The Potion of Freezing is documented in Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 3, published October 6, 2026. It applies the new Freezing effect: players shake, progressively freeze as they would in Powder Snow, and eventually take damage. In player-versus-player combat, splash, lingering and tipped-arrow forms offer ranged delivery, but the snapshot does not establish duration, radius, movement penalties or tournament-tested tactics. In mob farms, the effect is useful only against mobs vulnerable to Freezing; those mobs take five times the stated Freezing damage. The official notes do not identify every vulnerable mob or provide kill-time and drop-rate data, so treat farm applications as something to test rather than a guaranteed upgrade.

If your game does not contain Frostbites or the potion in its recipe book, changing equipment or farm design will not make the feature appear; you are probably on a build that does not include it.
What the Freezing effect actually does
Player symptoms and damage
The Java snapshot describes the effect plainly: The Freezing effect will cause players to shake and eventually deal damage
. Freezing progressively freezes the affected player as if they were standing in Powder Snow. That means the effect is a damage-over-time hazard with a visual and physical presentation, not an instant hit.

Leather Armor interacts with Freezing in the same way it interacts with Powder Snow. It protects against the freezing damage, but it does not stop the effect from being applied and does not remove an effect already active. Calling leather immunity would therefore be incorrect: a leather-wearing player can still be debuffed and can still show the freezing behavior.
Extra damage to affected mobs
The snapshot says that mobs take additional Freezing damage while affected. It also specifies a five-times damage multiplier for mobs vulnerable to Freezing. The qualifier matters. The notes do not publish a complete vulnerability list, and the multiplier is not a universal five-times bonus against every mob or every potion-related damage event.

Frostbites also throw Ice Balls. An Ice Ball hit deals 4 damage at full impact conditions, with damage reduced at lower velocity, and it causes knockback. That is projectile impact damage. It is not the damage value of the Potion of Freezing and should not be used as a farm calculation for the effect.
Find Frostbites and collect Ice Balls
Locate the source mob
Frostbites spawn in cold or icy biomes. The snapshot describes both melee and ranged behavior: a melee attack applies Freezing, while a ranged attack throws Ice Balls. Frostbites drop Ice Balls, giving you the material needed for potion brewing and a separate projectile option.

- Enter the exact Java snapshot or other build in which Frostbites are enabled.
- Search cold or icy biomes for Frostbites. If no Frostbites appear, confirm the biome and difficulty rules for your build before concluding that the feature is broken.
- Defeat Frostbites and collect their Ice Ball drops. Keep projectile drops separate from any Ice Balls you plan to test as weapons so that your damage observations are not confused with potion-effect damage.
The release notes establish the biome, attacks and drops, but do not provide a spawn-weight table, a guaranteed drop count or a farmable spawn-rate formula. Do not design a Frostbite collection farm around an assumed rate.
Make the potion and its delivery variants
What the official notes confirm
Ice Balls are used to brew the regular Potion of Freezing and its splash and lingering variants. The notes do not publish a slot-by-slot brewing-stand sequence, a duration, a damage interval or a statement that duration modifiers work identically in every edition. Your in-game recipe display and the behavior of your specific build are the authoritative checks for those details.

Arrows of Freezing
For a ranged tipped-arrow option, place one Lingering Potion of Freezing in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight arrows. This is the documented conversion:

A safe preparation sequence
- Confirm that the version is one in which the potion is present.
- Obtain Ice Balls from Frostbites.
- Use the brewing interface in that build to produce the base, splash or lingering form. Because the snapshot notes omit intermediate slots and timing, do not substitute a recipe copied from an unrelated version.
- If you need tipped ammunition, put the Lingering Potion of Freezing in the center of a crafting table and place eight arrows around it.
- Test one item in a controlled world before taking a large supply into a PvP match or rebuilding a farm.
Do not assume a Redstone recipe is universal. In Mojang bug report MCPE-243361, Redstone Dust did not start brewing when applied to a Potion of Freezing in Bedrock 26.60.29 Preview with the experimental Drop 4 of 2026 feature enabled. That is a report about that preview configuration, not a rule for every Bedrock version or for Java.

Using Freezing in PvP
What makes it a plausible combat debuff
Freezing has three properties that make it relevant to combat: it can continue affecting a player after the initial application, it eventually deals damage, and the potion system supplies ranged delivery through splash, lingering and tipped-arrow forms. The official feedback prompt specifically asks players how the effect feels in player-versus-player combat; it does not provide a tested combat playbook or measured performance data. See the discussion at Minecraft Feedback for the context of that question, but do not treat community comments there as official measurements.
Choose delivery by the situation
- Regular potion: reserve the base form for situations in which you can safely use the item on yourself or otherwise follow the consumption behavior exposed by your build. It is not the practical choice for tagging a distant opponent.
- Splash potion: throw it when an opponent is within the potion’s actual splash area. The effect can be applied without requiring a direct arrow hit, but the documented material does not establish the radius or how long the cloud-free application lasts.
- Lingering potion: use it as an area-denial experiment around a doorway, bridge or retreat route. Its value depends on the cloud’s real duration and radius, which you must measure in your build rather than assume.
- Arrow of Freezing: use the tipped arrow when line of sight and distance matter. It converts a successful hit into the effect, but no official source gives a damage-over-time total, hit duration or reliable movement penalty.
A practical, evidence-aware PvP plan
- Test the effect in the same edition and snapshot that will host the match. Record the visible onset, the time until damage and whether repeated applications refresh or replace the existing effect; none of those timings are published in the snapshot notes.
- Compare a splash throw, a lingering placement and an arrow hit at realistic distances. Record the actual area and whether terrain, shields or missed throws waste the item.
- Plan a follow-up attack rather than expecting Freezing to immobilize a target. The documented mechanics establish shaking and eventual damage, not a guaranteed stop, slow value or lockout.
- Carry a conventional damage option for the interval before Freezing deals damage. A freezing application is a pressure tool, not a confirmed instant-finisher.
- Expect leather-equipped opponents to reduce or prevent the freezing damage while still showing the applied effect. Change your plan when you see leather rather than wasting repeated applications on an unverified damage assumption.
These steps are tactical inferences from the documented mechanics, not results from a tournament test. The official material does not establish a best potion, a winning combo or a universal counterplay rule beyond leather’s stated protection.

When it can matter
A Potion of Freezing can matter in a farm only if the target mob is vulnerable to Freezing. For that category, the snapshot says affected mobs take five times the Freezing damage. Because the notes do not identify the complete vulnerable-mob list or the base damage and interval, you cannot calculate a reliable kill time from the multiplier alone.
What the mechanic does not prove
- It does not prove that every hostile or passive mob takes the five-times multiplier.
- It does not prove that a generic mob farm will produce more drops.
- It does not provide spawn-rate, potion-consumption, effect-duration or collection-efficiency figures.
- It does not establish that a potion-based kill is cheaper, faster or easier to maintain than your existing farm method.
A controlled farm test
- Duplicate the farm in a test world running the exact build you intend to use.
- Choose one target species and test it alone. Do not extrapolate from one mob to an entire category.
- Apply the effect with the delivery form you plan to automate, then record whether the mob receives Freezing, how long it survives and whether the effect can be reapplied.
- Run a comparison without the potion using the same spawn chamber, collection system and observation period.
- Measure completed kills and collected drops over several identical runs. Keep the potion supply, missed applications and non-target entities separate from the result.
- Use the potion in the production farm only if the target consistently proves vulnerable and the measured maintenance cost is acceptable.
For an automated design, treat Freezing as an additional damage mechanism that must be validated for the particular mob. A farm that depends on the undocumented assumption that all mobs receive five times damage can fail silently: entities may survive, wander out of the collection area or consume resources without increasing output.

Do not substitute Ice Ball damage for potion damage
An Ice Ball’s documented 4-damage impact, reduced at lower velocity and accompanied by knockback, is relevant if you are testing Frostbite projectiles. It cannot be plugged into a Potion of Freezing kill calculation. A farm using Ice Balls as projectiles and a farm using the Freezing effect are two different experiments with different failure modes.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No Frostbites appear
First verify the build and biome. Frostbites are documented for cold or icy biomes, and the feature is tied to the Java snapshot description. If the correct biome still produces no Frostbites, check that you are not in a release without the feature or using a world where the required experiment is disabled.
The potion is missing from the brewing interface
Confirm that you collected Ice Balls rather than assuming a similarly named item is interchangeable. Then check the exact edition and version. The release notes confirm Ice Balls as the ingredient family but do not give a universal intermediate recipe, so an absent result may reflect a recipe change rather than a failed brewing stand.
Redstone does nothing
If you are on Bedrock 26.60.29 Preview with Drop 4 of 2026 enabled, the behavior matches the issue documented in MCPE-243361. Do not generalize that preview bug to Java, and do not treat a later fix or a different preview as guaranteed until your build demonstrates it.
A mob survives the effect
Survival does not disprove the potion. The five-times multiplier is limited to mobs vulnerable to Freezing, and the official notes do not publish the full vulnerability list or damage schedule. Test the target species directly before changing the farm.

Leather seems to defeat your PvP plan
That outcome is consistent with the documented armor interaction: leather protects against freezing damage but does not prevent application or remove the effect. Use the visible debuff only as information; do not count on damage unless your build’s test confirms it.
Version-aware checklist
- Write down the edition, version number and enabled experimental toggles before testing.
- Confirm Frostbites spawn in the biome you are using and that they drop Ice Balls.
- Separate Ice Ball projectile tests from Potion of Freezing effect tests.
- Verify the brewing and arrow-crafting behavior in the same build as your world.
- Measure PvP timing, area and counterplay locally instead of inventing values for duration, radius or movement reduction.
- Test one mob species at a time before incorporating Freezing into a farm.
- Recheck behavior after moving from a snapshot or preview to a stable release.
Bottom line
In the documented Java 26.4 Snapshot 3, Freezing is best understood as a ranged-capable debuff whose damage and player pressure still need measurement. Use splash, lingering or tipped-arrow forms to test PvP applications, remember that leather protects against freezing damage, and keep Ice Ball’s 4-damage projectile separate from potion damage. For farms, the only firm optimization rule is conditional: vulnerable mobs receive the stated five-times Freezing damage. Until Mojang publishes a vulnerability list, timings and final release behavior, validate every target and recipe in the exact edition and build you plan to play.
