The jack sends analog audio; USB-C headphones expect digital audio over USB. To use them together, connect the headphones to the phone’s USB-C port if it supports USB audio, or find an interface that explicitly converts audio from a 3.5mm input to USB digital output. The familiar USB-C-to-3.5mm dongle does the opposite.
Why the two connections do not match
A 3.5mm headphone jack provides analog audio. USB-C headsets use a digital USB audio interface; Android’s accessory specification says permitted USB headsets have a digital USB audio interface. A physical plug that fits, or a simple wiring adapter, does not by itself convert one type of signal into the other.

That is why the common USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter is not the fix: it takes digital audio from a phone’s USB-C port and converts it to analog audio for conventional wired headphones. It is designed for the reverse direction from the setup in this guide.
Choose the connection that fits your phone
| Route | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Plug 3.5mm headphones into the phone’s jack | Sends analog audio directly to compatible headphones. | This does not connect USB-C digital headphones. |
| Plug USB-C headphones into the phone’s USB-C port | Sends digital audio over USB-C. | Confirm that the exact phone supports USB digital audio and USB host/audio operation; some devices may also need a sound-setting toggle. |
| Use a 3.5mm analog-input-to-USB-C digital-audio interface | Could convert the phone’s analog jack output into USB digital audio for the headphones. | Confirm the direction, phone compatibility, and microphone/call support if required. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universally compatible model. |
| Use a USB-C-to-3.5mm DAC dongle | Converts USB-C digital output to analog headphones. | This is the reverse direction and is not a solution for USB-C headphones connected to the phone’s headphone jack. |
Check compatibility before buying an interface
- Identify the exact phone model. Check its manufacturer specifications or ask support whether it supports USB-C digital audio and USB host/audio operation. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish that it supports this audio path.
- Look for a USB-audio setting. Check the phone’s sound settings for an option to enable audio through USB-C; Google notes that some devices require this setting.
- Verify the interface’s signal direction. Its specifications must say it accepts analog audio from a 3.5mm input and outputs digital USB audio to the headphones. Connector names alone are not enough.
- Confirm compatibility with both devices. Ask the phone and accessory makers about USB Audio Class support, USB host mode, analog input, and compatibility with the exact handset and headphones.
Connect the headphones and test playback
- Connect the headphones through the supported route: the phone’s USB-C port, or a verified analog-input-to-USB-C interface.
- Play audio and check the phone’s volume. Google’s Pixel guidance says audio plays through a plugged-in accessory; if there is no sound, check volume and whether the accessory works with digital audio.
- If playback works but calls or microphone input do not, check the phone’s USB-C call support and whether the interface carries the microphone path you need.
Why calls and microphone input need a separate check
USB audio playback does not guarantee that calls will work through the same headphones. Google says some devices do not support calls using USB-C earbuds. If you need calls or a headset microphone, confirm support for those functions on the phone and, when using an interface, its specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
What the official guidance establishes
Android’s USB headset accessory specification requires a digital USB audio interface for permitted USB headsets. Google advises Pixel users to check that USB-C accessories work with digital audio, and its earbud guidance notes that some devices do not support calls through USB-C earbuds. Samsung’s guidance for applicable Galaxy devices describes a DAC-compatible USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, a conversion from USB-C digital audio to 3.5mm analog audio—not proof that the adapter works in reverse. These sources establish the distinction between the audio paths, but do not establish a universally compatible analog-input-to-USB-C interface.
