In Supercharts, choose Trade → Paper Trading → Connect. Then use the order ticket, chart trading, Depth of Market, Bar Replay and Strategy Report to test both your method and your execution process before committing cash. Treat the simulator as a controlled validation stage—not proof that a strategy will make money in a live brokerage account.
What TradingView Paper Trading is—and what it is not
Paper Trading is TradingView’s virtual-money simulator. It tracks simulated orders and positions in real time while you use the platform’s charts, indicators, drawing tools and trading interface. TradingView describes it as practice with no deposits and no real money involved, designed to approximate market conditions closely enough to evaluate execution and a strategy.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The account is not funded capital, a brokerage account or a route to the market. TradingView explicitly says it does not provide real margin trading or brokerage services; leverage and broker mechanics are simulated. A profitable paper record therefore shows that your rules and process worked in that simulation. It does not establish that the same trades will be profitable after live spreads, commissions, slippage, borrowing constraints, margin calls, halts and emotional pressure are introduced.

Set up a practice account that resembles your planned live account
The most common simulation error is starting with assumptions you could never tolerate in reality. A very large virtual balance, excessive leverage or a different instrument class can make an otherwise weak process look comfortable. Configure the account around the capital, products and risk limits you would actually use first.
| Setting to define | Practice it this way | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Starting balance | Use the amount you could realistically allocate to the first live phase, not an aspirational account size. | Position sizes, drawdowns and psychological impact scale with balance. |
| Instrument | Use the same symbol type you expect to trade: equities, futures, foreign exchange or another supported market. | Tick size, trading hours, liquidity and contract behavior differ by asset class. |
| Risk limit | Set a fixed maximum loss per trade and a daily or weekly stop that you will obey even when the simulator allows more. | A loss limit turns sizing into a repeatable rule instead of a reaction. |
| Leverage and margin | Enter the leverage or margin assumption you expect, and check the requirement displayed on the order ticket. | Notional exposure can be much larger than account equity. |
| Costs and slippage assumptions | Record the commission, spread and slippage that your eventual broker or venue is likely to impose, even if the simulator does not charge them. | A gross paper result can disappear after real trading costs. |
| Trading schedule | Practice during the sessions and time windows you can actually monitor. | A strategy that requires constant attention is unsuitable if you cannot provide it. |
For futures and other leveraged products, read the margin figure rather than inferring risk from the cash balance. TradingView’s current example states that a 5% margin requirement for E-mini S&P 500 futures corresponds to 20x default leverage. That is a platform simulation of the relationship, not a promise that a live broker will offer the same leverage or maintenance terms.
Place your first simulated trade
Write the plan before opening the ticket
Use one written setup at a time. Before clicking the simulated buy or sell button, record the instrument, timeframe, entry condition, invalidation level, stop distance, target, position size and reason for taking the trade. Writing the plan first prevents the order ticket from becoming a tool for improvising after a price move.

Use the order ticket
The Paper Trading order ticket supports buy and sell instructions, quantity, market, limit and stop order types, price levels, stop loss and take profit. Enter the quantity that fits your predefined risk, not the largest quantity the virtual balance permits. Check the displayed estimated margin or buying-power impact, then review the order direction and prices before submitting.

Practice chart trading
Chart trading lets you place orders directly on the chart, then drag, modify or close them. This is useful for rehearsing the visual workflow you may use during a fast market: place the entry, attach the protective stop and target, and move or cancel orders only when your written rules allow it. Dragging an order for convenience is not a valid reason to widen risk; log every modification and its rule-based justification.
Read Depth of Market
Depth of Market displays bid and ask levels so you can practice reading available quotes and placing orders at specific prices. It can improve order-entry familiarity, but a simulated order book is not a guarantee of the liquidity, queue position or fill quality you will receive at a broker. Treat it as an execution drill rather than a promise of live market depth.
Rehearse order types, stops and take-profits
Do not limit testing to whether an entry eventually made money. Your objective is to learn what happens when an order is submitted, partially or fully filled, adjusted, cancelled or closed. Build a separate exercise for each order behavior:
- Market order: Submit only when immediate execution is part of the setup. Record the simulated fill and compare it with the price visible when you clicked.
- Limit order: Place a specific price and observe whether the market reaches it. Do not count an unfilled order as a missed win; it is evidence about your entry rule and patience.
- Stop order: Define the trigger and the price at which the position should be considered invalid. Test whether your workflow leaves the protective order active after entry.
- Attached stop loss and take profit: Enter both levels with the position and verify that they appear as working orders. Practice closing or replacing them only under a written rule.
- Position reduction or close: Test partial exits and full closes if they are part of your strategy, then check the remaining quantity and open orders.
For every exercise, note the intended price, the simulated fill, the order status and any difference between expectation and result. A simulator can teach you the sequence and interface; it cannot certify that a live venue will fill the same way during a gap or fast move.

Combine Strategy Report, Bar Replay and live Paper Trading
Each tool answers a different question. Using only one leaves an important gap in the test.
| Tool | Data environment | Best question to answer | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy Report | Historical backtest | Did the coded rules produce evidence across many past trades, and what were the net profit, profit factor, win rate, drawdown, run-up, Sharpe ratio, Sortino ratio and individual trade results? | It cannot predict the next market regime or guarantee that historical assumptions match live execution. |
| Bar Replay | Historical candles revealed one step at a time | Can you make a discretionary decision without seeing future bars, and can you follow the entry, stop and target rules? | It does not recreate the uncertainty, news flow, spread or emotional stakes of a live account. |
| Paper Trading | Current market updates with simulated orders and positions | Can you execute alerts, orders, exits and position management in real time while following your risk plan? | It does not reproduce every broker’s routing, fees, borrow availability, margin calls or emotional response. |
A practical sequence
- Use Strategy Report to reject ideas with inadequate historical evidence or unacceptable drawdown under the stated rules.
- Use Bar Replay to practice discretionary choices on unseen historical candles. Record each decision before advancing the chart.
- Use live Paper Trading to rehearse alerts, order entry, protective orders, exits and position management under current updates.
- Compare the three records. Investigate differences instead of selecting whichever result looks best.
Keep the strategy definition unchanged while testing a batch. If you alter entry, stop or target rules after every trade, you are measuring a moving target and cannot tell whether the process improved.
Practice leverage and futures mechanics separately
Leverage increases the market exposure represented by each unit of account equity. A small price movement against a leveraged position can consume the allowed loss quickly, and a stop does not eliminate gap or execution risk. TradingView warns that higher simulated leverage carries significantly higher risk.
For a leveraged setup, calculate the maximum loss before entering:

- Define the account risk limit in currency or as a percentage.
- Measure the distance from entry to invalidation.
- Convert that distance into the loss for one share, contract or unit, using the instrument’s tick or point value.
- Choose a quantity whose planned stop loss is within the risk limit, then verify the margin requirement in the ticket.
- Record the resulting notional exposure and leverage, not just the cash margin.
Futures require an additional checklist. Include contract expiration, rollover decisions and settlement in the test plan. TradingView’s simulated-futures guidance notes that expiration and settlement can affect final results. Practice what happens to the position as the contract approaches expiration instead of assuming that an open simulated trade can remain unchanged indefinitely.
Do not infer that a 20x example is a recommendation. The 5% margin and 20x relationship is a current TradingView example for E-mini S&P 500 futures; live brokers can set different initial and maintenance requirements, and those requirements can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a trade journal that preserves the evidence
Review open positions, working orders and trade history after every session. A useful journal separates the quality of the decision from the outcome of the trade:
Recommended Free Tools
- Market, symbol, date, session and timeframe.
- Setup name and the exact entry condition.
- Planned entry, invalidation, stop distance, target and quantity.
- Actual order type, simulated fill, changes, exit and result.
- Spread or slippage assumption, if any, and the margin shown.
- Whether an alert fired, whether the order was entered correctly and whether any rule was violated.
- Context such as news, volatility or a market halt that affected the decision.
- One specific process change, if evidence supports a change.
Save screenshots or export notes for milestone reviews. TradingView warns that resetting the Paper Trading account deletes transaction history, active orders and open positions. Do not reset until the records needed for analysis have been saved. If you want a fresh experiment, archive the old account evidence first and document the new starting balance and rules.

How long should you paper trade?
There is no universal number of days or trades that guarantees readiness. A calendar target can encourage rushed decisions, while an indefinite simulation can become a way to avoid accepting real uncertainty. Use a process-based gate instead:
- You can explain the strategy’s entry, invalidation and exit rules without relying on hindsight.
- You size every position from a predefined loss limit and can show the calculation.
- You have tested the setup across historical backtests, unseen Bar Replay decisions and live Paper Trading.
- You follow the rules through losing streaks instead of increasing size or changing the setup impulsively.
- Your journal distinguishes rule-following trades from profitable accidents.
- You understand the instrument’s trading hours, order types, leverage, expiration and settlement where relevant.
- You can state which live conditions are not represented by the simulator and how you will control them.
When those conditions are met, begin with the smallest real position that makes the process meaningful. Treat the first live period as another validation stage, keep the same journal and do not increase size merely because a short paper sample was profitable.
Understand the simulator’s realism limits
Paper fills are simulated. Real results can differ because of broker routing, available symbols, bid-ask spread, slippage, commissions, borrow availability, margin calls, market halts and the timing of news. A live trader can also hesitate, move a stop, overtrade after a loss or close a winner too early; virtual money does not reproduce those emotional responses.

These limits do not make Paper Trading useless. They define what it is good for: testing whether you can execute a documented process, whether your order workflow is reliable and whether the strategy’s assumptions survive changing market updates. They also define what requires a separate live safeguard: verified broker costs, current margin rules, locate or borrow availability, order-routing behavior and psychological tolerance for real losses.
| Paper result | Reasonable conclusion | Unreasonable conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Several rule-following trades execute as planned. | Your workflow is becoming repeatable. | The same fills and prices are guaranteed live. |
| Backtest metrics are attractive. | The rules deserve further replay and live-simulation testing. | Future profitability is established. |
| A stop or target behaves as expected in simulation. | You understand the platform’s order workflow. | A live stop eliminates gap or slippage risk. |
| High leverage produces large simulated returns. | The position has high exposure and needs strict risk controls. | High leverage is a safe way to accelerate account growth. |
A repeatable pre-live checklist
Before each simulated session
- Confirm the Paper Trading connection and the correct symbol.
- Write the day’s maximum loss, setup limits and trading hours.
- Check contract, margin and expiration details for futures or other leveraged products.
- Mark planned entry, invalidation and target levels before looking for an order.
During each trade
- Use the order type specified by the setup rather than switching after a price move.
- Verify quantity, margin impact, stop and take-profit orders before submitting.
- Record modifications immediately and state the rule that allowed them.
- Stop for the session when the predefined loss or rule-violation limit is reached.
After the session
- Review fills, open orders, positions and transaction history.
- Tag each result as a rule-following win, rule-following loss, execution error or rule violation.
- Save the journal and supporting screenshots before changing account settings or resetting the simulator.
- Review batches of trades rather than redesigning the strategy after one outcome.
Bottom line: use Paper Trading to validate a process, not to promise profits
Connect through Trade → Paper Trading → Connect, mirror your intended account assumptions, and practice the complete sequence from written plan to order, protective stop, target, review and journal entry. Combine Strategy Report for historical evidence, Bar Replay for decision practice and live Paper Trading for current execution. Test leverage and futures expiration deliberately, preserve your history and move to real money only with the smallest position that fits a documented risk limit. The simulator can show whether your process is prepared; only live conditions reveal how that process behaves when fills, costs and real losses matter.
