URL2PNG can capture a webpage as an image that you can use for a social sharing card, but it does not create the card’s social metadata or guarantee that a platform will display the preview. The workflow has two separate parts: generate and host the image, then add the relevant metadata to your page and check the shared URL with the target platform.
What URL2PNG does—and what it does not do
URL2PNG is a website screenshot API: you send it a page URL and capture settings, and it returns an image. Its product page describes it as a service to “Capture snapshots of any website, right in your app, quickly and reliably.” That is a service description, not independent performance testing. URL2PNG is not documented as a social-card editor. The reviewed documentation does not show it inserting Open Graph or other social metadata into your webpage, nor does it promise that a social network will render a preview.

Think of the screenshot as the image asset only. You still need to make that image available at a stable, publicly reachable URL, add the metadata expected by your target platform, and validate the URL you intend people to share. Those publishing steps happen outside the screenshot request.

Decide what the image should show before generating it. A social card often needs a deliberate crop, but the URL2PNG documentation does not establish one universally correct aspect ratio for every social network. Set an explicit viewport, inspect the composition, and adjust it for the page and destination platform.

uniquevaries the request to force a fresh screenshot. The documented default TTL is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); choose cache behavior deliberately when the page changes.
These defaults and options are documented in the URL2PNG Quickstart Guide. API behavior can change, so confirm the live documentation before relying on a default.
Build and sign the URL2PNG v6 request
The v6 request uses an account API key, a security token, and the encoded target URL. The quickstart describes the token as the MD5 hash of the complete query string and the secret key. Follow the current official example for the exact parameter ordering and escaping when signing: changing the query string after computing the token can invalidate it.

Keep the secret key on a server you control. Do not put it in frontend JavaScript, a public page, or a client-side app where visitors can inspect it. URL2PNG’s documentation includes examples, but the code below is intentionally not fabricated: use the current official example to generate the signed request, then send that URL from a protected backend. The reviewed material does not establish a tested, language-specific signing snippet here.

- Choose the target page URL and capture parameters, including an explicit viewport if the crop matters.
- Construct the full query string using the official parameter names and escaping rules, then calculate the documented token from that complete query string and your secret.
- Send the signed request from your backend and save the returned image. Check the HTTP response and resulting image before publishing it.
Publish the screenshot as a social preview
Once you have the image, store it or serve it from a stable URL that the relevant platform can fetch. Then configure the page’s social metadata according to that platform’s current documentation. The screenshot API’s job is capture; it does not perform these page updates. Finally, submit the actual page URL—not just the image URL—to the platform’s current preview or debugging tool and inspect what it retrieves. Platform image specifications and metadata rules vary and were not verified here, so check the target platform’s live guidance rather than assuming one crop or tag set works everywhere.

Understand URL2PNG caching and render usage
URL2PNG says newly generated screenshots count as renders and cached loads do not count against plan usage. A 30-day default TTL can therefore affect both freshness and the number of new renders, while unique requests a fresh screenshot when you need to bypass a cached result. Avoid adding a unique value on every request unless freshness is worth the additional render usage. Plan quotas and prices are commercial terms that can change; check the live URL2PNG plans page before estimating recurring cost.
