How to Use VLC to Play Podcast Episodes on a Continuous YouTube Live Stream

To play podcast episodes in a repeating YouTube Live stream, use OBS Studio as the encoder and add the episodes as a playlist through OBS’s VLC Video source. VLC supplies the media playback; OBS sends the stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. In the VLC Video source settings, turn on Loop Playlist and leave Shuffle Playlist off if episodes should play in order.

Choose the right playback method

Method Best for What to know
OBS VLC Video source Playing multiple local episode files in sequence, then repeating them Requires VLC installed alongside OBS. Set the playlist order and loop behavior in the source properties.
OBS Media Source Repeating one local episode file Use its Loop setting. It is simpler for one file, rather than a multi-file playlist.
VLC VideoLAN Manager (VLM) Broadcasting a VLC playlist to VLC receivers on a local network VideoLAN’s documented example sends output over HTTP to a local-network receiver. That is not the YouTube Live encoder URL-and-key workflow.

For a YouTube broadcast, the practical route is OBS plus a VLC Video source—not VLC’s documented local HTTP broadcast example.

Before you start

  • Get permission for every element. Confirm you may publicly rebroadcast each episode and any music, artwork, clips, or other material it contains. Being able to listen to or download a podcast does not itself grant live rebroadcast rights. Rights can depend on the title, territory, and contract.
  • Check the files. Play the recordings locally first and confirm the intended episode order. Keep the files available on the computer running OBS.
  • Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the applications’ bitness matches.
  • Plan a visual for an audio-first show. Add a suitable rights-cleared still image, title card, or other visual to the OBS scene. Check that it appears in the preview and that audio meters move when playback begins.
  • Keep the local system available. With this method, OBS, VLC, the media files, the computer, and the network all need to remain available while the broadcast runs. A looping playlist repeats media; it does not keep the encoder or internet connection running by itself.

Set up a podcast playlist in OBS

  1. Open OBS and make a scene. In the Scenes panel, create or select a scene for the podcast stream. Add the visual elements you want viewers to see.
  2. Add the VLC playlist source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video Source, and create a new source. If VLC Video Source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its 32- or 64-bit version matches OBS.
  3. Add the episode files in order. Open the VLC Video source properties and add the local files in the sequence you want them played. Arrange the list before going live; the playlist order determines the sequence.
  4. Set repeat and order behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart from the beginning after the last listed file finishes. Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled to preserve the sequence. Enable shuffle only if a randomized episode order is intentional.
  5. Check picture and sound. Confirm the source is visible in the OBS canvas. Start or preview playback and watch the audio meters. If your scene uses a still image, make sure it remains visible while the episode audio plays.
  6. Save and test before the event. Let playback run long enough to confirm that the source starts and that audio is reaching OBS. For a playlist intended to repeat, check the loop setting and episode list rather than assuming that the stream encoder will recover from interruptions.

For a single episode instead

Add an OBS Media Source, select the local file, and enable its Loop setting. OBS documents common local audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as common video containers. Use the VLC Video source when you need a multi-file playlist.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select the live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the ingest details. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as sensitive: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
  3. Use the encoder settings YouTube supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the current guidance in YouTube Studio and the options actually available in your encoder; do not assume a setting exists if OBS does not show it.
  4. Start OBS streaming and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm the correct scene is being sent, the picture and audio look right, and the Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream.
  5. Make a scheduled event live when ready. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then start the event there. Test ahead of the planned broadcast rather than discovering a playlist, key, or connection issue at showtime.

What “continuous” means in this setup

Loop Playlist controls what happens when OBS reaches the end of its media queue: it starts the playlist again. It is not a promise of uninterrupted service. A local workflow can stop if the computer sleeps or shuts down, OBS or VLC closes, files become unavailable, or the internet connection fails. Plan to keep the computer awake, keep the source files accessible, and monitor the broadcast if continuity matters.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS, and verify that 64-bit OBS is paired with 64-bit VLC (or that both applications use the same bitness).
  • Episodes play once and stop: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. For a single file in Media Source, enable Loop instead.
  • Episodes play in an unexpected order: Check the file order in the source playlist and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
  • There is no sound in the stream: Check that the file plays locally, the OBS audio meter responds, and the VLC source is present and active in the scene. Then check the YouTube preview before starting the event.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from the correct Live Control Room event. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls.
  • The stream ends despite looping: Looping only repeats the media. Check whether the computer, OBS, VLC, source files, or network stopped being available; restart the encoder and restore the YouTube event as needed.
  • The event preview appears but the broadcast is not live: For a scheduled event, use the Live Control Room’s start/go-live control after confirming the preview.
