To toggle Caps Lock without changing anything, hold Alt and press that key. Press the same combination again to turn Caps Lock off. On keyboards that support it, Fn + Quick Insert is an alternative.
If you want a one-key Caps Lock control instead, remap Search or Launcher in Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys. That is more convenient for frequent uppercase typing, but the key will no longer open Search or the Launcher by itself.

What the Chromebook key actually does
Chromebooks generally do not have a traditional Caps Lock key. In its place is a key marked with a magnifying-glass icon, the word Search, or the word Launcher. Google uses both names in its documentation, so the label depends on the keyboard and ChromeOS interface you are using. The physical key is the same key for this purpose.

The Launcher is where you can find installed apps, files, settings, and other Chromebook features. Google describes that function in its Launcher menu and Explore app help.

Caps Lock is still available; it is simply assigned to a shortcut rather than a dedicated key. Google’s official keyboard instructions list three possible methods: Alt + Search, Alt + Launcher, or Fn + Quick Insert on keyboards that support the latter. See Use your Chromebook keyboard for Google’s current wording.
Toggle Caps Lock without changing any settings
The default shortcut is the safest option when you occasionally need capital letters because it leaves the Search or Launcher key’s normal behavior intact.
- Place the cursor in the text field where you want to type.
- Hold down Alt.
- While holding Alt, tap the key labeled Search or Launcher.
- Release both keys and type. Caps Lock is now enabled.
- Repeat the same two-key combination when you want to disable Caps Lock.
The shortcut changes the Caps Lock state; it does not open the Launcher while you are using it as a Caps Lock command. When Caps Lock is off, the key returns to its normal Search or Launcher role when pressed by itself.

Use the alternate shortcut when available
Some Chromebook keyboards include a Quick Insert key or support Quick Insert through the function row. On those keyboards, Google lists Fn + Quick Insert as another Caps Lock toggle. It is not a universal replacement for the Alt shortcut, so if nothing happens, use the Search or Launcher combination instead. The availability of this option depends on the keyboard layout and hardware documented by Google.
Do you have to hold the keys in a special order?
Keep Alt held while you tap Search or Launcher, then release them. A quick, deliberate press is more reliable than holding both keys for several seconds. If you are using an external keyboard, first identify which physical key ChromeOS treats as Search; the equivalent key is explained below.

Make Search or Launcher act as Caps Lock by itself
Remapping is useful if you type long passages in uppercase, use Caps Lock frequently, or find a two-key shortcut awkward. It changes the assignment for that key, so decide whether you still need one-press access to Search or the Launcher before applying it.
- Sign in to the Chromebook.
- Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Open Device, then select Keyboard.
- Under Built-in keyboard, select Remap keyboard keys.
- Find the entry for Search or Launcher.
- Set its action to Caps Lock.
Close Settings and press the remapped key once to toggle Caps Lock. Google’s broader Create input shortcuts documentation confirms that keyboard assignments can be customized and that Caps Lock is one of the available actions.
What changes after remapping
The key now behaves as Caps Lock whenever you press it by itself. Its original Search or Launcher action is no longer directly assigned to that key. This is a functional trade-off, not a second Caps Lock mode: you gain one-key capitalization and give up one-key Launcher access.
If you later decide that the original behavior was more useful, return to the same remapping screen and assign the key back to Search or Launcher. Menu names can change slightly as ChromeOS settings are updated, but the relevant controls remain in the keyboard settings area.
Keep both functions available
There is no need to remap the key if you want both capabilities without changing assignments. Leave Search or Launcher mapped normally and use the two-key Caps Lock shortcut when you need capitals. This preserves one-press Launcher access and avoids having to switch the assignment back and forth.

Shortcut or remapping: which setup fits you?
| Setup | How Caps Lock is triggered | Search or Launcher key by itself | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Default mapping | Alt plus Search or Launcher | Remains available | Occasional uppercase typing; users who rely on the Launcher | Requires two keys |
| Remapped key | Press Search or Launcher alone | No longer assigned directly | Frequent Caps Lock use; users who prefer a single key | Launcher access must be reached another way |
| Supported alternate shortcut | Fn plus Quick Insert | Search or Launcher mapping is unchanged | Keyboards that include or support Quick Insert | Not available on every Chromebook keyboard |
Choose the default mapping when opening apps, files, or settings from the Launcher is part of your normal workflow. Choose remapping when the convenience of a dedicated, one-key Caps Lock action outweighs that direct access. Neither choice changes the Chromebook’s text or file data; it only changes which command the key sends.

Using an external keyboard
An external keyboard may not have a key labeled Search or Launcher. ChromeOS assigns an equivalent physical key so common Chromebook shortcuts continue to work. Google’s Chromebook keyboard shortcuts reference identifies the following equivalents:
| Keyboard connected to Chromebook | Search-equivalent key | Caps Lock shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook keyboard | Search or Launcher | Alt plus Search or Launcher |
| Windows keyboard | Windows key | Alt plus the Windows key |
| Mac keyboard | Command key | Alt plus the Command key |
The Windows or Command key is acting as the Chromebook’s Search-equivalent key in this context; it is not being converted into a physical Chromebook key. If the combination does not work, test the key that opens the Launcher on your particular external keyboard and use that key with Alt.
External-keyboard remapping limits
The documented remapping path is under Built-in keyboard. Google’s instructions establish how to remap the Chromebook’s integrated keyboard, but they do not promise that every external keyboard will expose the same remapping controls. For an external keyboard, the default shortcut is the dependable first test. If you need a permanent one-key assignment, check whether the keyboard appears as a remappable device in your Chromebook’s Keyboard settings before changing anything.
What to check when the shortcut seems unreliable
Google’s help pages provide the shortcut and remapping procedure, but they do not identify one universal reason that the combination might fail intermittently. Work through the checks below to isolate the assignment, the keys, or the keyboard being used.

1. Confirm the key’s current assignment
Open Settings > Device > Keyboard and inspect Remap keyboard keys under Built-in keyboard. If Search or Launcher has already been assigned another action, the default Caps Lock shortcut may not behave as expected. Restore the key to Search or Launcher if you want the standard mapping, or leave it assigned to Caps Lock and use it as a single-key toggle.
2. Test Alt and Search or Launcher separately
Press the Search or Launcher key by itself. It should open the search or Launcher interface when it has its normal assignment. Press Alt with another familiar shortcut to verify that the Alt key responds. Testing the two keys independently helps distinguish a shortcut problem from a key that is not registering.
3. Check which physical key is being used
On an external keyboard, do not assume the key position matches the Chromebook layout. Use the Windows key on a Windows keyboard or the Command key on a Mac keyboard as the Search equivalent, as described in Google’s shortcut reference. If you have remapped keys, use the action currently shown in Keyboard settings rather than relying on the printed symbol.
4. Try the documented alternative
If your keyboard supports Quick Insert, try Fn + Quick Insert. If that does not produce a Caps Lock state change, return to the Alt-based method; Quick Insert support is hardware-dependent.

6. Undo an accidental remap
If the key began behaving differently after a settings change, revisit the remapping screen and assign it back to Search or Launcher. Then test the default two-key shortcut again. This restores the normal division between Launcher access and Caps Lock.
7. Separate a documented behavior from an unsupported one
Google documents the shortcut, the key equivalents for external keyboards, and the built-in keyboard remapping path. It does not establish a single ChromeOS-wide cause for every intermittent failure. Avoid assuming that a particular app, keyboard brand, or ChromeOS release is always responsible; first verify the assignment and whether each key responds on its own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to switch back after trying Caps Lock remapping
To restore the original Chromebook layout, open the time menu, choose Settings, then go to Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys. Under Built-in keyboard, change the Search or Launcher entry back to its corresponding Search or Launcher action. The key will again open the Launcher by itself, and Caps Lock will be available through the Alt-based shortcut.
This reversible approach is useful when you are testing which arrangement suits your work. You do not need a replacement keyboard, key sticker, or additional software to use either configuration.
Practical choices for different typing habits
You only need capitals occasionally
Keep the factory mapping. The two-key shortcut gives you Caps Lock when needed while preserving the key’s normal access to apps, files, and settings.
You type all-caps passages regularly
Remap Search or Launcher to Caps Lock so the toggle is a single press. Before doing so, make sure you are comfortable opening the Launcher through another available route because the key’s direct action has changed.
You alternate between a Chromebook keyboard and an external keyboard
Leave the Chromebook’s mapping at its default unless both keyboards are configured and tested. On the external keyboard, use its Windows or Command key as the Search equivalent. This keeps the shortcut concept consistent even though the physical keys differ.
You share the Chromebook with other people
The default mapping is usually less surprising because it preserves the layout expected by other users. If you remap the key, tell anyone else who uses the device that the Search or Launcher key now controls Caps Lock and explain how to restore the original assignment in Keyboard settings.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher toggles Caps Lock on a standard Chromebook layout.
- Fn + Quick Insert works only on keyboards that support that combination.
- Remapping Search or Launcher to Caps Lock creates a one-key toggle but removes its direct Launcher action.
- On external keyboards, the Windows or Command key serves as the Search-equivalent key for the shortcut.
- The remapping controls are found at Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys.
