Waze can do more than draw a route and announce turns. Its less-obvious tools let you describe hazards by voice, receive warnings for road features such as sharp curves and lane endings, adjust navigation to your driving history, keep directions visible on a locked Android phone, and request roadside help.
These features improve awareness and convenience, but they do not guarantee the safest or fastest route, an accurate alert, or an available rescuer. Waze relies on changing, crowd-sourced information and a data connection for full operation. Availability also varies by country, platform, and the map coverage in your area.

What Waze’s hidden features actually provide
Waze’s official documentation describes a connected navigation service that uses current reports, map data, and (where supported) your previous drives. The app cannot promise that a suggested route is objectively fastest or safest, and no alert should replace watching the road, obeying signs, or following emergency instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The most useful features fall into five groups:
- Conversational reporting: describe traffic, police sightings, or hazards without navigating a long menu.
- Road-feature alerts: receive warnings for physical or geometric features that can require extra attention, not just congestion.
- Personalized navigation: let Waze use drive history and route choices to tune estimated arrival times and suggestions.
- Locked-screen navigation: keep route guidance visible on an Android phone while the device is locked.
- Roadside help: ask nearby Wazers for assistance, contact a local provider where available, or call emergency services.
Full operation depends on an internet connection. Waze says it cannot locate you or navigate a route without a connection, and an intermittent connection can make traffic and hazard information unreliable. Reports cannot be sent when the app cannot reach Waze’s servers. See Waze’s About page for its connectivity explanation.

Use Talk to report for hands-free event reporting
Talk to report is designed for situations where a spoken description is more practical than selecting several menu items. Waze’s own wording is: “Tell Waze what you see during your drive and help other drivers stay safe.”
Set it up on a phone
- Open Waze before you start driving.
- Tap the menu and open Settings.
- Choose Voice and sound.
- Open Talk to report and enable the feature.
- Allow microphone access if your phone asks for it. Without that permission, spoken reporting cannot work.
During navigation, tap the Talk to report icon and describe the situation in ordinary language, such as “heavy traffic,” “a car on the shoulder,” or “police officer.” Use the control only when doing so is safe and legal; a passenger can make the report, or you can wait until stopped.
The feature may not be offered in every country. Waze also documents different setup behavior for dashboard integrations: Android Auto has its own reporting options, while CarPlay uses the Talk to report setting configured on the connected phone. Waze states that Talk to report is not supported on Android Automotive, the version of Android built into some vehicles.
Use the regular report menu when speech is unsuitable
Waze’s reporting controls also include separate police and hazard categories. Hazard examples include roadworks, a vehicle on the shoulder, a broken traffic light, a pothole, and an object in the roadway. Police reports can include choices such as mobile camera, hidden, or other side, although the available choices differ by country.
Report only events you are seeing in real time and that are close to your position. A report is not a permanent annotation: if you pass an alert and the event is gone, tap Not there to help reduce the time it remains visible to other drivers. Do not report something based on an old message, a social-media post, or a memory from an earlier trip.

Turn on alerts for road features, not just traffic
Many drivers enable congestion warnings and never explore the separate road-feature controls. These alerts can draw attention to the design of the road ahead, including features that may require a lower speed, a lane change, or a longer scan for pedestrians and cross traffic.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enable map, voice, and pop-up alerts
- Open Waze and tap the menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Alerts and reports.
- Tap Reports, then Road features.
- For each feature you care about, choose whether it appears on the map and whether it produces an in-drive voice alert or pop-up.
The documented road-feature list includes:
- Railway crossings
- Traffic lights
- Toll booths
- Speed bumps
- Sharp curves
- Speed-limit changes
- Complex intersections
- Merging areas
- School safety zones
- Lane endings
- Raised pedestrian crossings
- High-speed crossings
- Shoulder endings
- Narrow bridges
Waze’s road-feature alert documentation says the underlying features come from partner and map-editor reports. Coverage is therefore uneven: a road can contain a feature without a corresponding alert. School safety-zone warnings are generally active only during specified hours on school days, so their absence at another time is not evidence that the zone is gone.
Choose alerts that add information instead of noise
Voice warnings are useful when you want to keep your eyes on the roadway; map-only indicators are less intrusive when frequent announcements would distract you. Start with features that matter on your regular roads—such as lane endings, sharp curves, railway crossings, and school zones—then adjust after a few drives. An alert is a prompt to look and assess, not an instruction to brake suddenly or change lanes without checking mirrors.
Let Waze learn your route preferences—or turn personalization off
Waze can use previous drives and route selections to personalize estimated arrival times and route suggestions. For example, a driver who routinely avoids a particular street or favors a familiar highway entrance may see suggestions shaped by that pattern. This is a reflection of observed behavior, not proof that the selected route is objectively optimal.

Enable or disable personalized navigation
- Open Waze and go to Settings.
- Tap Navigation.
- Choose Personalization.
- Open Personalized navigation.
- Use the available controls to turn personalized ETAs and route suggestions on or off.
Waze notes that personalization may not be supported in every area and may require enough drive history before it has useful information. A newly installed app or a driver who rarely repeats routes may see little effect at first.
Remove the history that informs personalization
Deleting drives from your navigation history removes those drives from the data used to personalize ETAs and routes. This is useful if a temporary detour, a vacation, or an unusual commute no longer represents how you normally drive. Deleting history does not turn Waze into an offline navigator or erase the need for current traffic data.
See Waze’s personalized-navigation help page for the current controls and regional qualifications.
Keep directions visible when an Android phone is locked
On Android phones, Waze says lock-screen navigation is enabled by default. With it active, turn instructions and the route can remain visible after the phone locks, reducing the need to unlock the device just to see the next direction.
Turn lock-screen navigation off
- Open Waze.
- Tap the menu and choose Settings.
- Open General.
- Tap Lock screen navigation.
- Switch the setting off if you do not want navigation displayed while the phone is locked.
Lock-screen navigation does not expose every Waze control. You must unlock the phone to use all features, including many reporting and destination actions. Waze states that this feature is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive, or CarPlay. In those environments, the vehicle display follows its own integration behavior rather than mirroring the Android phone lock screen.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Request roadside help without mistaking it for guaranteed dispatch
Waze’s roadside-help menu is an escalation option when the car or a passenger needs assistance. Depending on location, it can let you request help from fellow Wazers, contact a local third-party roadside professional, or call emergency services.
What a fellow-Wazer request can cover
The documented request categories include running out of fuel, a flat tire, a battery problem, a medical issue, or another need. The help icon remains live for 30 minutes after the request, according to Waze’s help page. Submit the request only when you are near your car so people can find the correct vehicle and location.
Understand provider and platform limits
Professional roadside providers are independent third parties, and their availability varies by country. Waze does not promise that a provider serves your road, accepts the request, quotes a particular price, or arrives within a particular time. If anyone is in immediate danger, use the emergency-services option or your local emergency number instead of waiting for an in-app response.

Phone, Android Auto, CarPlay, and Android Automotive are not interchangeable
A common source of confusion is assuming that a feature available in the phone app automatically appears on the car’s screen. Waze documents separate behavior for several tools:
- Phone app: the settings paths in this guide apply directly. Microphone permission, lock-screen behavior, reporting, and roadside-help controls are managed on the phone.
- Android Auto: Talk to report has its own setup under Android Auto’s reporting options. Lock-screen navigation and roadside help are not supported there.
- CarPlay: Talk to report uses the setting on the connected iPhone. Lock-screen navigation and roadside help are not supported there.
- Android Automotive: Waze states that Talk to report, lock-screen navigation, and roadside help are not supported. This is distinct from an Android phone connected to Android Auto.
Dashboard availability can also depend on the vehicle, the country, the Waze version, and map coverage. If a control is missing from the car display, check the phone app and Waze’s Help index rather than assuming the feature has been removed.
Build a safer setup before you pull away
- Connect the phone: verify mobile data or a reliable connection before starting navigation.
- Set the destination while parked: choose the route, voice volume, alert types, and personalization preference before moving.
- Position the device: use a stable car mount that keeps the display in your peripheral view without blocking the windshield or controls. A mount is a positioning accessory, not a guarantee of safer driving.
- Check permissions: confirm microphone access if you plan to use Talk to report.
- Choose alert density: enable road-feature warnings that help on your roads and disable announcements that create distraction.
- Prepare for dead zones: know that an interruption can prevent route calculation and reporting. Keep an independent way to contact emergency services.
- Do not interact while moving: let a passenger report, or stop in a legal, safe location.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The Talk to report icon is missing
- Confirm that Talk to report is enabled at Settings → Voice and sound → Talk to report.
- Check microphone permission in the phone’s operating-system settings.
- Verify that the feature is available in your country.
- If you are using Android Auto, look in its reporting options rather than the phone’s in-car screen.
- If the vehicle uses Android Automotive, the feature is not supported.
A road feature is not announced
- Recheck Settings → Alerts and reports → Reports → Road features and confirm both the desired alert type and its voice or pop-up behavior.
- Remember that coverage depends on partner and map-editor reports.
- Check whether the feature is time-dependent, as with school safety zones.
- Continue driving defensively: no alert is evidence that the road is clear.
Personalized routes do not seem to change
- Open Settings → Navigation → Personalization → Personalized navigation and verify the controls.
- Allow for the possibility that Waze needs more repeated drive history.
- Check whether personalization is supported in your location.
- Do not expect an immediate or consistently faster route; the system is learning preferences, not promising an optimization result.
Directions disappear when the phone locks
- On Android, check Settings → General → Lock screen navigation.
- Remember that the feature is for an Android phone and is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive, or CarPlay.
- Unlock the phone when you need controls beyond the visible route guidance.
A report or roadside request will not send
- Check the data connection. Waze says reports require contact with its servers.
- Move to a safe location before retrying; do not handle the phone in traffic.
- For roadside help, stay near the vehicle and confirm that you are using the phone app rather than an unsupported car-display mode.
- For immediate danger, call emergency services directly.
How to judge a Waze alert while driving
Use every alert as one input in a three-part check: what Waze reports, what signs and signals show, and what you can see through the windshield and mirrors. A crowd-sourced report can be stale, incorrectly categorized, or positioned on the opposite side of a divided road. A missing report can simply reflect limited coverage. Slow down when conditions warrant it, keep a safe following distance, and never make a sudden maneuver solely because an app spoke.
