You don’t need a Venmo debit or credit card to use Venmo. To pay another person, link a bank account and select it as the funding source. To spend money you’ve received, verify your identity so you can use your Venmo balance. In stores and online, you can pay without the Venmo card only at merchants that support Venmo QR or the Pay with Venmo button. This guide is based on Venmo’s U.S. help pages, which were checked in October 2026.
Which cardless route fits what you want to do
| Goal | What you need | Works everywhere? |
|---|---|---|
| Pay a friend or another person | A linked (ideally verified) bank account, or an accessible Venmo balance | Yes, to any Venmo user |
| Spend money you received | Identity verification, which unlocks balance access | Person-to-person, plus participating merchants |
| Pay in a store | Venmo app, a funding source that covers the purchase, and a merchant that accepts Venmo QR | No, only participating U.S. businesses |
| Pay online or in an app | A merchant that offers the Venmo button | No, it depends on the merchant |
Pay another person from a bank account
Venmo says you don’t have to load a balance before paying someone. Payments to other users can be funded directly from a linked payment method.

- In the app, open the Me tab, then Wallet, then Banks and Cards, then Add a bank or card.
- Add your bank. If you link it manually, Venmo sends small verification transfers. Venmo recommends verifying the bank before you make transfers, and a bank must be verified before you can use it to add money to your balance.
- Start a payment: pick the recipient, enter the amount and a note.
- Check the funding method shown before you tap Pay. Venmo generally doesn’t let you change the funding method on a completed payment.
How Venmo picks the money
If you have balance access and the balance covers the payment, Venmo uses the balance first. Otherwise it uses your preferred payment method. For person-to-person payments, Venmo does not split the charge between your balance and another method. If you want the payment to come from your bank, check that the balance won’t cover it, or confirm the source shown on screen.
Spend money that’s already in Venmo
Money you receive can sit in Venmo, but using it to pay requires identity verification. Open Me and check the Wallet view for your Venmo balance. You can start verification in Settings. Once balance access is on, you can use the funds for:
