YouTube expects an encoder-compatible stream; a practical DIY arrangement is to use VLC for playback, an RTMPS-capable encoder such as OBS to compose and send the feed, and YouTube Live Control Room to provide the stream URL and key. The exact VLC-to-OBS playlist setup varies by operating system and app version, so test it before relying on it for a long-running promotion.
How the VLC-to-YouTube setup fits together
Think of the workflow as three separate jobs: VLC plays the media, an encoder packages and sends the live video, and YouTube receives it. VideoLAN describes VLC’s stream-output pipeline for media VLC can read, including network streaming and transcoding, but that documentation does not establish a current direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS recipe. See VideoLAN’s Stream Output documentation and its file transcoding and streaming example.

For a DIY setup, use VLC as the moving-image source, OBS as the encoder and scene compositor, and YouTube Live as the destination. OBS is a plausible bridge, not a guarantee that every VLC playlist integration will work unattended. Check the current OBS and VLC instructions for your operating system and version, then validate the full loop and recovery behavior yourself. The available OBS community guide covers the YouTube connection, not a definitive current VLC-playlist recipe: OBS’s YouTube streaming guide.

Prepare the promo and YouTube Live event
Check the media and rights
- Confirm the promo plays correctly in VLC, including its audio, aspect ratio, and intended end-to-start transition.
- If you plan to loop several files, verify the playlist order and whether the transition between the last and first items is acceptable. Do not assume the chosen VLC-to-OBS source method will preserve playlist behavior until you test it.
- Use only video, music, logos, and other material you have permission to broadcast. A store promotion is not exempt from copyright rules just because the footage is prerecorded.
Create the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- In the stream setup, locate the current Stream URL and stream key fields. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say to reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon in the Stream URL field, then copy the URL and key into the encoder. Interface labels can change, so use the fields currently shown in your account. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key as a password: do not display it in a recording, share it publicly, or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Set up VLC playback and the encoder
Use VLC as the media source
Open the promo or playlist in VLC and establish a way for OBS to capture its video and audio. Depending on the operating system and versions involved, this may use a VLC source, a window or display capture, or another supported capture method. The exact source controls and playlist integration are version-dependent; verify the current application UI rather than following an assumed universal set of menu labels. Make sure the captured image is the promo itself—not VLC controls, desktop notifications, or an unrelated window—and confirm audio is captured once rather than duplicated.

If you choose VLC’s own stream-output features instead of capture, treat the output as an input to a separately configured compatible encoder only after confirming the transport and format are supported by both ends. VideoLAN’s documented HTTP and RTP examples explain VLC streaming concepts, but they are not proof of YouTube RTMPS compatibility: VideoLAN’s RTP streaming documentation.
Configure OBS to send to YouTube
- In OBS, open the stream settings and choose YouTube or the appropriate custom service option available in your version.
- Enter the RTMPS server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends using it when the encoder supports it.
- Set the video canvas and output to match the promo’s aspect ratio and a resolution your source, computer, and upload connection can sustain. Avoid scaling a low-resolution promo upward unless you have a specific reason.
- Choose an encoder format and output settings supported by the current YouTube guidance and your encoder. No specific bitrate, keyframe, or resolution values are established here for this promo setup, so do not treat an unverified preset as a guaranteed setting; consult the current YouTube and OBS guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream. Check OBS’s preview and YouTube’s stream health before making the event public.
Test the loop before promoting the stream
A successful connection is not the same as a dependable all-day stream. Run a test long enough to cover the complete promo or playlist and its return to the beginning. Observe the stream from a separate viewer session as well as in Live Control Room.

- Confirm the video and audio are synchronized and clear, and that no VLC or desktop controls appear.
- Watch the end-to-start transition and verify the intended playlist order repeats.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and confirm the stream remains connected during playback.
- Test what viewers see if VLC stops, OBS closes, the computer sleeps, or the network drops. Check whether the stream resumes after each relevant restart rather than assuming it will.
- Keep the host computer powered, prevent sleep, and use a stable network connection for the duration you expect to stream. These are operational precautions, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
RTMPS or HLS?
For a typical store promo, RTMPS is the documented secure RTMP option when the encoder supports it. YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its setup guidance says to confirm that the URL uses the rtmps scheme and points to the correct server if you encounter SSL or timeout problems; it also suggests explicitly specifying port 443 in applicable encoder setups.

YouTube positions HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream, so YouTube notes that it has higher latency. It is not an automatic fix for a failing promo stream; choose it only if your encoder and media requirements call for it and your workflow can accommodate the added latency. See YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Check the destination: compare the encoder’s server URL and key with the current fields in Live Control Room. A stale key or incorrect URL prevents the expected connection.
- Check RTMPS: verify the URL begins with
rtmpsand is the server URL YouTube supplied. For applicable setups, try explicitly specifying port 443 as YouTube suggests. - Check the encoder connection: confirm OBS is actually streaming and not merely showing a local preview.
SSL errors or timeouts
Recheck the RTMPS URL and destination server first. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice specifically calls out the scheme and correct server; port 443 may also need to be explicit in the encoder setup. Do not assume switching to HLS will solve a configuration error.
The stream connects but the image or sound is wrong
- In OBS, verify that the selected VLC window or capture source is still the active one and that the scene contains the intended source.
- Check that the source is not obscured by another layer and that the canvas does not crop the promo.
- Inspect OBS audio meters and the viewer-side stream. Look for missing, doubled, or out-of-sync audio.
The playlist does not loop or the stream stops after a restart
First isolate which component stopped: VLC playback, OBS encoding, the computer, or the network. Recheck VLC’s playlist behavior and the specific capture method on your OS/version, then repeat the end-of-playlist and restart tests. The cited documentation does not certify uninterrupted 24/7 playback or automatic recovery for this DIY design.

What the documented setup does—and does not—establish
VLC’s official documentation establishes that it can play media and provides stream-output and transcoding capabilities. YouTube’s current help explains its RTMPS setup, URL/key workflow, and HLS use cases. Those sources do not verify a current direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS path, nor do they certify an uninterrupted always-on configuration. For a DIY store stream, the reliable next step is a version-specific end-to-end test of VLC playback, encoder ingest, YouTube delivery, looping, and restart behavior before relying on it for customers.
