You can use vMix to play a planned sequence of prerecorded videos and send the resulting program to YouTube Live with a stream key. Build the sequence with vMix PlayList or a List Input, connect vMix to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio, then test and monitor the broadcast. This is a locally operated setup: vMix must keep running, and a genuinely always-on channel needs a plan for interruptions and restarts.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled.
- vMix installed on a computer that can play your media and send a live feed over your internet connection.
- The prerecorded video and audio files you intend to use, accessible to vMix.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio Live Control Room.
- A person or operational plan to monitor the stream and respond if the computer, vMix, internet connection, or YouTube feed stops.

Choose the right vMix playlist tool
vMix has two related ways to organize prerecorded material, but they do different jobs. The vMix feature overview describes PlayList automation for multiple inputs, including per-item start time, duration, and transition. A List Input instead groups multiple media files into a single input; it can load video, audio, and M3U playlist files. vMix’s official training videos cover both features.

Neither description establishes every end-of-file, repeat, missing-file, or gapless-transition behavior for every vMix release. Test the sequence in the version you have installed rather than assuming a loop or transition setting behaves a particular way.

Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, select an existing stream key or create one. YouTube allows a custom key for reuse.
- Copy both the stream URL (or server URL) and the stream key. The URL identifies the destination; the key identifies the stream receiving your encoder’s feed. Follow YouTube’s stream settings guide if the controls differ from what you see.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public configuration files, or tutorial recordings. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in vMix.
Check which protocol you are using before copying the URL. YouTube supports RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL; its RTMPS URL is available in Live Control Room, and the lock control may need to be opened because the ordinary RTMP URL is shown by default. Use the URL that matches the protocol your installed vMix version supports; do not pair an RTMPS setting with an RTMP address or vice versa. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. Support behavior can vary by vMix release, so check that release’s help.
Build the prerecorded sequence in vMix
- Add the video files you want to play as vMix inputs. Confirm that each file opens and that its audio and picture are correct before putting it in the sequence.
- For an automated show across separate inputs, open vMix PlayList and arrange the inputs. Set the per-item start time, duration, and transition that suit your programme.
- If you prefer one grouped input containing several media files, create a List Input and load the relevant video, audio, or M3U files into it.
- Play through the planned sequence before going live. Check how each item starts and ends, that transitions are acceptable, and that audio continues as intended. The exact repeat and end-of-item behavior is not established for every version, so verify it in your own vMix setup.

Connect vMix to YouTube with the key
- Open vMix’s streaming settings or YouTube Live destination flow, if available in your installed version.
- Choose the relevant destination and enter the YouTube stream URL/server address and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Use the field names and controls provided by your version; labels and menu positions can vary.
- Confirm the selected protocol matches the URL you copied. If you are using RTMPS, first verify that your vMix release supports the protocol and use YouTube’s RTMPS URL.
- Start the vMix stream and wait for YouTube Live Control Room to receive it. Check the preview there before making the broadcast public or announcing it.

Test the channel before relying on it
- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then confirm that Live Control Room shows the incoming feed and preview.
- Check the event’s accessibility and viewing page, and open the watch page on desktop and mobile.
- Listen to the stream and watch the picture through transitions and file changes. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring audio and video; see its live-streaming tips.
- Run the sequence long enough to see the behaviors that matter to your channel, including item endings, transitions, and any planned repeat or restart. Do not assume a brief successful preview proves long-term continuity.
- Decide who will notice a stopped or degraded feed and how they will respond. Include the computer, vMix, local power, internet connection, stream key, and YouTube service in the recovery plan.
Plan for long-running broadcasts
An encoder starting successfully does not guarantee a continuous 24/7 broadcast. Local vMix operation depends on the computer and connection staying available, while platform or credential problems can also interrupt delivery. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; an unattended workflow therefore needs a responsible operator or a monitoring and recovery plan.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that longer streams are all saved, or that one broadcast can run indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current duration and archive guidance and plan any broadcast segmentation or restart behavior against the rules in effect for your channel: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Before scheduling prerecorded content, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to stream every video and audio track. A stream key only authorizes the encoder to send a feed; it does not grant permission to use the content. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and channel rules for your material, including any restrictions that may affect live eligibility. Avoid treating a playlist as a workaround for copyright or reused-content policies.

Can I reuse the same YouTube stream key in vMix?
YouTube allows you to create a custom stream key for reuse. Keep it private, and update vMix if you reset it.
Does a successful Live Control Room preview prove a stream can stay live indefinitely?
No. A preview confirms the incoming feed at that time. YouTube’s guidance about automatic archives applies to streams under 12 hours and does not establish indefinite broadcast continuity.
