The resulting rule is saved in My filters. Use the lightning-bolt zapper instead only when you want a one-time removal that disappears when the page is reloaded.
The picker works by generating a cosmetic or network filter scoped to the site you are viewing. Preview the candidate rule before saving: a broad selector can hide neighboring content, while a more specific selector usually affects fewer matching elements.

What uBlock Origin’s element picker does
uBlock Origin’s element picker is an interactive tool for turning a visible page element into a saved filter. The gorhill/uBlock project documentation describes it this way: “The element picker can permanently remove elements on a web page by using it to create a network or cosmetic filter.” In practical terms, “permanently” means the filter remains in your custom list and is applied again when you revisit the site, until you change, disable, or remove that rule.
The picker is useful for recurring annoyances such as a newsletter panel, an autoplay container, a sticky promotion, or another block that you do not want to see on a particular site. It is not a general page editor: it does not rewrite the site for everyone, and it does not alter the publisher’s server. The rule runs in your copy of uBlock Origin.
When you click an element, the picker proposes one or more filters. Depending on what the page exposes, a proposal can be a cosmetic filter that hides matching markup or a network filter that blocks a matching request. You can test a proposal in the picker before committing it, which is important because the first suggestion is not always the narrowest one.

Picker or zapper: choose the tool that matches your goal

The distinction is easy to miss because both tools let you point at page content. The picker is a filter-creation workflow. The zapper changes the current page view only. If you close the tab or reload and the item returns, that is expected behavior for the zapper, not evidence that it failed.
Before you begin
- Install and enable the uBlock Origin extension in your browser.
- Open the webpage containing the unwanted item over HTTP or HTTPS.
- Make sure uBlock Origin’s custom-filter list, named My filters, is enabled. The popup guide says the eye-dropper button is absent when this list is disabled.
- Keep the page in a state where the unwanted element is visible. If a panel appears only after scrolling, opening a menu, or accepting another dialog, trigger that state before selecting it.
The picker cannot run on privileged browser pages. It is also limited to HTTP(S) pages, so it will not launch on a file:// page. The documentation notes that you can still write a cosmetic filter manually in My filters for a local file URL, but the interactive picker itself is unavailable there.
Step-by-step: create a filter with the element picker
1. Open the uBlock Origin popup
Use your browser’s toolbar to open the uBlock Origin popup while the target page is active. If the extension icon is hidden in an overflow menu, open that menu first. The popup controls apply to the tab you are viewing, so check the site name or address before entering picker mode.
2. Click the eye-dropper icon
Select the eye-dropper control to enter element picker mode. The pointer changes to indicate that page elements can be inspected. Do not choose the lightning-bolt control if you want a saved rule; that control launches the zapper.
If you cannot find the eye-dropper, check the extension’s dashboard and confirm that My filters is not disabled. uBlock Origin’s popup guidance specifically identifies a disabled custom-filter list as the reason the picker button can be missing. Once the list is enabled, reopen the popup and look for the eye-dropper again.

3. Point to the unwanted element and click
Move the pointer over the exact item you want to hide and click it. The picker opens a dialog containing candidate network and cosmetic filters when it can identify them. Selection accuracy matters: clicking a container can target the entire region, while clicking a child element may target only its text, image, or close button.

Selecting a shared parent can affect all matching cards. Selecting a unique child may leave the surrounding layout intact but could fail to remove the visual space occupied by the parent.
4. Preview each candidate before saving
Choose a proposed filter in the dialog to preview its effect. The page updates temporarily so you can inspect what would disappear. Look at the selected item and its neighbors, including navigation, article text, comments, and other controls. A useful rule hides the nuisance without taking unrelated content with it.
The picker exposes controls for target depth and specificity. Lower depth generally selects a larger area of the page; higher specificity generally matches fewer elements. Treat those descriptions as guidance rather than guarantees: the correct choice depends on the page’s markup and on whether similar elements appear elsewhere.
Preview at least two candidates when the first one is broad. If a selector removes a whole column, banner region, or list instead of the intended block, move toward a more specific option. If a highly specific selector hides only a fragment and leaves an empty container, try a less deeply nested target or select the parent element again.

5. Edit the filter text when necessary
You can edit the proposed filter in the picker dialog. Manual editing is useful when a selector includes a changing class, identifier, or URL component, or when the automatically chosen target is too broad. Keep the rule valid and make sure it matches at least one element on the current page; the Create action is unavailable when the edited text is invalid or matches nothing.

Change one part at a time and preview after each change. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment narrowed the match and which one broke it. A selector that works on one page state may not match a later state if the site generates different markup after navigation or interaction.
6. Click Create
When the preview is correct and the rule is valid, click Create. uBlock Origin adds the site-scoping tokens required for the rule and saves it to your custom filter list. The saved entry is available in My filters in the dashboard.
Return to the page and confirm that the element remains hidden. Then reload normally and check again. Testing after a reload distinguishes a saved picker filter from a temporary visual change and reveals whether the site recreates the element in a way the rule does not match.
How to judge a filter’s scope
Previewing is the main safeguard against accidental over-blocking. Use these checks while comparing candidates:
- Check the immediate neighbors. Text, images, buttons, and borders around the target should remain unless you deliberately selected a larger container.
- Check repeated content. If the page has a list of similar cards, see whether the candidate removes one card or all matching cards.
- Check layout gaps. Hiding a child may leave an empty region because the parent still occupies space. Selecting the correct parent can remove the gap, but a parent that is too high in the hierarchy can hide useful content.
- Check dynamic states. If the unwanted item is inside an open menu, modal, or expanded panel, verify the preview in that state rather than assuming the rule will match every state.
- Check the page after navigation. A rule scoped to one site can affect other paths on that site when the same selector is reused. Visit a second page if you regularly browse the site.
Depth and specificity are trade-offs. A lower-depth target can be convenient when a nuisance is wrapped in several layers, but it increases the area at risk. A higher-specificity target is safer when many similar blocks exist, yet it may stop matching if the site changes a class or identifier.

What to do when the element comes back
An element that returns after a reload does not have one universal cause. The official picker guide lists several possibilities; work through them in the order that fits what you observed.
Try a cache-bypassing reload for a network rule
If the candidate was a network filter, the browser may still be displaying a cached response. Perform the browser’s cache-bypassing reload for the page, then test the filter again. This check is relevant when the rule was created successfully but the old resource continues to appear immediately after a normal reload.

Some pages include variable values in URLs, classes, or other selectors. A rule that contains a session value, rotating number, or generated name can match once and fail later. Reopen the saved text in My filters, identify the changing portion, and manually adjust the rule to use the stable part of the page’s pattern. Keep the edited rule valid and preview it on the page before relying on it.
Confirm cosmetic filtering is enabled
If the rule is cosmetic, it cannot hide anything while cosmetic filtering is disabled. Check whether filtering was turned off for this site or globally, then enable it and reload. A site-specific exception can be easy to overlook if you previously changed uBlock Origin’s controls for troubleshooting another problem.
Confirm My filters is checked
Your custom rule is stored in My filters. If that list is unchecked or disabled, the saved entry will not be applied and the picker control may disappear from the popup. Re-enable the list in the dashboard, return to the page, and test again.
Check for a third-party exception
The guide notes that a third-party exception can counteract a custom filter. If the rule is present, filtering is enabled, and the selector still has no effect, review exceptions and other rules that apply to the page. Remove or adjust the conflicting exception only if you understand why it was added; an exception may be protecting a function you still need.

Consider that the page may be unsupported
Some pages do not expose content in a way the picker can reliably target. Privileged browser pages cannot be picked, and the interactive tool is restricted to HTTP(S). If the page falls outside those limits, the picker is not the right mechanism. For a local file:// page, the documented alternative is to add a cosmetic filter manually in My filters.
Touch-screen controls
On a touch screen, the picker uses swipe gestures in addition to taps. Swiping right exits picker mode. When the dialog is open, one swipe right hides the dialog and a second swipe right exits the mode. Swiping left makes the dialog visible again. These gestures matter if the dialog covers the element you need to inspect or if you need to leave picker mode without returning to the toolbar.
Maintaining your custom filters
Created rules remain in My filters, so treat that list as the record of your page customizations. When a site redesign changes its markup, a previously useful selector can become too broad, stop matching, or hide a newly important control. Inspect the affected entry instead of repeatedly creating new rules for the same nuisance.
Keep one clear purpose per rule where possible. A rule intended to hide a single sign-up panel should not also be responsible for unrelated layout changes. Narrow rules are easier to test when a page changes and easier to remove when your preference changes.

After editing a rule, preview the page, reload it, and visit the relevant site path again. If the element returns only on a different path or after an interaction, reproduce that state before changing the selector. This avoids replacing a working rule with a broader one based on an incomplete test.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you want the removal to survive a reload? If yes, use the eye-dropper picker; if no, the lightning-bolt zapper is sufficient.
- Is the page an HTTP(S) webpage rather than a privileged browser page or
file://document? The interactive tools require HTTP(S). - Is My filters enabled? If not, enable it before looking for the picker button.
- Did you click the exact element or an enclosing container? Re-select if the preview affects too much or too little.
- Did you preview neighboring and repeated content? Save only after the scope is acceptable.
- After clicking Create, does the entry appear in My filters and survive a reload?
- If it fails later, have you checked cache, changing selectors or URLs, cosmetic-filter settings, list status, exceptions, and page support?
Documentation currency
The official gorhill/uBlock documentation page for the element picker was edited August 19, 2024; the zapper page was edited March 21, 2025. Browser and extension interfaces can change, so button names or locations may differ in a later release even though the picker-versus-zapper distinction remains the same. When the interface changes, look for the eye-dropper picker, the lightning-bolt zapper, and the My filters list described above.
