- Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.
Prerequisites before you start
Before you try to track a route, confirm the basics. Most “Route tracker didn’t work” complaints come down to GPS permission, location services, or watch app not being allowed to run.
Hardware and app requirements
- Device: Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
- System: Wear OS (Samsung One UI Watch)
- Primary app: Samsung Health
- Connection (recommended): Samsung Health sync works best with a paired Galaxy phone
Minimum setup checklist
- Update Samsung Health on your watch if updates are available.
- Enable Location services on the watch (required for GPS-based routing).
- Grant Samsung Health permission to access location.
- Make sure the watch has a clear view of the sky for the first 1–2 minutes outdoors.
Set up the best route tracking performance
Even if you can start tracking right away, a few settings can drastically improve route quality and reduce battery drain.
Turn on GPS and location permissions
- On your Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Enable Location.
- Open App permissions (or Permissions, depending on your watch UI).
- Find Samsung Health and set location access to Allow.
If you don’t see the permission option on-watch, verify it from your paired phone (Samsung Health app settings and Android location permissions).
Confirm Samsung Health has the right exercise settings
- Open Samsung Health on the watch.
- Go to Settings (gear icon) inside Samsung Health.
- Look for exercise or location-related options (labels vary by version), then enable route/GPS tracking if there’s a toggle.
Samsung frequently changes wording across app versions, but you should see something that corresponds to location/GPS or route recording.
Choose an environment for the first GPS lock
For best results, start your route after the watch finds GPS. Outdoors with clear sky improves accuracy more than any setting you can toggle later.
Start tracking a route (the standard way)
Route tracker behavior can vary slightly by Samsung Health version. The most reliable approach is to use the Samsung Health route/tracker feature if it’s available in your app menus.
Start Route tracker from Samsung Health
- Open Samsung Health on your Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.
- Find Route tracker (sometimes grouped under activities or tracking).
- Tap Start (or Record).
- Wait for the GPS connection indicator to stabilize (if you see one).
- Walk, hike, run, or cycle as normal.
- Tap Stop when you’re done.
- Confirm Save if prompted.
After saving, you’ll typically find your route in Samsung Health history, where you can review the track and stats.
If Route tracker isn’t visible on your watch
Some regions/watch configurations don’t show a dedicated “Route tracker” tile. If you don’t see it, use the workout-based route tracking method (next section). It produces the same practical outcome: a GPS path you can review.

- Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.
Track a route from Samsung Health workouts
When Route tracker isn’t available as a standalone tile, workout tracking is the most dependable alternative for recording your GPS route.
Use Walking or Running to capture GPS route
- Open Samsung Health.
- Tap Workout (or Exercise), then select Walking or Running.
- Before you start, check for a GPS or Route toggle in the workout setup (if present).
- Tap Start.
- Complete your activity.
- Tap Stop and save the workout to keep the route record.
This approach often creates the route trail automatically because the workout requires location data.
Using the map view and stats while tracking
During a route, you’ll usually see a live map preview and summary stats. The exact fields depend on your watch model, watch UI theme, and Samsung Health version.
What to look for during the run
- GPS status: If it shows a weak/connecting state, don’t judge the route quality yet.
- Distance and time: Often shown as large metrics on the main screen.
- Map trail: You may see a dotted/solid line that fills as location updates come in.
How to change what’s displayed
On many Samsung Health screens, you can swipe or tap to change the metric layout. If map view isn’t showing, check the workout/track screen options and enable map/route display.
Save, view, and share your route
After you stop tracking, the watch should save your route to Samsung Health. From there, you can view the line, metrics, and—depending on your phone settings—share a route summary.
Where to find saved routes
- On your Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, open Samsung Health.
- Go to History (sometimes under Activity).
- Open the specific route/workout you recorded.
- Look for a Map or Route tab/panel to view the path.
For longer tracking sessions, route thumbnails on the phone often make it easier to spot the right activity.
Share options you may see
- Share a workout summary: distance/time/pace screenshot-style card
- Share from your phone: export to other apps (depends on Samsung Health features on your region and phone)
- Social sharing: share image cards to messaging/social apps if enabled
If sharing isn’t available on-watch, check sharing from the Samsung Health mobile app, where options are often richer.
Exporting route data (where supported)
Some Samsung Health setups allow route export or integration with map/routing apps. Availability depends on software versions and your phone’s Samsung Health configuration.

Check export/share from the phone app
- On your paired phone, open Samsung Health.
- Go to History or Activities.
- Select your recorded route.
- Look for Share, Export, or an action menu (three dots).
If you don’t see an export option, it typically means your specific build doesn’t expose GPS trail files to third-party apps. In that case, sharing the route summary card is usually the practical workaround.
Accuracy and battery tips for GPS tracking
Route quality is mostly about how quickly you get a GPS lock and how consistent the location signal is. Battery life is about how often the watch updates GPS during the track.
Improve route accuracy
- Start outdoors and give it 60–120 seconds to settle.
- Avoid dense tree cover or canyons for the first few minutes.
- Keep the watch snug—loose fit can worsen optical sensors and may indirectly affect tracking confidence.
Reduce battery drain without ruining the route
- Use route tracking only when you need it.
- Turn off extra sensors you’re not using (if your workout screen offers optional sensor toggles).
- Lower screen brightness or shorten display-on time if your watch UI allows it.
Watch LTE (optional) and how it affects GPS
The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can include LTE variants. LTE can help with connectivity to the phone/cloud but doesn’t replace GPS. For route accuracy, clear sky still matters most.
Common issues and troubleshooting
If your route looks jagged, missing segments, or fails to save, work through these checks in order. They cover the highest-frequency failure points.
Problem: Route track is blank or never saves
- Confirm you had location enabled on the watch: Settings > Location.
- Confirm Samsung Health location permission is set to Allow.
- Try again outdoors for the first minute to ensure GPS lock.
- Restart Samsung Health and try a short 5-minute route test.
Problem: Route line looks offset or jumps around
- Wait for GPS lock before you start walking (or start after the connecting indicator stabilizes).
- In open areas, retest to compare—if it’s fine outdoors but bad under trees/buildings, environment is the cause.
- Check for power saving modes that throttle sensors during tracking.
Problem: GPS drops mid-route
- Keep the watch on your wrist and minimize tight sleeve interference.
- Move to a more open area for a few minutes to reacquire satellite signals.
- Turn off any experimental battery optimization that restricts background location for Samsung Health.
Problem: You tracked fine, but you can’t find the route in history
- Verify you tapped Save after stopping.
- Check History on both watch and phone; sync can take a minute.
- Update Samsung Health on both devices.
Problem: Route tracker tile is missing
This usually comes down to app version, region, or Samsung Health layout changes. Use the workout-based method (Walking/Running) to record GPS route as a reliable fallback.
Privacy and permission checklist
Route tracking involves location data. If you’re troubleshooting saving/sync, privacy settings can be the real culprit.
What to verify
- Location permission: Samsung Health allowed to access location.
- Watch location setting: Location enabled in Settings.
- Background permissions: If your phone is set to restrict background activity, Samsung Health may be blocked from syncing or saving.
- Health data sharing: Confirm Samsung Health is permitted to store and view exercise history.
Route tracker vs other tracking options
You have a few ways to track outdoors. Choosing the right one depends on whether you want the simplest route line or deeper stats.

FAQs
Does Route tracker work without my phone nearby?
Typically, yes. Your Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can record GPS tracks independently. Syncing the route to the Samsung Health history on the phone may require Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi/LTE depending on your settings.
Why is my route line curved or zig-zagged?
GPS drift happens, especially near buildings, under heavy tree cover, or during poor satellite reception. Waiting for GPS lock before starting usually reduces it a lot.
Can I track cycling routes with Route tracker?
Yes if you use a workout type that supports GPS route recording (often within Cycling or another outdoor workout mode). If you don’t see a dedicated Cycling route tile, try a workout that reliably logs location.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long should I wait for GPS to lock?
In good conditions, 30–60 seconds is common. If the sky is blocked, give it 1–2 minutes before you begin your main activity segment.
Will enabling more sensors improve route accuracy?
Usually, no. Route accuracy is primarily GPS/location performance. Extra sensors can add battery usage and noise to your health metrics without fixing the GPS path.
Bottom Line
To get reliable route lines on your Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, focus on two things: permissions (Location + Samsung Health) and GPS lock time outdoors. Once that’s set, starting Route tracker—or a GPS-capable Walking/Running workout—becomes a fast, repeatable workflow.
If anything goes wrong, treat it like troubleshooting a signal: verify permissions, test a short 5-minute route, then compare results in open vs obstructed areas. You’ll quickly identify whether the issue is settings, environment, or a missing app feature.
