To take website screenshots through an MCP client, install Vercel Labs’ agent-browser CLI and its Chrome runtime, start the stdio server with agent-browser mcp, connect that command in your MCP client, then navigate and call agent_browser_screenshot. The default core profile includes the screenshot tool.
This is not the same service as Vercel’s remote MCP endpoint at https://mcp.vercel.com. That endpoint is an OAuth service for Vercel projects, deployments, logs and analytics; the workflow below runs a local browser automation server for screenshots.
What you need before setup
- A computer with Node.js and npm available.
- An MCP client that can launch local stdio servers, such as an AI coding client or desktop assistant.
- The
agent-browserpackage and the Chrome for Testing runtime it installs. - On Linux, permission to install the system packages required by Chromium if they are missing.
The commands and flags below come from the project’s official usage guide. Names and options can change, so check the current guide in the Vercel Labs agent-browser repository when setting up a new environment.
Install agent-browser and Chrome
Global installation
A global install makes the agent-browser command available to every project and to MCP clients launched from your normal shell:

Use a local dependency when you want the browser version pinned with a particular project or when your MCP client runs from that project directory:
npm install agent-browser
npx agent-browser installIf your shell does not resolve a local binary, use the package runner explicitly in scripts or configure the MCP command as npx with arguments for agent-browser and mcp. A global install is simpler for a desktop MCP configuration; a local install is easier to reproduce in a team or CI environment.
Start the MCP server
Run:
agent-browser mcpThe process starts a Model Context Protocol server over stdio. It waits for your MCP client to send tool calls, so a terminal may appear to do nothing while the server is running. Do not close that process while the client is using the browser.

The default profile is core, which includes the screenshot tool. To expose the complete typed CLI surface, start:

agent-browser mcp --tools core,network,reactUse the smallest profile that contains the operations your workflow needs. A narrower profile makes tool discovery easier for clients that show many MCP functions; all is useful when an agent needs broader CLI parity.
Connect an MCP client
Configure your client to launch the executable and pass mcp as its argument. The minimal configuration shape is:

}For a project-local install, point the client at the appropriate package-runner command instead of assuming a global binary. The server is local and uses stdio; it is not a URL that you paste into an MCP client’s remote-server field.
Tool discovery may be paginated
Some clients do not display every tool immediately. If you cannot see the screenshot function, load the next page of discovered tools or restart the client after changing the profile. In the default setup, look for agent_browser_screenshot.
Take a screenshot through MCP
Navigate, settle, capture
Ask the client to open the target URL with its browser navigation tool. Wait for the page’s main content to render, then call agent_browser_screenshot. A practical sequence is:
- Open the URL.
- Wait for a selector, a short delay, or the page’s network activity to settle.
- Take a screenshot of the current viewport or request a full-page capture.
- Save the result to a named path or let the CLI use its temporary directory.
- Close the browser session when the work is complete.
The equivalent CLI quick start is:

agent-browser closeIn an MCP conversation, the navigation call establishes the page and agent_browser_screenshot performs the capture. If an interaction changes the DOM, take a fresh snapshot before reusing element references; old references can point to elements that no longer exist.

Viewport, full-page and annotated output
Use a normal screenshot when you need what is visible in the current viewport. Use the full-page option when the deliverable must include content below the fold:

Headless Chromium hides native scrollbars by default. Launch with --hide-scrollbars false when visible scrollbars are part of the screenshot requirement.
Sessions, permissions and safe automation
Isolate browser state
The unnamed default browser session is shared and persists across conversations. That can expose cookies, open pages or navigation state to another task. Use a named browser session, or pass the MCP tool’s session argument, for each independent job. Close the named session after the capture.
Restrict allowed domains
When the client supports it, pass allowedDomains to limit navigation to sites that are in scope. The project maps this setting to the CLI’s allowed-domain restrictions and applies containment and launch-mode restrictions to the relevant fresh controllable context. This is especially important for agents that receive URLs from users or external data.

Handle consent and overlays
A cookie dialog, newsletter modal or chat widget can cover the page or intercept a click. Dismiss the overlay, then take a fresh snapshot and use new element references. Do not continue with references captured before the DOM changed.
Common problems and fixes
“command not found: agent-browser”
The global npm bin directory is not on your PATH, or the package was installed locally. Add the npm global bin directory to PATH, install globally again, or configure the MCP client to invoke the local package through its runner.

Chrome will not start
Run agent-browser install to install Chrome for Testing. On Linux, repeat with agent-browser install --with-deps so required system libraries are installed. If your environment blocks downloads, provide a network path that permits the runtime installation or use the browser already supported by your organization’s setup.
The MCP client cannot connect
Confirm that the client launches agent-browser with the single argument mcp, rather than trying to connect to https://mcp.vercel.com. Check that the executable is available to the client’s environment, not only to an interactive shell. Restart the client after editing its JSON.

Use the default core profile or start with --tools all. If your client paginates discovery, load additional tool pages. A stale client process may still be using the previous profile; stop and relaunch it.
A click fails because an element is covered
Inspect the current page snapshot, dismiss the covering consent or modal element, and capture a new snapshot. Then perform the click with the new reference and take the screenshot.
The image is incomplete
Wait for the page’s key selector or for network activity to settle before capturing. For a long document, use --full. Lazy-loaded images may need scrolling or an explicit wait so they are present before the full-page capture.
Different tasks interfere with one another
Stop using the unnamed shared session. Assign a unique session value to each MCP job and close each session when done.

Is this the same as Vercel’s MCP server at mcp.vercel.com?
No. The remote Vercel MCP service handles Vercel platform work. agent-browser mcp is a local stdio server that controls a browser for automation and screenshots.
Can I use agent-browser without an MCP client?
Yes. The CLI commands agent-browser open, agent-browser screenshot and agent-browser close run the workflow directly from a terminal.
When should I enable --tools all?
Enable it when your agent needs capabilities outside the default core profile. Otherwise, keep core or select named profiles to reduce the tool surface.
