VLC can play a prerecorded playlist on repeat, but that alone does not make a YouTube livestream. You also need an encoder/output path that can send a supported feed to YouTube, plus the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The exact VLC menus and direct-output steps vary by build; the guidance below separates playlist playback from YouTube delivery rather than promising an unverified VLC-only setup.
What you need for a continuous stream
The setup has two jobs: VLC (or another playback source) supplies the prerecorded video, and an encoder sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow instructs creators to enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. A repeating local playlist does not replace that ingest connection.

- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- A playlist of video and audio you are authorized to broadcast.
- A VLC build configured to play the playlist repeatedly.
- An encoder/output route that accepts the VLC source and supports a protocol and settings YouTube accepts.
- A computer and network connection that remain available for the full time you use the local setup.
The YouTube requirements below describe its ingest guidance, not settings confirmed for every VLC build. Confirm the capabilities of your specific VLC version or separate encoder before relying on it for a 24/7 schedule.
Prepare and loop the playlist in VLC
Check the media first
Use only material you have permission to livestream, including music, animation, background tracks, and any material supplied by a third party. A video being available online or appropriate for children does not by itself give you broadcast rights. Copyright restrictions can interrupt live streams, including when YouTube detects a match to another copyrighted live broadcast.

Check that the files play correctly and in the intended order before building the playlist. Keep a local copy of the playlist and media, and note the VLC version you use: repeat controls, playlist behavior, and available output options can differ between builds.
Set repeat behavior without assuming a universal menu path
Add the authorized files to a VLC playlist and enable the repeat mode that repeats the entire playlist, rather than repeating only the current item. Test the complete sequence: let playback pass the last item and confirm that it returns to the first. Verify that video and audio continue after a file transition.

Because an official, version-specific VLC-to-YouTube procedure is not established here, use the controls documented for your installed VLC build. Do not assume that a particular command line, VLM configuration, or menu path works in every version, or that VLC will automatically restart after a failure.

- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream. Set its title, description, privacy, and other event details for the intended broadcast.
- Set the Audience selection accurately for the actual content. Choose “Yes, it’s ‘Made for Kids’” or “No, it’s not ‘Made for Kids’” as appropriate; the word “kids” in a channel or stream title does not determine the classification.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder you will use. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that event. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
YouTube’s encoder setup says to enter the Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. If you rotate or replace the key, update the encoder too; otherwise the feed may stop connecting.

Connect VLC playback to a YouTube-compatible encoder
Choose an output route that can actually take VLC’s playback as its source and send a supported live feed to YouTube. Depending on the software and VLC build, that may mean selecting VLC as an input in a separate encoder or configuring another supported output workflow. The exact connection and menus are implementation-specific; test them rather than assuming VLC itself can deliver the required protocol in your installation.
Use YouTube’s ingest guidance as the target

Do not treat YouTube’s HLS encoder-vendor documentation as a ready-made VLC recipe. Its HLS workflow describes HTTP PUT/POST playlists and segments, muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and closed GOPs; that describes an ingest implementation, not a universal VLC configuration.

Preview, test, then start the broadcast
- Start the playlist in VLC and start the encoder/output route.
- Wait for Live Control Room to receive the feed. Check the preview for the right video, expected order, audible sound, and any obvious sync or playback problems.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and confirm the event is accessible with the privacy setting you intended.
- Start the live event only after the preview and audio/video checks pass.
- Monitor the stream during operation. YouTube recommends advance setup, testing, previewing, and continuous monitoring; a playlist loop does not remove the need to watch for playback, connection, or ingest problems.
Made for Kids changes what viewers can do
When a livestream is set as Made for Kids, YouTube turns off features including live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving the stream to playlists or Watch Later. YouTube says personalized ads are not served on kids’ content; contextual ads may appear on live streams. Do not plan on chat or comments for interaction, or assume personalized-ad revenue.

Plan around the limits of 24/7 operation
A local setup depends on the local machine
With VLC running on a local computer, that computer, the playback process, encoder, and network path all need to remain available. Sleep settings, power loss, software crashes, network interruptions, or an expired/changed stream key can break the chain. Test a full playlist wrap and the complete delivery path before scheduling a long broadcast, and arrange a way to notice failures.
Do not assume one 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not promise that it will be saved as one uninterrupted archive or assume archive behavior beyond the stated limit. Check YouTube’s current handling and plan separately for any recordings you need to retain.
Common problems and fixes
