Its reports can help you compare topics, but search-volume figures are estimates and a strong keyword score does not guarantee views. Start with the video you can make for a specific audience, then use VidIQ to refine—not choose for you—the topic and wording.
What VidIQ does
VidIQ offers a web app and browser extension with tools for YouTube keyword research, video optimization, channel and competitor insights, content ideas, and AI-assisted workflows. Its Help Center also describes content generation and coaching. These are product capabilities, not evidence that using the software will increase views or grow a channel.

The keyword tools are designed to help creators compare YouTube search topics. VidIQ says its keyword research page provides estimated search volume, competition, related terms, and trend information; the extension can surface keyword information while browsing YouTube. The company also describes its keyword data as refreshed daily and promotes the size of its query dataset—vendor claims that should not be mistaken for an independent audit.
How to research a YouTube keyword with VidIQ
- Start with a specific video and audience need. Decide what question or problem the video will address before searching. Narrow topics make the results more relevant to the video you can actually produce.
- Open keyword research. On desktop, go to Research, then Keywords. In the mobile app, open Keywords. Enter a topic and submit it to load the report. VidIQ’s Keywords Research guide documents these paths.
- Read the summary and explore alternatives. Review the overall keyword score, estimated search volume, and competition. Then check matching terms, related keywords, and questions. Question prompts can suggest videos that answer a query directly.
- Make a shortlist, not a forecast. Compare candidate phrases with your intended video, your audience, and your ability to give a useful answer. A phrase with an appealing score is not automatically the best topic for your channel.
- Choose the view that suits the task. Use the browser extension for information surfaced in YouTube; use the web app when you want to work through a deeper research report.
What keyword scores and estimates can tell you
VidIQ’s search-volume figure is an estimate of monthly YouTube searches, not an exact count of people who will see or watch a video. Its guidance describes the score as reflecting search demand and competition on a rolling 30-day basis. Treat it as a way to compare candidate queries within the tool, not as a reliable prediction of impressions, views, or ranking.
#1 Best Overall
VidIQ’s getting-started guide explicitly cautions: “A strong keyword score can help you compare ideas, but it doesn’t guarantee views.” The guide is clear about the distinction: a keyword score may help with choosing between ideas, but it cannot establish how viewers will respond or how YouTube will distribute a particular video.
Use the report alongside your own judgment. A topic only makes sense if you can create a video that answers the search well and offers value to the audience you want to reach. No result in the keyword report substitutes for that decision.
What the free plan includes—and where its limits show up
VidIQ’s free/basic access has feature-specific result limits; there is no single cap that describes every keyword view. Its Help Center’s Keywords Research article, published August 28, 2026, says free/basic users see three results in Keywords For You, Rising Keywords, and Top Search Terms for Your Channel, and four results for matching keywords, related keywords, and questions. The separate plan documentation describes three results per search for free keyword research. Check the live plan details for the view you use rather than assuming one limit applies across the tool.
The plan documentation also lists monthly AI credits, shared across supported AI tools. VidIQ’s documentation, updated approximately September 2026, lists the following allowances:
Rank #3
| Plan and channel count | AI credits per month |
|---|---|
| Free | 150 |
| Pro | 1,000 |
| Boost, one channel | 2,000 |
| Boost, two channels | 2,500 |
| Boost, three channels | 3,000 |
| Max, one channel | 6,000 |
| Max, two channels | 8,000 |
| Max, three channels | 10,000 |
These are vendor-listed plan allowances, not fixed product specifications. Credits are shared across supported AI features, so using one tool leaves fewer credits for others; the documentation says credits refresh monthly on the relevant plan anniversary. Check VidIQ’s current feature-and-credit table before building a workflow around a particular allowance, since plan terms can change.

The useful question is whether the free-plan limits interrupt work you already do—not whether a paid tier promises growth. Assess your actual workflow against the feature access and credit limits listed for the plan:
Rank #4
- Keyword research: Do the free results give you enough alternatives for the topics you regularly consider, or do the feature-specific caps cut off useful comparisons?
- Features: Do you need more than keyword research, such as competitor insights, channel audits, optimization, or AI creation tools?
- AI usage: Estimate how often you would use the supported AI tools and whether their shared monthly credit pool would cover that workload.
- Channels and competitors: Consider how many channels or competitor profiles you need to track, and whether the plan’s access suits that scope.
- Coaching: Decide whether personalized coaching is relevant to your goals; its availability alone does not establish that it will be valuable for your situation.
The cited plan documentation does not establish a complete current price-versus-value comparison, and it says billing currency is shown at checkout. Review the live plan page and checkout details before committing; do not infer a price or return on investment from the feature list alone.
Who may find VidIQ useful
VidIQ can be useful for creators who want a dedicated way to compare YouTube search topics, inspect related terms and questions, or bring channel and optimization tools into one workflow. A new creator can begin with the free access and see whether the available results are sufficient for their research habits. The software is less compelling if the creator does not need those tools or expects a keyword score to supply a video idea, validate an audience, or guarantee performance.
