What the Magic Pro can—and cannot—tell you
RISION lists the Magic Pro, model AF02, for household screening tasks such as finding possible energy loss around openings, checking HVAC equipment, spotting moisture-related patterns and identifying potentially overheating electrical connections. The camera displays temperature contrasts on visible surfaces; several different conditions can produce similar patterns. A cool patch, for example, does not by itself establish that outside air is entering, and a warm patch does not identify its source.

The manufacturer says thermal imaging detects only surface temperature and cannot see through glass or water. Reflections, material emissivity, ambient conditions and measurement settings can also affect readings. Treat the display as a clue for follow-up inspection, not a diagnosis.

Check the device and image before scanning
RISION says the Magic Pro connects over USB-C and is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices. Check that your phone or PC and connector are supported before use. The listed package includes a USB-C extension cable, carrying pouch and quick-start guide.

The manufacturer lists a native thermal resolution of 256 × 192 and a 512 × 384 “super resolution” mode. The latter is the vendor’s enhanced-resolution figure, not the native sensor resolution. Other manufacturer-published specifications are ≤40 mK NETD, a 25 Hz frame rate, a measurement range of −20°C to 600°C, and stated accuracy of ±2°C or ±2% of the reading. These are product-page specifications, not independent test results. RISION notes that actual accuracy depends on factors including target material, emissivity, distance, ambient temperature, humidity and reflections.
- Refresh the shutter calibration if the image needs it.
- Gently clean the lens with a suitable soft cloth.
- Keep a suitable distance from the surface and adjust focus if your model supports manual focus.
- Avoid prolonged close-range pointing at extremely hot targets.
RISION also says environmental conditions and the connected device’s performance can affect clarity. Its specification page lists an effective measurement distance within 5 m (16.4 ft); that is a manufacturer-stated limit, not a guarantee that every target will produce a useful reading at that distance.

Scan likely problem areas consistently
Compare the suspected area with nearby surfaces under similar conditions. Move across each area methodically, looking for abrupt or persistent differences rather than treating a single color or temperature as a fault. The manufacturer’s household use cases suggest these places to check:

Doors and windows
Scan around the perimeter of a door or window and compare the frame, surrounding wall and nearby surfaces. A cooler band could be consistent with air infiltration or an insulation difference, but the image alone cannot distinguish those causes from other influences. The camera cannot inspect through the glass, so assess visible frame and wall surfaces instead.

Walls and ceilings
Look for localized temperature patterns and compare them with nearby areas of the same visible surface. A difference may warrant further investigation, but it does not prove missing insulation or moisture. Materials, reflections and room conditions can affect the apparent pattern.
HVAC equipment
Use the camera to screen visible equipment surfaces for unexpected warm or cool areas. A local contrast may be a reason to check operation or request an HVAC assessment; the thermal image does not identify the mechanical cause.

Accessible electrical components
Screen only components you can observe safely without opening equipment or exposing yourself to live parts. An unusually warm area merits qualified electrical follow-up. A thermal camera does not make electrical work safe or establish that a connection is defective.
Capture observations and arrange follow-up
RISION describes app functions for measuring temperature at points, along lines and across areas, capturing images or video with temperature data, and creating PDF reports. The product information does not specify the current app’s exact button-by-button sequence, so use the current manual or in-app guidance for those controls rather than relying on guessed menu names.

For a useful record, note the location and what nearby surface you compared it with, then save the image or measurement data if your app version supports it. Share the observation with an appropriate qualified professional when a pattern persists or involves a concern: HVAC service for equipment, an electrician for suspected electrical overheating, or a building-envelope or moisture specialist for unexplained wall, ceiling, door or window patterns.
What to keep in mind about the specifications
The figures above are published by RISION for the Magic Pro AF02; no independent test of this specific camera is established here. RISION lists 12 palettes and a device weight of 24 g. Its stated accuracy should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every material or household condition: the company itself says readings depend on target and environment. The camera is most useful for comparing visible surface patterns and directing further inspection, not certifying a home’s energy performance or diagnosing a fault.
