.
- If you see a mobile landing page instead of a QR code or linking screen, open Safari’s page menu and choose Request Desktop Website.
- Reload the page if necessary and leave the QR code visible.
Authorize the iPad from your phone
- Open WhatsApp on the phone.
- On iPhone, open Settings. On Android, open the three-dot menu.
- Tap Linked Devices, then Link a Device.
- Unlock the phone if prompted.
- Scan the QR code on the iPad, or complete the linking flow shown by WhatsApp.
- Wait for your conversations to load in the browser.
The iPad should then provide access to your WhatsApp chats and support message, photo, video, and document sharing. Browser features such as calling, notifications, camera access, and microphone access can vary with the browser, iPadOS release, permissions, and WhatsApp’s current web implementation.

Install the official WhatsApp iPad app
- Open the iPad’s App Store.
- Search for WhatsApp Messenger.
- Confirm that the developer is WhatsApp Inc., then install it.
- Open the app and follow its instructions to link the iPad to your existing account.
- If prompted, use Linked Devices → Link a Device in WhatsApp on your phone and complete the QR-code or confirmation step.
- Allow notifications, microphone, camera, photos, or contacts only for features you intend to use.
The U.S. listing describes the app as free and compatible with iPad, with messaging, voice and video calls, group chats, document sharing, and linked-device support. Check your own country’s App Store immediately before installation because regional availability and operating-system requirements are not guaranteed to match the U.S. page: WhatsApp Messenger on the U.S. App Store.
Fix common setup problems
Safari shows a mobile page
- Open Safari’s page menu and select Request Desktop Website.
- Reload web.whatsapp.com.
- If the linking screen still does not appear, try a private tab temporarily, clear the site’s data, or use Chrome or another current browser.

The QR code will not scan
- Increase the iPad’s screen brightness.
- Clean the phone’s camera lens and hold it parallel to the iPad.
- Enlarge the QR code if the page allows it.
- Reload WhatsApp Web to generate a fresh code.
- Update WhatsApp on the phone and confirm that the phone is online.
- Use Linked Devices → Link a Device; do not try to register the iPad as a new account.
The iPad asks to be linked repeatedly
Private Browsing, cleared Safari cookies, an expired session, or a device removed from the phone can all force a new link. On the phone, open Linked Devices and remove the old iPad entry if present. Reload WhatsApp Web and link it again, then avoid Private Browsing and automatic clearing of WhatsApp website data. See the reported QR-code loop in the Apple Community discussion.
Chats do not load after linking
- Check the iPad and phone’s internet connections.
- Reload the page or restart the app.
- Update WhatsApp on the phone and iPadOS when updates are available.
- Check Linked Devices on the phone to verify that the iPad session is still listed.
The app is missing from the App Store
Verify that you searched for WhatsApp Messenger and that the developer is WhatsApp Inc. A different App Store country, outdated iPad software, device restrictions, or account-management policies can prevent the listing from appearing. The U.S. listing confirms iPad compatibility, not universal availability: check the listing in your region.

An older iPad cannot load WhatsApp Web
Older iPads may lack browser features or security support required by the current site. Update iPadOS if possible, try another current browser supported by the iPad, install the official app if the App Store offers it, or use WhatsApp on a computer or newer tablet. A linked iPad uses the existing phone account, so you normally need access to that phone account for initial authorization and account management. The phone does not have to remain open beside the iPad continuously, but reconnection and session expiry depend on WhatsApp’s current policies and device connectivity.

Creating a separate account is different: it requires registration with a phone number that can receive WhatsApp’s verification code or call. A Wi-Fi-only or cellular iPad does not automatically provide such a number, and an iPad data-plan number should not be assumed to work as a separate WhatsApp identity.
Protect the linked account and log out
- Link only an iPad you control, and protect it with an iPad passcode.
- On a shared iPad, review notification previews so messages are not exposed on the lock screen.
- Never photograph or share the QR code; it is part of the account-linking process.
- Avoid third-party helper apps that request WhatsApp credentials, QR codes, or unnecessary permissions.
- To disconnect remotely, open WhatsApp on the phone, go to Linked Devices, select the iPad, and tap Log out.
- If the iPad is lost, sold, or given to someone else, remove it from Linked Devices immediately.
WhatsApp’s App Store listing advertises end-to-end encrypted messaging and calls, but privacy disclosures and feature behavior can change. Review the current permissions and privacy information shown for your app and region.

Which method should you use?
Choose the official WhatsApp iPad app for regular use, notifications, and the most app-like experience when it is available in your regional App Store. Choose WhatsApp Web in Safari for quick browser access, a managed iPad, or a situation where the app cannot be installed. In either case, link the iPad through Linked Devices on the phone rather than attempting to create an unnecessary new account.
