Samsung’s built-in screenshot gesture is called Palm swipe to capture. Place the edge of your hand on the display and sweep across it. On Samsung’s current US support instructions, enable it from Quick panel > Settings > Advanced features > Palm swipe to capture. Samsung has not published a support page that specifically verifies the menu path for One UI 8.5, so labels can differ by Galaxy model, carrier, country, and software build.
Enable Palm swipe to capture
Use this route first. It follows Samsung’s general US guidance, but One UI 8.5 may show a slightly different arrangement.
- Swipe down from the top-right edge with two fingers to open the Quick panel.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Open Advanced features.
- Tap Palm swipe to capture.
- Turn the switch on.
You can also open the Settings app and search for Palm swipe to capture. Search is useful when Samsung has moved the control or your carrier’s software uses different labels.
Why your menu may not match
Samsung Hong Kong documents a longer route: Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture. That page is written for Hong Kong products and warns that menus vary by model, One UI or Android version, and country. Treat the US path above as general guidance, not a guaranteed One UI 8.5 layout. If Settings search returns no result, consult the manual for your exact model and check for system updates.

Take a screenshot with the hand gesture
- Open the screen you want to save.
- Hold the edge of your hand against one side of the display. Your little-finger edge should touch the glass; do not start with your palm flat across the screen.
- Sweep steadily across the entire display in one horizontal motion.
- Release after crossing to the opposite edge.
Samsung describes the function as: “Palm swipe to capture: Swipe the edge of your hand across the screen to take a quick screenshot.” A successful capture normally produces a brief screen flash and a screenshot toolbar. The exact animation and toolbar controls depend on the device and software build.
Technique that makes the gesture reliable
- Use a deliberate, continuous sweep rather than a short tap or diagonal brush.
- Keep contact light. Pressing hard can trigger a touch, drag, or navigation gesture instead.
- Try both directions; the feature is intended to recognize a sweep across the display, regardless of direction.
- Remove anything that prevents the edge of your hand from contacting the glass, such as a very raised case lip or thick gloves.
- Practice on the Home screen first, where no app-specific security policy interferes.
What to do when Palm swipe does not work
The keyboard is open
Samsung’s US gestures guidance says Palm swipe to capture is unavailable while the on-screen keyboard is showing. Dismiss the keyboard, tap an empty part of the page, and try again. For a screen dominated by a keyboard, use the button method instead.
The setting is missing
Availability varies by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung also notes that carrier and regional editions can differ. Search Settings for Palm swipe and capture; if neither finds the option, your device may not support the gesture or your build may place it under a different Motions and gestures menu.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

The swipe is interpreted as navigation
Start with the narrow edge of your hand, keep the movement level, and cross most of the screen. A case that overlaps the active display area can make the first contact inconsistent. Temporarily remove the case to test whether it is the cause.
The app blocks screenshots
Some banking, streaming, password, enterprise, and other protected screens intentionally prevent captures for privacy or security. A black result, warning, or no response on one particular screen does not necessarily indicate a gesture problem. Test another app or the Home screen before changing settings.
The phone reacts slowly or misses a sweep
Wait for the page to finish loading, then make one clean motion. If the device is busy, repeated partial swipes can be mistaken for ordinary touch input. Restarting the phone can clear a temporary gesture-service problem; after rebooting, confirm the setting is still enabled.

Use the button fallback
For a dependable alternative, press the Power/Side key and Volume Down together, then release after a brief moment. Holding them too long can open the power menu or change the volume instead of taking a screenshot. Samsung documents this combination as a general method, including on devices where Palm swipe is unavailable.
Capture a long page with Scroll capture
After a normal screenshot, look for the screenshot toolbar at the bottom of the display. If the current page supports scrolling, tap the Scroll capture control (usually shown with downward arrows). Keep tapping or holding it until the required portion is included, then finish the capture. Scroll capture depends on the app exposing scrollable content; it will not turn a non-scrolling screen into a long image, and protected apps may disable it.

Edit, share, and find the image
Use the toolbar immediately after capture to crop, draw, add text, or share. If the toolbar disappears, open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. Samsung’s layout can vary, but screenshots are normally grouped in that Screenshots album. From Gallery you can edit the image, send it to another app, move it to a different album, or delete it.

Choose the capture method for the job
| Method | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Palm swipe to capture | A quick gesture without pressing hardware keys | Unavailable while the keyboard is showing; support varies by model and software |
| Power/Side + Volume Down | A consistent fallback when the gesture fails | Requires pressing two physical keys at once |
| Scroll capture | One image containing a long, scrollable page | Appears only when the app permits scrolling capture |
| S Pen Screen write | Annotating or writing on compatible Galaxy devices | Only available on models that support an S Pen and the feature |
These methods are complementary rather than competing versions of the same feature. Palm swipe is convenient, the keys are a fallback, Scroll capture extends a page, and S Pen tools are for compatible pen-equipped devices.
Privacy and security limits
Android and individual apps can block screenshots to protect payment details, copyrighted video, passwords, or managed business data. Do not attempt to bypass those controls. If a screenshot is essential, use an approved export, download, print, or sharing function supplied by the app or your organization.

- Confirm the phone is actually running One UI 8.5 and note its Galaxy model and carrier edition.
- Search Settings for Palm swipe to capture if the documented path is different.
- Enable the switch, then test on the Home screen.
- Close the keyboard before swiping.
- Try the Side/Power plus Volume Down method to distinguish a gesture issue from an app restriction.
- Check whether only one protected app refuses captures.
Because Samsung’s published pages describe general behavior rather than a One UI 8.5-specific menu confirmation, the setting name and location on your phone are the final authority.

If what you need is a screenshot of a website for documentation, testing, reports, or an AI workflow—not a picture of your Galaxy’s current display—ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full parameter list. The service supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
