Find your friends list in the PlayStation App
- Open the PlayStation App and sign in to the PlayStation account you want to use.
- Tap Friends at the top right of the screen to open your friends list. Sony documents this route in its instructions for adding and removing PlayStation friends.
- Look for the status icon beside a friend’s name. To check the status on their profile instead, select the friend and look for the icon there. Sony says both locations show a player’s online status in its online-status guide.
What the status labels mean
| Status | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Online | The account appears online when its user is signed in, unless they change their status. |
| Busy | The user is signaling that they are occupied, such as focusing on a game or stepping away. |
| Appear Offline | The user is hiding their online visibility from friends and other players. |
These are displayed availability states, not a promise that someone is at their console or ready to respond. Sony notes that a player may appear online while within a game, and that signing in on a PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, or PlayStation TV also makes the user appear online. A status change on one supported PS5 or PS4 login can affect the status shown across those devices.

What Appear Offline and Busy do not do
Neither setting blocks every interaction. Sony says other players may still invite someone to voice chat or online games while that person is marked Busy or Appear Offline. Treat the icon as a visibility signal, not as proof that invitations or game interactions are disabled.

Change your own status in the app
If you want to change what other players see for your account, open Profile on the app’s play screen, then select Online Status. This changes your displayed status; it is separate from checking a friend’s status. See Sony’s online-status instructions for the documented app route.
