You can use VLC to play an internet radio feed, but the documented workflow does not establish VLC as a direct YouTube Live publisher. The reliable setup is VLC for receiving the station audio, plus a YouTube-compatible encoder for sending audio and a video image to YouTube. The exact way to route VLC’s audio into that encoder depends on your operating system and software; do not assume that pasting YouTube’s stream URL into VLC will work.

What you need—and what VLC does

Think of the job as two separate steps: VLC opens the station’s internet audio feed, then an encoder packages audio with video and sends the live event to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. VideoLAN’s published Streaming Features list documents outputs such as RTP/UDP, RTSP, HTTP and MMSH, but does not list RTMP or RTMPS. That list is not a version-specific guide and does not prove that no build or add-on can ever publish to YouTube; it does mean the reviewed documentation does not establish a direct VLC-to-YouTube procedure.

  • A station feed URL that VLC can open. A station’s homepage or embedded web player may not itself be the audio feed.
  • A computer that can play the feed and run an encoder at the same time.
  • Streaming software that supports YouTube’s ingestion settings and can receive audio playing through VLC on your operating system.
  • A still image or other video source for the encoder. The YouTube encoder workflow sends video with audio, even when the content is primarily radio.
  • Permission to rebroadcast the station’s audio, including music, for the intended territories and any replay you keep.

YouTube’s live-streaming tips say expensive equipment is not required. A radio tuner, capture card, or special cable is not inherently needed to relay a network audio feed in software.

Check channel eligibility and broadcast rights first

Confirm YouTube live access

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s access in YouTube Studio before preparing the show; an encoder cannot bypass a channel restriction.

Get permission for this specific feed

A publicly playable station URL is not proof that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Whether a particular station’s permissions cover a YouTube livestream, all intended territories, and an archived replay depends on that station’s terms and the rights in its programming. If that is unclear, ask the station or rights holders before broadcasting.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even a creator who has a license may need the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A claim can also arrive on an archived stream after the live event ends. Unlisted visibility does not make copyrighted audio safe to rebroadcast.

Set up the YouTube event and encoder

  1. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s current prompts for the event type and visibility.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube provides these for the encoder. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
  3. Choose an encoder that meets YouTube’s ingest requirements. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video encodings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The encoder—not VLC’s station playback setting—must send the stream to YouTube using the event’s server URL and key.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Set audio for stereo. YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate for stereo. Select AAC or MP3, both listed in its encoder guidance.
  6. Use constant bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR. Choose a video resolution and bitrate the encoder can sustain; a static image does not need an unnecessarily high video resolution. The settings above are YouTube encoder recommendations, not VLC settings.

YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps, but a still-image radio stream does not need a high frame rate just because the service permits it. Avoid treating a maximum capability as a target. The reviewed guidance does not establish a single appropriate video bitrate for every resolution and connection, so use the applicable YouTube setting recommendations in the encoder rather than guessing.

Open the station feed in VLC and route its audio

  1. Find the feed, not just the station page. Use the station’s published listen link or direct stream address, if it provides one. A website may launch a player without exposing a URL that VLC can open. If VLC cannot open the address, check the station’s help or contact it for a supported stream link rather than assuming the homepage is the feed.
  2. Open the feed in VLC. Use the network-stream option in your installed VLC version and enter the feed address. Menu wording varies by version and platform, so use VLC’s current interface rather than relying on a menu path that may not match your build.
  3. Choose a supported audio route into the encoder. Configure the encoder to receive the audio VLC is playing, using an audio capture or virtual-device method supported by your operating system and encoder. The exact device name and controls differ across platforms and releases; the available documentation does not validate a particular capture setup. Do not select an unrelated microphone or assume the encoder can hear VLC automatically.
  4. Add a picture. In the encoder, supply a still image or another suitable video source along with the captured audio. Check that the encoder preview shows the intended picture and that the station audio is audible.
  5. Start sending to YouTube. Start the encoder output with the correct server URL and stream key. Wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health information; if the event requires a separate manual Go Live action, use the control shown there.

Test, monitor, and end the stream

Before making an event public, run a test with audio and motion comparable to the intended stream. Listen for a continuous, intelligible station feed in the encoder preview and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. A preview alone does not confirm that you have permission to broadcast the content.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube health indicators during the event; YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality.
  • If you change the VLC source or audio route, check the encoder preview again before relying on the stream.
  • When finished, stop the encoder feed and confirm the event has ended in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is not a guarantee that an archive will be available or free of later copyright claims.

Troubleshooting: find which link in the chain failed

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC does not play the station The address may be a website or player page rather than a media-feed URL, or the station may not expose a feed VLC can open. Try the station’s actual listen/feed address and check its instructions. Do not treat a page URL as a confirmed stream URL.
The encoder preview has video but no radio audio The encoder may not be receiving VLC’s playback device, or it may be listening to the wrong audio source. Check the encoder’s selected audio input and your operating system’s audio-routing setup. Confirm that VLC itself is playing before changing the YouTube destination.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The encoder may not be sending, the server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the event may not be in the expected state. Compare the encoder destination with the values shown for that event in Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube is waiting for the feed or for a manual Go Live action.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops The encoder may not sustain its selected output, or the available upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable. Review YouTube’s health messages and lower the encoder’s output demands if needed. Test again with comparable audio and movement before a public event.
The stream is interrupted after it starts YouTube may have identified third-party content, or another ingest or connection issue may have occurred. Check YouTube’s notice and stream-health information. For a rights notice, resolve the permissions or Content ID allowlisting issue with the relevant rights holder; do not assume that public access or an existing license alone prevents interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is an option for a different use case: it streams uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube, not a live internet-radio feed being played by VLC. If you have a recording you are permitted to rebroadcast and want that uploaded video looped, the setup is: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot is one flat price for the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day if your source is a recording rather than a live station feed.
