To turn on Voice Isolation, open a supported call or recording app, swipe down from the iPhone’s top-right corner to open Control Center, tap the active app’s controls, then choose Voice Isolation in the microphone or audio/video mode controls. The setting applies to that app and remains selected there until you change it. Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient sounds, but Apple does not publish a quantified noise-reduction result.

Choose Voice Isolation.
Apple describes the mode as prioritizing your voice and blocking ambient noises. It is an app-specific setting, not a single switch for the entire iPhone; changing it in one app does not change it in every other app. Apple’s Mic Mode instructions explain the available controls.
Check iOS and app compatibility
The required iOS version depends on what you are doing. Apple lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later among supported devices, but third-party apps must also support and expose the controls.

If the control is missing, first check the iOS version for your activity, then confirm that the app supports Mic Modes. A third-party app is not guaranteed to offer Voice Isolation simply because it can place calls or record audio.

Choose the microphone mode that fits the situation
- Voice Isolation: prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient sounds. Use it when surrounding noise is unwanted.
- Wide Spectrum: leaves ambient sound unfiltered. Choose it when music or other voices around you should be captured along with your voice. It is available for FaceTime and certain third-party calls, but not for phone calls.
- Standard: uses standard voice processing.
- Automatic: available with iOS 18 or later. Apple’s example is that it uses Voice Isolation for calls using the receiver and Standard for speakerphone calls.
These are operating modes, not a guarantee of a particular clarity or noise-reduction result; Apple’s documentation does not give a measured improvement figure. With iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1, supported wired microphones and devices such as EarPods with USB-C also have an optional input-gain control. That control is separate from Voice Isolation and is not required to use it. Apple’s support page describes the modes and supported input controls.

Know the Local Capture exception
For a supported app or website recording, open Control Center, tap the app or browser controls, and select Voice Isolation. However, Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum do not apply to a Local Capture recording. Apple says you can edit a Local Capture recording afterward to adjust its sound. These recordings are saved in Files, by default in Downloads, unless you specify another location. See the iOS 27 iPhone User Guide for the Local Capture distinction.

Voice Isolation changes microphone processing; it does not turn on call recording. Apple says call recording availability varies by country and region. When recording is available, both participants hear an audio notice when it starts, and Apple instructs users to ensure the other participant is willing to be recorded. Recordings are saved in the Call Recordings folder in Notes. Transcripts are available only in select regions and languages. Details are in Apple’s iOS 27 guide to recording and transcribing calls.
