The S Pen works as both a precise touch tool and, on compatible tablet-and-pen combinations, a Bluetooth remote. Touch the tip to the screen to write, draw, select, or navigate without pairing. Wireless features such as Air Actions, battery reporting, charging and remote media controls are optional, so their absence does not necessarily indicate a fault. Start by identifying your exact Galaxy Tab model, then open Settings and search for S Pen; Samsung notes that labels and available features vary by model, software version and market.
Identify your tablet and inspect its S Pen settings
Samsung uses the S Pen name across many Galaxy Tab generations, but the hardware and software feature set is not identical. Before following a menu path or buying a replacement, check the model shown in Settings → About tablet or on the tablet’s packaging. Then open Settings, search for S Pen, and review the entries your tablet actually displays. Samsung’s guide documents options such as Air actions, Screen off memo, Create note with the pen button and Air view, while warning that not every tablet supports each item. See Samsung’s current guide, Master the S Pen of your Galaxy Tablet.

- If a setting named in an instruction is missing, do not assume the pen is defective. The tablet may not support that function, or your software may use a different label.
- Install available tablet software updates before troubleshooting, then search Settings for “S Pen” again.
- Keep basic writing separate from wireless functions: a pen can write normally without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), charging, a battery indicator or Air Actions.
Use the S Pen for basic writing, drawing and touch
For ordinary input, place the S Pen tip on the display and write, draw, tap, drag or select items just as you would with a finger. This basic input does not require Bluetooth pairing on pens that lack BLE. Hovering the tip just above the display can reveal contextual controls on supported models.
- Hold the pen as you would a normal writing instrument and bring the tip close to the screen.
- Touch the tip to a text area, canvas or control to begin writing, drawing or tapping.
- Lift the pen to finish a stroke. Use the tablet app’s own undo, eraser and selection controls when you need to revise work.
- For shortcuts, hover over the display and tap the floating Air command icon when it appears.
On supported configurations, pressing the pen’s side button can also open Air command. If that does nothing, use the floating icon and check the S Pen settings for an option such as Create note with the pen button. Samsung cautions that the icon, button behavior and available controls differ by model and software.

Open and customize Air command
Air command is the S Pen shortcut panel. It gathers supported note, capture, translation and other tools in one place, but its contents are not universal.
- Hover the S Pen over the screen and tap the floating Air command icon, or use the pen-button shortcut if your model supports it.
- Choose a tool from the panel. Depending on your tablet and software, you may see Create note, View all notes, Smart select or AI Select, Screen write, Translate, PENUP and Live messages.
- To add an available app shortcut, open Air command’s settings or add-shortcut control and select the apps offered by your tablet.
Samsung’s newer tablet instructions call the screen-selection tool AI Select; other models show Smart select. Treat those as model-specific labels rather than interchangeable features available on every Galaxy Tab. The full set of tools and shortcut-management steps is documented in Samsung’s Galaxy tablet S Pen guide.
Take notes in Samsung Notes
Create a quick note from Air command
- Open Air command.
- Tap Create note. Samsung Notes opens a new note.
- Write with the S Pen, add any other content supported by Samsung Notes, and tap Back when finished. Samsung says the note is saved when you go back.
Open notes you already saved
Open Air command and choose View all notes to reach notes stored in Samsung Notes. If that shortcut is not shown, open Samsung Notes directly from the app list; the absence of an Air command shortcut does not erase saved notes.
Write while the screen is off
On supported tablets, Screen off memo lets you write without unlocking first. With the display off, press and hold the S Pen button while tapping the screen with the pen. Write the memo, then save it to Samsung Notes. If the gesture does not start a memo, search Settings for “S Pen” and look for Screen off memo; many models do not include it.

Convert handwriting to typed text
Samsung supports handwriting input in text fields on compatible devices. The feature is commonly called S Pen to text and is enabled by default according to Samsung.
- Tap a text field so the on-screen keyboard appears.
- Hover the S Pen over the field or keyboard and select the handwriting icon when it is offered.
- Write in the input area. The tablet converts the strokes into typed text.
- Continue typing with the keyboard or switch back to the standard keyboard layout when finished.
The exact icon and keyboard layout depend on the device and software version. To check the feature, open Settings, search for S Pen, and look for the S Pen-to-text option. Samsung describes this workflow in its official S Pen guide.
Select, capture and annotate what is on screen
Smart select or AI Select
Open Air command and choose the selection tool your tablet provides: Smart select on some models or AI Select on newer supported software. Draw or adjust the selection around the screen content, then use the actions offered by your tablet. Samsung’s newer guide includes an option to add selected content to a note. Because names and actions vary, follow the controls displayed on your screen rather than expecting a particular tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScreen write
Screen write, where available, captures the current screen and lets you annotate it with the S Pen. Open Air command, select Screen write, mark up the captured image, and use the save or share controls presented by the tablet. If Screen write is absent, your model or software may not include it.

Other Air command tools
Depending on the tablet, Air command may include translation, Live messages, PENUP and additional shortcuts. These tools are optional modules, not a standard promise for every S Pen. Samsung’s feature list and labels are maintained in its Galaxy tablet support article.
Set up Air Actions for remote gestures
Air Actions are wireless controls that use the S Pen button and gestures in compatible apps. They require a tablet-and-pen combination with BLE support; basic writing alone does not prove that Air Actions are available.
- Open Settings → Advanced features → S Pen → Air actions on a tablet that supports the menu.
- Turn Air actions on.
- Select an app or command and review the gesture assigned to it.
- Hold the S Pen’s side button while making the configured gesture. Keep the pen oriented and moving as shown by the on-screen instructions.
Available gestures, apps and commands vary. Samsung’s compatibility article, Learn about the different Samsung S Pens, is the authority for a specific model and pen. Samsung lists multiple FE, Lite and newer Tab generations and S Pen variants without BLE or Air Actions, so do not infer support from the pen’s appearance.

Understand pairing, charging and the S Pen battery
BLE-equipped pens can communicate with the tablet for remote commands. Depending on the model, the pen may need to be stored in a designated charging area or connected in another supported way. The tablet may show a battery percentage only when both the pen and tablet support that reporting. A non-BLE pen can still deliver normal writing and touch input but will not pair, charge, report a battery level or perform Air Actions.

For this reason, “the pen does not appear in Bluetooth” is not automatically a fault. First compare the exact pen and tablet models against Samsung’s compatibility information. Do not try to force a generic pairing procedure onto a pen designed only for basic input.
Choose a replacement or an additional S Pen
Samsung recommends matching the pen to the exact tablet model; its tablet guide says, “please use only the S Pen specifically designed for your tablet model.” Verify the model before ordering or borrowing a pen, and decide which functions you actually need.
| Capability to check | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model compatibility | Is the pen listed for this Galaxy Tab model? | A pen can fit or write yet lack the tablet’s wireless features. |
| Basic writing and touch | Will the tip write, draw and navigate on this screen? | This is separate from Bluetooth and is the core input function. |
| BLE pairing | Does the pen communicate wirelessly with this tablet? | Required for remote controls and some configuration features. |
| Charging and battery display | Does this pen charge on the tablet, and can the tablet show its battery? | Neither function is universal, even among S Pens. |
| Air Actions | Are button gestures supported on this pen, tablet and intended apps? | Support can be excluded for particular model combinations. |
| Multi-device use | Do you need one pen for several supported Galaxy devices? | The S Pen Pro can be a conditional option, but compatibility remains model- and function-specific. |
The S Pen Pro features guide describes Pro capabilities and exclusions. Check both the tablet and pen entries in Samsung’s current compatibility guide before purchase; compatibility lists can change as new devices launch. No universal price, stock status or third-party listing should be assumed from the model name alone.

Troubleshoot by the function that fails
The pen will not write or touch the screen
- Confirm the tip physically reaches the display and test several apps. A single app may have its own input setting.
- Remove dirt, moisture or a damaged screen protector that prevents the tip from registering.
- Restart the tablet and install available software updates.
- Test another pen known to be compatible with the exact tablet. If the second pen works, the original pen may need replacement or service.
These checks concern basic input. They do not establish whether the pen supports BLE or Air Actions.

Air Actions or gestures do nothing
- Confirm that both the tablet and pen support Air Actions. If the Air actions menu is absent, the combination may not support BLE remote features.
- Keep the pen within range. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance specifies up to 30 feet (9.1 metres) unobstructed for Air Actions.
- Check the pen’s charge when the model requires charging.
- Open the tablet’s app permissions and allow Air command permissions such as Nearby devices and Physical activity when requested.
- Remove or reposition third-party cases, magnetic covers or other accessories that could interfere, then test again.
Samsung’s detailed troubleshooting steps are at Galaxy device not responding to S Pen Air actions or gestures.
Reset a BLE S Pen
On supported models, open Settings → Advanced features → S Pen → More options → Reset S Pen. Resetting restores customized remote settings to their defaults. The reset control is unavailable on tablets or pens without BLE, so its absence is expected in that case.
Isolate the failed component
Try another compatible pen on your tablet, or test the original pen on another compatible Galaxy device. If the pen fails on compatible devices after the checks above, Samsung recommends replacement or service. If it works elsewhere, investigate the tablet’s compatibility, permissions, software or accessories instead.

- Record the exact Galaxy Tab model and software version.
- Search Settings for “S Pen” and note which menus exist.
- Test basic writing before attempting pairing or Air Actions.
- Open Air command and identify the tools your tablet actually provides.
- Create and save a Samsung Notes note, then test S Pen to text in a text field.
- Test Screen off memo only if the setting is present.
- For a replacement, match the pen to the tablet model and separately verify BLE, charging, battery display and Air Actions.
- When remote controls fail, check compatibility, range, charge, permissions and accessories before resetting or replacing the pen.
What the S Pen can and cannot do on your Galaxy tablet
Every S Pen workflow starts with the tip: writing, drawing and touch actions generally do not require pairing. Air command adds shortcuts to notes, screen tools and supported apps, while Samsung Notes provides quick notes, saved-note access, handwriting conversion and, on selected models, screen-off memos. Air Actions are a separate BLE feature with their own model, pen and app requirements. Treat the compatibility table for your exact tablet as the final authority, and select a model-matched replacement rather than assuming that every S Pen offers the same wireless functions.
