Keep your eyes and attention on the route, not on the glasses. Before walking, learn how to pause or disable the display, audio, camera and notifications. While moving, do not look at or interact with a display; stop in a safe place whenever you need directions, settings or messages. Turn electronic features off where full attention is required, take regular breaks, stop if you feel discomfort, and treat camera recording as a privacy responsibility rather than a purely technical function.
Why video glasses can make walking less safe
Video glasses combine a forward-facing camera, speakers or open-ear audio, a display, wireless connections, notifications and sometimes augmented-reality effects. Each feature can compete with the visual and auditory information you need to walk safely. A display can draw your gaze away from the path; audio can mask a vehicle, cyclist or warning; a notification can tempt you to interact at the wrong moment; and a camera can encourage you to frame a shot instead of watching where you are going.

Snap’s Spectacles safety guidance states: “Spectacles’ camera, display, AR effects, audio, notifications, LED lights, and other features may distract you and increase the time it takes to react to hazards.” The same guidance says not to use those features where distraction could put someone at risk. That is a product warning, not a measured collision rate: the available guidance does not establish how often an incident occurs or prove that a particular interaction pattern is safe.
The practical rule is therefore simple: use the glasses as a hands-free aid only when they are not taking attention from the environment. If a feature needs your eyes, hands or sustained concentration, pause your walk first.

Prepare the glasses before you leave
Do the setup at home or while stationary. The goal is to make the safe action—silencing, pausing or shutting down—faster than trying to study controls beside traffic or on uneven ground.
Learn the stop and pause controls
- Identify the physical button, touch gesture, voice command or phone setting that pauses the display.
- Find the control that disables audio and spoken notifications.
- Learn how to stop a camera preview or recording and how to confirm that capture has ended.
- Practice turning the glasses completely off and restarting them without looking at a screen while walking.
- Check the current manual for your exact model; controls and warnings differ between products and can change after software updates.
Do not rely on remembering a complicated gesture in an emergency. If your model has a simple hardware switch or a one-step “do not disturb” mode, set it up before leaving and know what feedback confirms that it worked.
Reduce attention-grabbing output
- Disable nonessential notifications and previews.
- Use the least intrusive audio setting that still serves your purpose, and avoid continuous content while navigating streets.
- Turn off animated effects, games and other features that invite you to look around the display.
- Set navigation prompts, if you use them, to the minimum useful frequency.
- Keep the camera off unless you have a specific reason to record.
These settings are practical precautions based on manufacturer warnings about distraction. They are not a guarantee that the glasses are safe in every environment.

Check fit, battery and visibility
- Adjust the frame so it does not slip, pinch or require repeated touching.
- Clean the lenses and camera area so you are not tempted to troubleshoot while moving.
- Charge the device and carry a conventional backup such as a phone or printed information when a dead battery would leave you without needed directions.
- Confirm that the glasses do not block your peripheral view or make it difficult to see signs, steps or changing light.
Rules for using a display while walking
Keep the display out of your attention whenever the route demands rapid visual decisions. The Ray-Ban user manual cited for this guidance advises paying attention to surroundings, signage and obstacles and turning electronic features off in situations requiring full attention.
| Situation | Safer behavior | Why the behavior matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clear, familiar sidewalk | Walk with the display paused or ignored; use only brief, nonessential audio if it does not reduce awareness. | Even a familiar route can contain people, vehicles, bikes, doors or surface changes. |
| Uneven ground, stairs or curbs | Pause the display and remove any visual prompt before stepping onto the area. | Foot placement and balance require your full visual attention. |
| Crossing a road, driveway or cycle lane | Stop interacting, look and listen normally, and cross only after checking the environment. | A display or notification can delay your response to moving traffic. |
| Crowded pavement, station or event | Stop in a safe edge area before checking messages or settings; otherwise keep features paused. | People move unpredictably and you may need to yield or change direction quickly. |
| Low light, glare, rain or unfamiliar terrain | Turn electronic features off if they compete with visibility; use ordinary lighting and signage. | Reduced visibility leaves less time to detect obstacles. |
| Any place where a mistake could injure another person | Do not use attention-demanding features. | Snap specifically warns against use where distraction could put someone at risk. |
“Looking for only a second” is still an interaction with a display. If you need a map, settings panel, message or camera framing, move to a safe place away from the walking line, stop, and then look.

Use walking navigation without watching the glasses
Visual pedestrian navigation is a feature, not proof that viewing a display while walking is safe. Meta’s 2025 announcement described visual turn-by-turn walking directions for Ray-Ban Display, with rollout in beta in select cities. That announcement establishes availability for some users and locations; it does not establish that watching the display during motion is safe.
Plan the route while stationary
- Set the destination before starting.
- Review the first segment and any complicated crossings while you are still in a safe place.
- Start spoken prompts, if you can hear them without reducing awareness of traffic and people.
- When a visual map or turn detail is necessary, stop at a safe location, orient yourself, and then resume walking with the display paused.
Handle a missed turn
Do not stop in the middle of a crossing or keep walking while trying to correct the route. Move to the side, away from driveways, curb edges and the flow of pedestrians. Pause, check the route, and restart only after you can watch the surroundings normally. If the system gives contradictory or late directions, treat ordinary signs and your own observation as the authority and discontinue the feature if it is creating uncertainty.
Prepare for unavailable features
A beta feature may be limited by city, account, software version, connectivity or rollout status. Do not assume that a navigation display will work everywhere. Keep an alternative route method available and never let the expectation of a prompt replace checking signs, crossings and obstacles yourself.
Control audio and notifications around hazards
Audio does not occupy your vision, but it can still reduce awareness. Continuous music, calls or spoken prompts may make it harder to notice horns, bells, approaching bicycles, emergency announcements or a person trying to get your attention.
- Pause audio before crossing, entering a car park, approaching a driveway or moving through a crowded area.
- Use a volume that leaves you able to hear the environment; if you cannot, turn the audio off.
- Do not answer a call, dictate a long message or navigate menus while moving.
- Silence notifications that are not urgent, and avoid opening a notification merely because it appears.
- If you notice that you are reacting late, missing sounds or repeatedly checking prompts, stop and disable the feature.
The safe setting is the one that lets you maintain ordinary awareness, not the one that keeps every feature available.

Camera use and privacy around other people
Camera-equipped glasses can record people who do not realize a camera is active. Meta’s responsible-use guidance says: “If you want to capture a photo or video, make sure that you ask for permission from those around you.” It also advises avoiding sensitive locations and places where people reasonably expect privacy. Follow applicable local recording and data-protection rules in addition to being considerate.

Ask before recording
- Tell people nearby that you want to take a photo or video.
- Wait for permission before recording identifiable people, especially children or anyone in a private or sensitive setting.
- Respect a refusal and stop recording if someone becomes uncomfortable.
- Do not treat a recording light or other indicator as consent.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has warned that discreet recording indicators may be missed. An indicator can show device status, but it cannot ensure that bystanders saw it or agreed to be captured. Avoid recording in bathrooms, changing areas, medical settings, schools or other places where privacy is expected unless you have a clear, lawful and appropriate reason.
Separate filming from walking
Frame and start the shot while stationary. Keep your attention on the path during the recording, and stop in a safe place before reviewing, editing or sharing it. If the scene changes and you need to follow someone, turn your attention back to walking rather than continuing to film.
Take breaks and respond to discomfort
Snap advises regular display breaks and stopping use if dizziness, nausea, eye strain, motion sickness or other discomfort occurs. Do not try to “push through” symptoms or keep walking while hoping they will pass.
- Pause the display at the first sign of strain or visual discomfort.
- Stop in a safe place and remove the glasses if symptoms continue.
- Rest your eyes and reorient yourself before deciding whether to continue without the device.
- Stop the outing or seek appropriate medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent or unusual for you.
Discomfort is also a warning about situational awareness. If you feel disoriented, queasy or visually overloaded, you may not be able to judge obstacles and traffic normally.

Do not treat video glasses as protective eyewear
The cited Ray-Ban manual says its product is not safety glasses and does not provide eye protection against mechanical-impact hazards. A camera, display or tinted lens does not automatically make a device suitable for construction, workshop, cycling-impact, chemical or other protective applications.
Use equipment certified for the hazard you face, and check the exact model’s manual for limits on weather, impact, dust, water, temperature and outdoor use. If the manual does not claim protective performance, assume the glasses are ordinary consumer electronics rather than protective equipment.

The display will not pause
Stop immediately in a safe area. Remove the glasses or turn them off using the hardware control rather than continuing to walk while troubleshooting. If the problem recurs, use the glasses only after checking the manual and updating or servicing them as appropriate.
Audio or notifications keep restarting
Disable wireless notifications or audio at the phone level, switch to a do-not-disturb mode, or power the glasses down. Do not keep walking while repeatedly dismissing alerts.
You lose awareness of the route
Stop, look around, and establish where you are using ordinary signs and landmarks. If you cannot regain orientation without continuous visual prompts, put the glasses away and use a stationary alternative.

A bystander objects to recording
Stop capture, acknowledge the concern and do not argue that an indicator was visible. Delete or avoid sharing the recording when appropriate, and follow local rules governing requests, deletion and use of images.
How to check model-specific guidance
Instructions differ by model and may change with firmware or software updates. Before relying on a feature outdoors, read the current manufacturer manual and safety pages for:
- display use and recommended breaks;
- audio, notification and voice-control behavior;
- camera activation and recording indicators;
- weather, temperature and water limits;
- eye-wear classification and impact protection;
- privacy controls and recording notices;
- steps for disabling features or performing an emergency shutdown.
The Ray-Ban manual cited here is from 2021, so its warnings should not be generalized automatically to every later product. Conversely, a newer feature announcement does not cancel the need to follow the current manual. Use the documentation for the exact glasses, software version and region.

- Before departure: charge the glasses, fit them securely, silence nonessential alerts and practice pause, camera-stop and power-off controls.
- At the start of the walk: set navigation while stationary and confirm that you can see and hear the environment normally.
- During ordinary walking: keep the display paused or outside your attention; use only low-distraction audio that does not mask surroundings.
- At every hazard: crossing, uneven surface, crowd, driveway, poor visibility or confusing junction—stop interacting and give the environment your full attention.
- When information is needed: move out of the walking flow, stop, check the map or settings, then resume with the display paused.
- For recording: ask permission, avoid privacy-sensitive places, and remember that a recording indicator is not consent.
- For discomfort or reduced awareness: stop using the glasses, remove them if necessary, and continue only when you feel fully oriented.
Manufacturer guidance identifies distraction as a real product risk, but the available sources do not quantify collision risk or certify any interaction pattern as safe. The most defensible practice is to make walking—not the display, audio, navigation or camera—the primary activity.
